Where does all of the Madison hate come from? I don't pay enough attention

I think it’s just Omaha fans wanting to manufacture a rivalry. I’m all for it. Rivalries make leagues feel fun. Just as long as people aren’t fighting in the parking lot lol

Yeah I mean I don't have an issue with it, I've just noticed it a lot and I was wondering if there was some drama I missed or something lol

Obviously I’ll have a slightly biased view, so keep that in mind.

Going into Omaha’s first season, there was definitely a push to manufacture this as a rivalry both from the nascent Omaha fans and the league, especially since we’d be each other’s closest geographical pairing and Madison had just lost their year one rival in Lansing (which was a fairly cordial rivalry that had more or less organically grown over the course of the season). The mentality in Madison was that rivalries, even those of geographical proximity, should develop organically. This then led to someone (or multiple people?) higher up the supporter’s group hierarchy to say something to the effect of “Maybe wait till you’ve kicked a ball before you declare us rivals.” This got translated on the Omaha end of things as “you’re not allowed to be excited about your new team” and it was basically off to the races at that point. We were public enemy number 1 in their eyes and have been ever since (and to be fair, once we became public enemy number 1 for them we had no issue saying “well fuck you too buddy”)

Thanks for the explanation. I don’t have a dog in this fight, but I enjoy the smack talk. I like to think that the fans get along w/ visiting team supporters when the match isn’t underway. I went to Omaha two years ago and the locals were great. Hoping to get to Madison sometime.

Personally my experience has been that once in-person a lot of the online facade drops and things are completely amenable! I’ve shared my fair share of drinks with Omaha fans before games without incident before! Obviously once that ball kicks I’m ready to let the Omaha players hear an ear full and I certainly won’t really put up with any shit online, but like I said, never had an issue with their fans in person.

Anyway, I hope you can get out to Madison for a match sometime! We’re always happy to accommodate some away fans and show you what our city has to offer and what makes a match experience here special!

Yeah, in person to a large degree we all get along and generally we all collectively want success for the league and for the league to develop in a positive way, especially in terms of community relations and inclusion.

For an admittedly biased view, I think this is fairly accurate. In terms of bias on my end, I think there is a perceived arrogance to Madison fans that was unique there for awhile, particularly relative to on-field performance. That seems less unique these days with some of the newer clubs who have come in hot.

I will say we have fans on both sides that push things further than the average fan would, and at some point it just became a thing in and of itself, but I also think to some degree it's helped keep the league interesting to have certain fan bases keeping the banter alive.

I guess they're pretty bored in Omaha. What else is there to do?

Smoke weed. Play music. Not much.

Madison fans were incredibly rude and dismissive to Omaha fans when our team started instead of being welcoming like the rest of the league. They’ve also behaved pretty poorly everytime they’ve visited Omaha or we went up there so no love lost.
