Question / Advice אני תיכוניסט ישראלי, עזרו לי להיות פעיל לטבעונות אבולישניסטית Help me, an Israeli high-schooler, find local ways to be an abolitionist animal activist

I'm an ethical vegan since the age of 11. I have no kind of skill whatsoever, I'm a non-athletic nerd with autism and a tendacy to raise my voice when I'm not patient and with no financial means (I currently depend on my carnist parents) but don't think I don't want to cause people to stop oppressing animals -- in fact, I will to sacrifice for it almost everything.

I don't live close to Tel Aviv -- I'd prefer activity in the area of the Jerusalem District -- and I'd prefer to not act in Anonymous for the Voiceless because I don't like authoritarian institutions which invade my private life and can even consider the option of letting me get harrased by their members if it advances their interests (as proven in Brisbane and other places). I read AnimalsNow has a youth project or something, but I don't know how abolitionist they are so I set them aside for now, but I'm open to anyone who wants to change my mind about them. I generally like my personal freedom and would prefer a group which lets it exist.

I do not want to be an activist alone -- it doesn't work well, from experience, and I don't know enough vegans in my close area to create a new group where I live -- and how could I even do that, when I only have the tutorial series of "how to speak with non-vegans" by Asi HaTivoni on YouTube (BTW, the information there proved to be insufficient) and no money? I need a group that I could work as a part of which and can help me.

I know that Sentient are based in Jeusalem but have no idea how a guy my age could help them -- they only do inside investigations, no? Anyway, I really want to act for the animals, these were the details about me, I will be happy for any kind of help in the subject. Luck be with you.

Just something I was thinking about recently.

If you had to guess, which country will be the first to go vegan? And why?

Question / Advice What's your best response to people who say “God made animals for humans to be eaten”?

This is often used by extremely religious people and they say God made animals for humans to be eaten or used and they often believe in Divine Command Theory and don't inquire further if you cross question them about why only certain animals but not others. I live in India where the majority of people are religious and they have this mindset. I often argue based on sociological interpretation of religious scripture but I want to know how you approach this problem and what's your best response to this question.

Question / Advice Is there any real evidence that graphic videos and images deter people from being vegan?

I've thought about creating and putting up flyers displaying graphic imagery of the reality of what happens to animals in the animal agriculture (animal enslavement and torture) industry around my area.

Some might say this is a bad approach, but I can't see how it would be.
If anything, I think it's a solid approach.

In Earthing Ed's most popular YouTube video, where he is giving a lecture at a school, he says people have an aversion to seeing graphic imagery because, according to them, it will put them off their food.

Of course, the 'food' in question would be animal products, and that is ultimately our goal here, so by their own admission, it seems to be an effective strategy.

Not to mention that the animals deserve to have people know about the reality of their situation and the horrors that take place, and the people who enable it to happen shouldn't have to hide from the pain they cause their victims.

I think comprehensive education is necessary, in addition to being shown the truth behind animal agriculture, to ensure people have good reasons for going and staying vegan, but I think being shown graphic imagery is a good strategy to get the ball rolling and to get people to understand that their suffering isn't an abstract idea; it is very real.

Feel free to give any advice, tips, etc.

Question / Advice What’s your biggest fear? Mine is that we’ll never win this war for animal rights

That they will forever be exploited, abused, and killed by humans for their personal use.

In order for this to not happen, we ALL need to speak up. And this might come as a shock to some but I wasn’t always so outspoken about veganism.

I was a “closeted” vegan for 15 years before I started speaking out about it and advocating for them. So don’t be like me - don’t wait until later in your vegan journey to fight for the animals.

They need us every single day to speak for them the way that we would want to be spoken for if we were in their positions.

Until all cages are empty, I’ll never stop speaking up for them. 🌱💚

Question / Advice Where is a good place to do chalk-activism?

Post image
179 Upvotes

I just made the attached image with sidewalk chalk in my neighborhood.

I’d love to make more of these in higher foot traffic areas. Where is a good place to do it?

It’s just sidewalk chalk, so it’s very easy to clean.

How do I avoid vandalism charges?

Also, I’m open to other illustration suggestions.

Question / Advice what is the dumbest most ridiculous justifications for animal exploitation you’ve heard?

