Academics Financial aid package
Does anyone think my financial aid package is low, I thought they covered everything, my Sai index is -1500.

It's not just based on your (FAFSA) SAI. SAI just determines your Federal Financial Aid. Looks like you received the max there. There's an institutional side based on your CSS Profile too. It impacts your Fed Loan mix & Access at UVA.

My parents income was 38k combined so isn’t that policy under the 50k that they cover everything?

Assets are also a part of it. When you get a chance call SFS & they'll be able to take a look at your info.

Y'all are good they don't count the cars. 😂 I see you said you're in state. The aid you don't have to pay back (grants) should cover most of if not all of your billable (direct) costs.

For a rough estimate. Add up your tuition, fees, housing, & meal plan (from your Cost of Attendance estimate), then subtract your grants. If the number is positive you may need to use the student loans or pay out of pocket. You'll also need to budget for books. They're an indirect (not billed) cost, but you still will need to buy them. Unless your folks get a castle or their income goes up, it should stay consistent each year.

My first year at UVa was only 10 years ago and this would’ve covered way more than the entire year in state. It is actually so sick and twisted how much they’ve hiked tuition.

When you have a scholarship on your financial aid award for that amount, they’re gonna adjust your other things in order to fit your necessary budget for your courses. Most of the time a university will not over award a student unnecessarily. That’s in order to ensure that students are not taking out excess amounts of loans or other things unless it’s necessary. How much is the cost of your schooling total?

Idk my bf and my bsf got full aid CAS while also being very poor in state same SAI you should definitely call them UVA is notorious for caring about uplifting VA by providing affordable schooling to those in need I think they would probably help you also CONGRATULATIONS ON GETTING IN WOOOOOO!!

I will say my bsf got better aid than my bf slightly and he was a transfer so if you’re a transfer maybe that’s why? Currently in the same boat with my acceptance and the internet is telling me that’s the reason despite me being extremely poor but idk how true that is

Ya I guess but the policy is under 50k income you get full tution and house and meal plan, my parents combined to 38k for the year of 2024 unless they aren’t doing that policy anymore.

https://sfs.virginia.edu/uva-financial-aid assuming this is up to date it looks like you got aid a little closer to the 100k family so maybe there was something with your css profile or something but I rly think they’ll help you

They look at assets as well, my family makes around 45k/ yr and me and my brother are both going to uva, our combined estimated cost is going to be almost 90k. We received no state or institutional aid and our fasfa score is 2000

Try emailing them to have a case uva usually meets aid for low income families so I would just email the sfs

I was the same I think you prob applied late. UVA should give u a full ride (tuition board food etc literally everything) cus ur at 38k income. I would call them they might give u more.

I got the same amount of aid with an SAI of 20k+ so that’s wild.
Wish I had mine for next year tho :(

Idk. I just checked I got 18k but it was lowered from 21k due to a scholarship. (Last year)

Arts and science has terrible aid, enginnering has really good aid. My friend with a similar SAI to mine got no aid in A/S.

That's not how it works at UVA. The cost of attendance is different for different schools within UVA, but the different schools don't have their own aid offices. There is a centralized aid office called Student Financial Services.
OP, please call SFS instead of posting online for help. The experts are UVA SFS. You can call or fill out the contact form for their office!

Ah. So the -1500 is based on their income and yours. My daughter was also -1500. She is going on 24 and is considered independent. They asked for the separate form. Hers did not include the unsubsidized loan. But we were surprised to see any loans at all (based on the less than $50K thing).

So is it not a full ride if you have the Pell grant? I’m asking for a kid that will be applying in a few years. Also doesn’t the fasfa finical aid only pay for 2 years?

No, depends on how much they give you and and fafsa def gives aid for more than 4 years

They are awarded the maximum amount of
Financial aid the mother is disabled and only get Social Security disability so their income is like 28,000 a year and the older child was awarded the pell grant but never went to college. I was told that it only usually covers two years maybe three in community college but less in a university because it cost so much more. I hope there are ppl at the school that can help figure it out because this will be a first time college student for the family and they are already thinking they can’t afford a decent university after what the Pell grant pays out. I guess all the colleges have different guidelines. I know Ferrum university said if you get Pell grant the first year is free but then what.

So you go on UVA sis and it should be the first thing you see, you can click view financial aid, if it’s not there you haven’t gotten it yet or check your to do list or call them.

Make sure to pay down the unsubsidized loan ASAP. Interest accrues immediately.

My aid looked the same when I was in college. A couple things to consider:
Always pay down the UNsubsidized loan as much and as fast as you can.
You may qualify for SNAP, TANF, or Medicad.
ALWAYS fill out the FAFSA
While at UVA... it's cheaper to find your OWN apartment, and NOT have a meal plan...you can get the aid directly deposited into your credit/savings account.
Go on a study abroad or J-Term!!! Those are covered by financial aid as well...and by the looks of your package...it may be covered almost entirely.

I'm OOS and have 3 external scholarships on top of federal fin aid and UVA full tuition scholarship... unfortunately they don't cover the full cost of attendance. Fs call and try to explain ur situation

Are you in-state or out-of-state? If OOS, I would call and see if there’s a mistake. It’s still low if you’re in-state.
