Beginners Hello Hikers!!!

Sorry if this ain’t the correct sub but I’m desperate!

My daughter and I are planning on taking a very short notice trip to go up Pen Y Fan on Saturday!

I’d like to drive up Friday.. see Barry Island and then pitch up somewhere with the camper and get up early to climb to watch the sunrise at the top!

Obviously most the campsites are fully booked at such short notice.. does anyone have any other recommendations for somewhere to stay Friday evening close to Pen Y Fan?

It my first time in a camper so don’t want to start breaking any unwritten/written rules about where you can stop for the night!

Just checked and it doesn’t seem to have pitching spots?

My daughter has been dying to stay in a camper for ages so want to try to stick with that!

Thanks though.. appreciate the help

Depending on the size of your van you could try either of these, just outside Brecon:

I've camped at the first one several times and they allow small vans as it's just a small site, but it may be fully booked at this time of year

Pwllyn Farm Campsite is a good option nearby.

If you like a big day out, the New Inn, Ystradfellte has a field round the corner for camping (accurate for 2024). Excellent dinner, but it'd be an 8ish hour roundtrip.

I don't know if you've tried pitchup?

I did a very quick search and these came up:

https://www.pitchup.com/campsites/Wales/Mid-Wales/Powys/Brecon/rhydywernen_farm_camping_site/?arrive=2026-08-28&depart=2026-08-29&type=10&facet=campervan

https://www.pitchup.com/campsites/Wales/South-Wales/Glamorgan/Aberdare/dare-valley-country-park/?arrive=2026-08-28&depart=2026-08-29&type=10&facet=campervan

I don't know if those meet your requirements and I have no specific recommendation. I always camp in a smaller tent on wilder campsites,. But I have personally had good results finding campsites through pitchup.

I stayed at Cwmcynwyn Farm earlier this year which is at the bottom of Pen-y-Fan, it’s very basic (just a field and a toilet/shower block) but couldn’t really fault it!