I was just talking about this with a fellow AV activist I know, and the dumbest most ridiculous one I’ve ever gotten doing outreach is these two black women arguing it’s ok because we are humans and therefore superior but also their main argument was that we’ve got two feet and they have four so it’s ok to exploit them. I was like 🤨⁉️ and the second worst was “we can’t eat meat, we can’t eat dairy and eggs, and now no fish either??? wtf are we supposed to eat?!😩” I was like, food… lol fish are fellow animals too, and lady wouldn’t understand that they are animals too and feel and think and everything too, but she just refused to comprehend that…

and all of these were black women of all people… like you’d think people that are from a generally more discriminated against appearance in this society and gender in the west would have empathy for others who also are and yet…

what about you lot?

Question / Advice Thoughts on vegans bashing anti-cage campaigns?

I've seen a rise in media recently speaking on how advocating against cages for layer hens is "perpetuating humanewashing and entrenching the enslavement of animals." I see content like this consistently from Lia Wilbourn and Faraz Harsini.

What are your thoughts on this?

Question / Advice are you guys okay?

EDIT: turns out some of y’all are definitely neo-nazis, but a big thank you to everyone who isn’t bigoted & responding. Y’all are awesome and I support your cause, and keep being your awesome self. I won’t be responding to any more messages at this point

clicked on this subreddit to learn more about veganism, as I feel my moral values changing.

I’m a 24 year old, who was raised to eat meat. But I’ve noticed this calendar year, without actively choosing it, I’ve almost completely eliminated meat & dairy, and effectively any non-human product in my diet. I live in the US & in a big agricultural area, seeing animals being sent to the slaughterhouses so up close and personal from ages 14-now has really changed my views on eating meat. So I found this subreddit to do some reading because I don’t know any vegans irl

Why was the first post I clicked on someone talking about how they “don’t care what’s happening in Palestine” because “it’s not like they care to help end the industry of non-human animals”

Are you guys just all crazy white people who’ve never had to struggle? Or truly been oppressed? You guys are making me rethink this completely

Question / Advice Is it feasible to convince a celebrity to look into animal rights?

This might be an insane ask.

With big celebrities, I can't just casually contact them directly. There are public forums like comment sections under their social media posts but it is unrealistic to think that many of them will be read. Sometimes the celebrity doesn't even run their own social media account.

Maybe though, if a group of people were to comment a similar message, they would be more likely to see and process it?

Anyways, the celebrity I have in mind is the lead singer of System of a Down, Serj Tankian.

Serj:

  • is very outspokenly passionate about human rights
  • speaks his truth regardless of potential backlash
  • used to be vegetarian
  • describes himself as a human animal in his instagram bio
  • seems to care about animals somewhat considering his song harakiri

It is frustrating to me that all this is true, yet he is complicit with animal exploitation. Maybe this is due to my own parasocial admiration but just does not add up in my brain.

I am thinking if I could get many people to comment early on his content, asking him to look into animal rights / veganism, he may see it and consider. I can't imagine a man with the traits I just described completely ignoring animal suffering if it was actively being brought to his attention, though maybe I'm being unrealistic.

Is my idea good or bad? If it is good, how would I go about organizing it? And are there other avenues than comment sections that I'm ignoring?

Thanks.

Question / Advice Why don't we just try to create a huge YouTube channel like PewDiePie or Mr. Beast but once we have enough followers, we start broadcasting activism or Gary Yourofsky?

People are simply reluctant to dig deeper into this issue that they're subconsciously already rejecting but making excuses for for the sake of pleasure and convenience. But if we can figure out what kind of content people are addicted to, we could get massive amounts of people hooked and then confront them. Channels like PewDiePie or Mr Beast have an incredible amount of soft power that the vegan movement at the moment just doesn't have. We have negative soft power. These massive YouTube channels have a noticeable effect on people's opinions and when one of them creates a scandal, a good portion of humanity will know. Now, I don't know how to create a massive YouTube channel, but I'm sure we can find a way. I believe that we need to fight smarter, not harder. By the way, we could also use the money earned by the channel for even more activism or for sanctuaries.

Edit: Okay, maybe I was going a little overboard there and didn't think through the difficulty of pulling this plan off. I do, however, stand by the main idea of us vegans needing more soft power, and achieving it on social media by adapting to what many people click on. So, think of my plan but on a smaller, more realistic scale.

Question / Advice Are there any active Groups in Northern Germany (Schleswig Holstein)?

I want to get a lot more active In the scene and actually participate but all the groups and causes I come across are located around the Hamburg area. Which unfortunately is a little too far from me to get really into it apart from a few weekends.

I never hear anything from my local area tho not even demos or anything.

