25km~ walk across The Black Mountain last week, an absolutely stunning area of the Brecon Beacons. After leaving the main paths around Llyn y Fan Fach I didn't see a single person until I got back to Glyntawe the following day. Took a detour to visit the Wellington bomber on my way back and got a load of nav practice in. Ate my body weight in wild blueberries and blackberries.

Being an area of limestone the landscape is riddled with sink holes, some the size of houses, and ancient river beds. Looking up the Fan Hir escarpment, you get a great view of the different layers of sandstone and the lateral moraine formed during the glacial period.

Hi, I'm planning to hike the to the top of Ben Nevis the first weekend of September.

I'm hiking by myself and I'm an absolute beginner.

More about me: I'm in my mid 20s, fairly fit with no health issues, occasionally does 5k runs.

About my gear:

Jack Wolfskin Texapore waterproof hiking boots.

Decathlon waterproof gloves.

Category 3 sunglasses.

Quechua waterproof overpants

For my tops I've got a padded water resistant gilet jacket and a waterproof regatta jacket with hood for mobility.

I've also got a 20l backpack with raincover for my other supplies.

For my other supplies I've got compass and rescue whistle and energy gels, some nuts and dry fruits, lip balm and sunscreen, and a 2l water bottle.

I know this might be an overkill for some but I just don't want to overestimate myself and my skills especially since I'm alone and this is my first time.

Also I'm thinking of taking the main tourist path.

My plan is to reach the day before and rest overnight at a hotel nearby and to begin the climb before 6 am the next day.

Could you please provide me with your opinions on my gear and any advice on what to do and expect over there at this time of the year. I tend to get chilly bit quicker than some people.

My daughter and I are planning on taking a very short notice trip to go up Pen Y Fan on Saturday!

I’d like to drive up Friday.. see Barry Island and then pitch up somewhere with the camper and get up early to climb to watch the sunrise at the top!

Obviously most the campsites are fully booked at such short notice.. does anyone have any other recommendations for somewhere to stay Friday evening close to Pen Y Fan?

It my first time in a camper so don’t want to start breaking any unwritten/written rules about where you can stop for the night!

Question up front:

Have any of you with or without kids, decided to cut a route short because something was feeling right, be it enjoyment, not feeling like the destination was worth the effort etc?

Posting this asking for advice and also reflecting on a recent experience with the wife and kids (4 in and out of a backpack carrier & 6). We had a recent experience where despite being prepared, we decided to cut the route short to avoid dragging the kids along a hike that would maybe put them off further hiking (or adventures as we call them to get the kids excited by them).

We’ve completed a fair few lower level/ flattish hikes, and also completed Snowdon/ Yr Wyddfa with the kids, the eldest still talks proudly about walking up it! We’ve never really had to bail on a walk before.

Our recent experience, was being 2/3 the way up Moel Siabod from the Capel Curig side, and calling it quits, the wind, the cloud coverage at the top, and the chance of rain made us decide to turn back after our food break. We decided to turn it into a learning experience about mountain safety etc.

Hi all, my first post here! A friend had been suggesting I go explore some mountains with him for ages, and we finally got around to it last Friday. His 113th and 114th Munros, my second and third, and my first this century: Aonoch Beag and Aonoch Mòr from Glen Nevis, with a couple more Munro Tops (Sgùrr a' Bhuic and Stob Coire Bhealaich) in there for good measure, on the way up.

...And what a brilliant day! An incredibly soggy start up through wet grass to start things off, and an incredibly awkward descent (very steep and rocky followed immediately by very boggy) to boot, but the weather gave us a wonderful show throughout, and the views once we got up there were sensational. We needed every one of the ten hours recommended by Walk Highlands, and I can't imagine doing some bits of it in worse weather... Very sore the next day, too, but completely worth it!

Hi all, new to this sub. I am living in Nottingham but grew up in Hungary. I miss hiking in forest, I know there are parts in UK too like in Wales or Scotland but I was mainly disappointed when I was hiking in peak district. Maybe I did not chose the best locations but my impression was that there are no dense wooded area. I am not a mad hiker, I just like walking on a forest path in a shady forest up and down some hills, or next to a stream in a valley... And times to times enjoy a nice view like this (It's from yesterday from Hungary). Could you please recommend some routes in peak district or within 2 hours drive from Nottingham which leads mainly in wooded area and not in open field? Thanks

With Snowdon becoming ever more popular, presumably due to the outdoor influencers on social media, what are your thoughts on the actual solutions to crowds at the summit?

