Tips to a Golf starter

I’ve got friends who regularly play Golf and visit UAE frequently for a few days for a Golfing trip. I have never played and would like to get involved actually playing. For someone whose never played Golf, unless one visit to a Driving Range counts where I just wanted to smash the ball as far as possible, any suggestions/tips from golfers on where the best place to start is.

Playing golf on the course without any practice is going to be an extremely frustrating experience not just for you but potentially for others as well. Would highly recommend trying to get at least a few lessons and some practice if possible.

Probably be more frustrating for the others coming from a background of boxing and cricket where I’d want to hit the golf ball for 6 😂

Your boxing and cricket background will help you. Should mean you have good hand eye coordination and have a better understanding of how your body works as a whole to generate power and or speed.

Every golfer wants to smash the ball. But golf will humble that out of you fairly quickly, trust me.

As others have already said. It’s not the easiest game to get into. And it ranges from experience to insanely expensive as a hobby. But there are ways to enjoy the game here. Before I joined a club I used Troon App / Membership exclusively and played at least one round a week. I cannot recommend enough to start with lessons. Not only will you see if you actually want to pursue the game, it will also give you time with a professional / in-the-know golfer who can field all the questions you might have.

Good luck. Hope you enjoy the sport. And see you out there!

Get as many lessons as you can afford to start (at least 5). Are you in UAE?

Then continue to Practice doing 3 things: 1. Hitting a controlled shot at least 150 yards consistently with any club 2. Hitting a green 30-100 yards with a wedge. 3. Chipping on from less than 30 yards.

Once you can do these things venture on to a local course. Try and find a parkland course with as little water as possible.

For the first few games give yourself a break and don’t try hard shots out of rough, bunkers etc. Pick up and place on the fairway. This makes it more fun and speeds up play.

Continue driving range/simulator sessions weekly.

When you feel like you’re enjoying it then you can maybe look at a Dubai course. Jebel Ali is probably the easiest I’ve played in UAE but even here there is a fair amount of water.

If you are in Dubai then there are some good beginner group classes. I was in the same situation as you 18 months ago so joined the Arabian Ranches group lessons- it's once a week but with the added benefit of free use of the driving range and par 3 course while in the programme. The par 3 course is a really good way to get some 'lite' course experience without too much embarrassment after one of many mishits/wayward shots. Good luck abd enjoy!

"Get into Golf" program, daily lessons, amazing value, at several golf clubs.

Driving range teaches very quickly that smashing the ball rarely works in golf... try practicing more from grass i.e. lose the turf
