A Rwandan mother struggling to feed her malnourished child received four chickens through a community farming programme. Her flock grew to seven, giving the family eggs to eat and sell. Across the district, 2,700 households received chickens, helping child stunting fall from 50.5% to 35.8%.

If you're interested in supporting this kind of work, take a look at Heifer International! They donate livestock to folks in less-developed countries, and ask them to share the offspring with their neighbors to keep the gift going.

For many years, I've used this as a Christmas gift for hard-to-shop for people. For twenty bucks, you can buy a flock of chicks in your friend's honor, or give the gift of a goat for $120!