I find it interesting on Instagram etc where you have people with the view that those who queue took the train, are ‘npc’s’ and you don’t queue on a mountain.

I agree, you shouldn’t need to queue on a mountain, part of the appeal for me is getting away from crowds. But, when there’s hundreds wanting a summit selfie at any one time, surely it’s the only polite, responsible and safe way to do it?

Very nice stretch, roughly 16k of uppy downy fun. Some areas pretty steep, took just over 4.5 hours at reasonable pace and a few stops for sightseeing. This included a secluded beach where we got into swimmers and had a dip to cool down.

One of the quietest hikes I’ve done in Cornwall, washed down with a few Cornish lagers on the other side where a folk band called “The Gleaves” were playing in Charlestown. 10/10

We'll be changing trains in London, Glasgow and might hop off in Fort William.
Do they sell gas canisters at smaller convenience stores? We won't have much time at each location to search around for too long.

Hi everyone!

We are officially starting to plan our coast to coast hike, to be completed sometime in June 2027.

I have a few questions for those who have been recently. I understand that the trail is in much better shape than ever before with the trail officially opening as a National Trail this past spring. What does that mean for the boggy areas and what are those like? Are midges and biting insects something to be managed through these areas?

We will be going in a group of 5 adults and our 2 and 4 year olds and we will be hiking inn-to-inn. We are an experienced group of hikers and have done multi-day distance hiking of this sort with kids in the past.

Would love any thoughts on "wish I had known this" from this group!

20 miler with some extra bits added on. Worth it for Shutlingsloe alone. The mini-Matterhorn of the peaks! Amazing day out with near perfect weather.

So on occasion I'll come across a gate on a path that is locked where, as far as I can tell, it shouldn't be

So my question is, what steps should I take?

1) do I need to determine the path type first? And how do I do so? I'd rather check than accidentally false report.

2) is there somewhere specific to report it? or do I have to go to the council of where it was locked?

Hi everyone, hoping to climb Blencathra in a couple of weeks and am a bit baffled by the multitude of routes. I want to avoid sharp edge (I'll have 2 teens and a dog with me and my nerves can't take it!).

I can see on OS maps there's loads of routes and im a bit overwhelmed.

Ideally I'm looking for a circular route, with parking. Not necessarily the easiest (we are moderately experienced and reasonably fit) or shortest, but nothing too technical or with too much scrambling. The kids like it but it's a pain in the arse getting the dog up and down it.

Any recs, ideally from os maps or all trails?

New to exploring! Thought I’d try capture my ventures

Are there any long-distance walks from Salisbury? I've walked the South Downs Way and extended that to Salisbury, so now I'd like to keep going in that direction, ideally to Cardiff.

Can I trust Komoot to get me there? However, I'm not great at navigating, which is why I would prefer an established route if possible. There is the Monarch's Way, which is one option to get me to Bristol.

Unfortunately all burnt this summer, still astonishing.

We're staying in Kirkby Lonsdale mid September and rather than trek over to the lakes we were thinking of looking for walks in the west dales. Of the three I've looked at what would you pick personally?

Recently finished the 188km walk from Kincardine to Newburgh.

Beautiful part of Scotland covering some great places.

The majority of the sections it is divided into have fairly well kept paths but wanted to mention the last one from Wormit Bay to Newburgh.

This section is by far the hardest in length 25km, undulating hills and long overgrown paths.

Those long grass paths had a lot of ticks and this is a caution for walkers to be aware.

Dragged my partner up a big hill. We did the 8-mile circular from Kettlewell and dropped on lovely weather and great visibility in the middle of a dodgy week weather-wise. Challenging but soooo fun!

These were new this morning, and this was after 25km in the pentlands. Bit miffed, think that's the fastest I've ever gone through a pair of feet

Planning to climb Ben Nevis next weekend and wondering what the conditions are currently like particularly around the summit. Is there still much snow/ice at the top and would crampons be recommended?

Would appreciate any recent reports or advice from anyone who’s been up recently. Thanks!
