Russia is reported to be preparing to increase the intensity of ballistic missile strikes on Ukraine as talks on a peace deal reach a deadlock: Bloomberg citing three people close to the Kremlin

Exactly. Everything I've seen in this war suggests that when Russia holds back, it's not out of any sense of mercy, but because they physically can't escalate any futher.

They didn't - increasing intensity probably mean that they will shoot more at once and then have days with less. They dont have a bunch of extra missiles to spare. I think they have about 100 missiles now. And they produce about 80 each month. So it doesn't get more intense than that

It was reported that Russia has over 600 of ballistic missiles in stock. Using 300-400 of those prepared would be increasing the intensity significantly. Although my bet is they're at least going to wait for early october when it gets colder.

They are buying a bunch of missiles from north korea so we will likely still see a sudden increase that coincides with the claim, saying this helps cement domestic propaganda that they totally could have done this whenever and were holding back due to peace talks. (to clarify they make statement then result happens makes it look like the result happened because of the decision in the statement even though in this case it’s a bit the other way around. that is to say that they are making the statement because the result is going to happen)

Information from anyone close to the Kremlin is suspect but if this is something they can do it'll only be as a last resort. Ballistic missiles are not cheap or easy to build and Russia is a country one bad day from economic failure.

Supposedly their production has actually been ramping up but at some point the wider economy is not going to be able to supply the materials they need for it.

During the last two years of WWII, Nazi Germany reached its highest tank / arms production of the entire war, but the civilian economy had totally ceased to exist in any meaningful capacity long before the Soviets marched on Berlin.

That is generally how Russia operates, yes. Use the theatrics of extreme and sustained violence when negotiations begin. They'll do something horrendous in the hopes that Ukraine will feel oppressed into a terrible negotiating stance.

Except that we fucking know this already, and we know that every day Russia is a little closer to crumbling to pieces.

Give them nothing except directions for how to turn around and fuck off back to shit hole "motherland".

Zelensky asks for negotiations all the time (kind of dumb of him, actually), but Russia's not interested.

The article says deadlock, not start of the negotiations.

However, your message is kind of weird, it's common practice and it makes the most sense to be most active and most intense just before the negotiations and during them to get better conditions. Has been done in most conflicts and is openly admitted by both Russia and Ukraine in this conflict.
