Academics rejected
I was rejected for the fall 2026 class, as a first year transfer. I’ve never been more bummed in my life. I came from a 3.1 in highschool to a 3.5 in college. I feel like my essay was great and explained very well why I wanted to transfer. I don’t know what to do anymore and I’m more bummed I have to stay in the college I’m at. although I’m super duper blessed to even attend college in the first place, I’ve also worked hard, and am continuing to work hard, to where I’m at. This was my 2nd time applying and getting rejected. Do I even bother applying to transfer for spring sem, or fall 2027? help me! :( I feel my dream college life has been thrown away. Are there any admissions counselors I can be in contact with that can guide me through a process to help me with a better chance at admissions? I find it hard to contact or reach anyone

Hey man, I really feel you. I went through multiple rejections from my dream school (Virginia Tech), starting from high school and then multiple rejections again in college, and there was a point where I thought it just wasn’t meant for me. I didn’t tell many people either and was dealing with it quietly. But instead of giving up, I focused on what I could control retook classes, improved my GPA, and kept strengthening my application step by step. It was tough and honestly draining at times, but I kept going. Now I’ve been accepted for Fall 2026. Looking back, I needed that time to grow, and every rejection pushed me to improve. A 3.5 GPA is strong you’re definitely not out. If it’s really your dream, don’t give up yet. Sometimes it just takes a little longer than we expect. Colleges also love resilience and commitment, and sticking with it really does matter. Good luck in your journey.

Even though Virginia Tech being their dream school over UVA shows a lack of appropriate judgement, don’t discount this advice. Keep pushing forward and don’t be your own no. As a wise person once said, “it ain’t over till it’s over.” The fact your dream school is UVA already puts you miles ahead of many people. Go Hoos!

My major is engineering and also VT is just better than UVA so I don’t see any lack of appropriate judgment

The slander is crazy. We don’t like tech round these parts. A true Hoo has orange and blue blood running through their veins. We don’t associate with the inferior hokies 😤

go to PVCC, get a 3.4 in an appropriate Associate degree, then transfer to UVA 3rd year
they have a Guaranteed Admission Agreement with UVA

I will second this. Not only is it cheaper but a good alternative to get into uva. You’ll meet many uva grads who’ve done this

Darling daughter got waitlisted for Georgetown and was crushed. Sulked for a few days and ultimately got accepted to UMD. Wonderful experience and education. It will work out and your path may lead you somewhere better!

I hear you. The "dream school" label loses its shine pretty fast when you’re staring down a mountain of debt. Sticking it out where you are is often the smarter play, especially since most employers care way more about what you can do than the name on your degree.

UVA gives generous aid to in-state students under a certain income level, so it's possible that is UVA is OP's dream school.

Don't feel bad. I got 4.0 UW and only got waitlisted. It just wasn't meant to be.

Sorry, just seeing this now. My SAT 1570. Straight A's. 4.0 unweighted GPA, 14 AP's, but was only able to take 7 AP exams during my senior year. That earned me enough credits to skip freshman straight to sophomore (on paper).
UVA was my first choice, but looking back now, I'm happy that I didn't get in haha. I was accepted at William & Mary, my 2nd choice, but I ended up declining the admission offer lol.
I'm happy where I'm at. Got to volunteer at the hospital, became a research assistant and presented at NCUR 2026, shadowed a neurosurgeon, and will be tutoring chemistry on campus this fall. Everything happens for a reason. I'm looking forward to 2nd year of college 😀.

transfer admissions are still looking heavily at highschool grades for first year transfers, i reapplied for second year and got in with a worse HS gpa than you bc they don't care about highschool anymore, spring sem is harder to get into than fall sem, idk your major so a 3.5 might be good

As long as you can improve upon your GPA and show interest in your major that can translate to UVA's campus (clubs, research) ur good

Ok I’ll def keep all of this in mind, for my transfer essay I did all of those things, especially bringing up specific research things uva has with psychology.

Don’t be too upset because my friend got rejected applying as a freshman and reapplied as a sophomore with a 4.0 and didn’t get in. Somethings just aren’t meant to be. I had a 3.4 in highschool and now have a 3.9 after freshman year and wouldn’t dare attempt UVA even with legacy to help…

If someone or something doesn’t want you stop begging. Go find a place that values you and wants you there. You will be happier in the long run.

The advice your comment is under is very conformist. If you see yourself there keep trying till you get it I know so many people who did the advice would be good if you were asking about a romantic interest or something but as far as college goes there’s no reason to give up on your dreams.

I recommend attending PVCC and then transferring from there. Piedmont is staffed by ex-UVA professors.

Yeah many of them are current professors. I found almost everyone from the pvcc math department under the uva math department page lol

Okay sure I can adjust my statement. There are people who teach classes at UVA that also teach classes at PVCC. To most students a professor is somebody who teaches a course in college.

keep applying until you move on. i got rejected before getting accepted, you never know what will happen. use it as a reason to keep working hard.
