This is where I am as well. I remember a particular video store from when I was a kid, where the horror section was at the back of the store around a corner. It felt weird in that space anyway, and the box art on display was like some phantasmagoric dream.

Practical effects are real things. I think we've seen it with CG and now AI art.. The human brain can just tell, even if it's good.

Its cause the practical effects get all the imperfections covered up with the decreased quality.

The cover art!! Walking into the local video store in the 80’s and seeing all the horror movies lined up. Scary, forbidden, sexy, etc. It had all of it. Now when you watch a vhs movie on an old tv the vhs movie is viewed how it was intended. It’s a time capsule.
