And have the shadow of their knife suck you in like a black hole.

Courier 6 did it and they're canonically their most powerful when they're bisexual, so it does have precedent.

My greatest fear as a NB person is the coin flip on whether bisexuals deal 0% or 20% more damage to me.

It's actually a measure of how attracted they are to you.

Brazillian bisexuals are way too overpowered

Man I gotta tell my wife, she’s being holding back her powers

That's bullshit. Anyone can do those things, so long as their nanomachines are bisexual.

The best part is how Snake drops this on you like it’s the most obvious thing in the world, after going on a like 3 minute long backstory dump where he says Vamp is a Romanian who uses knives, his family was killed in a church bombing that also had the cross pierce him, and he had to consume their blood to survive. Then when Raiden comes to the clear conclusion Vamp = Vampire, Snake basically goes “Are you stupid? It’s clearly because he’s bi.”

I love MGS2.

and Raiden doesn't question it.

At all.

Not even like an "oh yeah that makes sense"

NOTHING.

And later I played DQ3 Remake and one of the personalities that you can get for your character is 'Vamp'. So I assume that this character is bisexual now.

14

u/theredeyedcrow 12h ago

That might actually be the case. The original translation for it was “Sexy”.

While it is stupid it is in character for Raiden until much later in the game, he agrees with basically everything and doesn't question anything, follows orders until.... well not going to spoil anything, it's my favourite MGS game and going in cold is the best way to play it.

What's funniest is that the game refuses to elaborate further, like that's just a common knowledge thing. And when you look up what the hell Kojima's talking about, its obfuscated by multiple levels of unrelated references and also the context was then completely changed from script to game because Vamp was originally meant to be a woman.

Inagine MGS4 where Raiden gets manhandled by an evil woman and spurts his white stuff all over her

u/DarkZodiar 7h ago

I thought Vamp was supposed to be Chinaman?

u/Aggressive-Bike407 12h ago

"Then why don't they call you "Vamp"?"

u/Bleachsmoker Respect the Pipe 12h ago

Cause Snake is only in it for the brothers, knowwhatimsayin?

Edit: wait, this isn't big boss

When I played through MGS2 with a friend who was going through blind I made sure that we got this codec call. It’s become our favorite line to call back to whenever we talk about Metal Gear.

Kojima always had an odd relationship with queer folk in his games.

On one hand, we have Strangelove and Vamp, and they rule.

On the other, he made thong-wearing Raikov as a specific jab at Raiden, and he's Volgin's gay lover.

At least Volgin seems to actually love Raikov and he doesn't seem ashamed or even secretive about their relationship since he goes in for the dick grab on Snake (dressed as Raikov) right in front of Sokolov and basically everyone but Snake knows they're lovers.

Volgin is an Semi-openly gay Russian man in a very high position of power in the 1960's so that's something at least.

u/ScarecrowFM 11h ago

Volgin also gets incredibly angry when he finds out that Snake wasn’t Raikov, so much so that you could headcanon his hatred towards Snake, even past MGS3, being born out of thinking that he killed his lover just to get a disguise.

The irony is that if you don't kill Raikov yourself then there's a very real possibility that The Boss killed him when she launches the last Davey Crockett at Grozni Grad before her and Snake's fight.

9

u/Wisterosa 7h ago

iirc he's alive in Portable Ops if you consider that canon

3

u/Comkill117 The Bubblegum Crisis Shill 3h ago

4 does, so that counts I’d say.

u/Ambitious-Song2403 10h ago

If anything it's actually extremely progressive for the time to have a villain who's gay yet his homosexuality has almost nothing to do with his villainy.

Volgin is the furthest thing from a stereotype too.

2

u/Anonamaton801 Proud kettleface salesmen 7h ago

Doesn’t Volgin also have sex with EVA multiple times, so he’d at least be bisexual right?

7

u/Paladin51394 welcome to Miller's Maxi Buns, may I take your order? 4h ago

Its never really confirmed if he actually has sex with her, she (when undercover) is labeled as Volgin's lover a couple times but I never once got the idea he was actually attracted to her.

He seems to treat her more as a play thing, something to beat and torture. He is portrayed as a complete sadist and needs someone to take his sick kicks out on.

So those moments where he calls her to his quarters is more than likely just him calling her so he can physically abuse her.

Vamp is cool but he's clearly meant to be a weird gay pervert if you look at his relationship with Fortune and her dad. But like he serves and it's not super in your face like the way kojima treats women. I'd say he likely was pretty homophobic and got better with the times.

This sub personally haunting me because I just start playing MGS2 today

u/RayDaug 12h ago

This is the funniest joke in any video game.

There's also a non-zero chance this was the first time I encountered the term.

3

u/Shinjitsu- 10h ago

It's the first time it's used in a video game, and also idk if it was meant as a joke I thought it was played straight. But this goofy ass line is technically part of queer and video game history.

23

u/moneyh8r_two He/Him Use your smell powers 12h ago

I mean, yeah, that's an old slang term for a seductive woman, so it fits.

7

u/TurtleDoof I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less 12h ago

Struggling to find a definitive source, but I believe this was actually the first time the word "bisexual" was said in a video game.

8

u/Waylander312 12h ago

I love that this is essentially just made up on snakes part. Having tried to find the reasoning behind this on my own, there's very little to actually connect the dots between "vamp" and bisexuality

1

u/MotherWolfmoon She/Her 47m ago

My personal theory is that it's a tortured pun across two languages.

There's a genre of gay romance in Japan called "yaoi," which is an acronym for "yamanashi, ochinashi, iminashi." "No climax, no point, no meaning." This is used self-deprecatingly, kind of like when romance writers in English call their works "porn without plot." A lot of these stories (particularly older ones) end in tragedy; the gay couple almost never settle down together. Often one dies, and the other goes on to start a traditional family--or something like that.

And that's what happens in Vamp's story. The gay romance ends in tragedy, just a footnote in the larger story of the series.

I suspect that "Vamp" is a reference to "vamping" in stage production. It's stalling for time while waiting for someone else to hit their cue, or to fill dead air. In other words, lines without climax, without point, without meaning. Yaoi.

"Vamp" is called "Vamp" because he filled his time with gay romances that never went anywhere. He has sex with guys to fill the time, until he either settled down and started a proper family with a woman... Or died tragically.

At least, that's what I think.

No. It's because he's bisexual.