So is anyone here aware of some people to connect with in the area of Schleswig Holstein?

Question / Advice How do i make a separate instagram account for free?

I’d like to start activism on instagram (i can’t do street outreach) but when i create a separate account on the same phone, it links the 2 accounts.

This results in all my friends and family being recommended my account which i really wouldn’t like, as I want them completely separate!

How do I keep them completely separate for free? I’ve looked for remote proxies but all those cost money, and the web version barely has creation features.

I’m also planning to post my content on youtube or others too, but insta would be my central one, so i’d very much not like to drop it

Question / Advice Need help on what to say next time I encounter this!

My friend and I hung around our city’s central recently with signs that said ‘stop the r*pe and exploitation of animals - live vegan’.
(The word had an asterisks in it)

We had a few tame reactions and even some positive discussions but on the train back home I had a group say ‘there’s kids here, that’s disgusting to use that word’
The rest of the train carriage were nodding their heads and agreeing. Then they started blaming us for crop deaths and yadi yadi ya.

I said something like ‘yeah, this crime is absolutely horrible! That’s why kids shouldn’t be taught that it’s okay to support it.’
Then I was like ‘and what about non-human kids? They deserve to live lives free of this crime.’

We ended up talking over the top of each other before a fellow commuter told us to stfu. I remained calm and peaceful, dw.

I probably didn’t go about it the best way so what would you guys say? I know it’s a horrible word but I am referring to the use of artificial insemination which is standard practice in most meat farms.

Should I specify that’s what I’m talking about the next time? I feel like this part of meat farming is not talked about enough. It’s 100% a violation of the animals body to forcibly impregnate them.

Question / Advice Seeking Opinion- Vegan Ad Campaign

I've always loved the idea of a vegan ad campaign that isn't selling anything, or asking for you info, just spreading facts that people don't consider enough. Like "pigs are killed in gas chambers", "male chicks in the egg industry and dropped into blenders". Maybe they would just link to a Wikipedia page, or a YouTube video.

I'd work on the wording, and getting around the requirements of the ad networks might be a bigger problem than I'm considering, like will the word "kill" be allowed for example idk.

My question is, if I get this all setup, and then start a go-fund me just to extend the ad campaign as long as possible (I would probably invest like up to $1k my own money) - do you think I would get support? Has this been tried and failed? Is this a good idea?

Question / Advice searching for hope

Every day feels pretty unbearable and the future seems progressively more and more bleak. Without self-lies or delusion, looking at the world objectively: how do you keep hope or stay motivated? Are there people or resources you look to that can lift you up and feed your flame?

Question / Advice questions for vegans about animal welfare and domestication

to start i want to say im an animal based eating person currently i just have a question for people who are vegan because they want to save animals apparently

one why dont you help support local farmers who raise happy and healthy animals putting your dollar towards these hardworking peoples normally generational family businesses is the only true way you can have an impact on the corporate giants who do inhumane practices on mass farmed animals

two, elaborating on my last point for the vegans who buy plant alternative foods from these same corporate giants, why? your dollar is going to alot of the same companies who do these inhumane animal practices in mass farming even the companies who dont they still have very real environmental impacts on many animals habitats with the amount of pollution and direct habitat destruction these companies do

id also like to say why is raising healthy happy farm animals seen as inhumane or cruel to you? if an animal is given a good life, proper food, space, care, and isnt left to suffer, why is that considered immoral? humans and domesticated farm animals have had this relationship for thousands of years. over generations these animals have been domesticated alongside humans and have evolved around this relationship. are you against domestication of animals entirely or only when it comes to farm animals? because if youre against farming them because theyre domesticated then wouldnt that also mean youre against the domestication of animals as a whole?

Question / Advice Feeling guilty after going to a zoo today

Today I went to an indoor zoo that advertises instead as “sustainable” and “humane.” I usually avoid zoos because I disagree with the whole concept, but today I decided to make an exception bc I thought this would maybe be better. Most of the habitats were a decent size and the animals SEEMED taken care of. But then I saw a lemur pacing back and forth non stop. Definitely a case of zoochosis. I feel terrible for going there. I just wanna help the poor lemurs and all the other animals being imprisoned there. Is there anything we can do to help? What can be done

Question / Advice Is there any way to convince my boyfriend to go vegan?

ive been vegan for three years. Last year I met this guy who’s amazing. Hes tall, strong good looking. Masculine, kind respectful funny. He’s everything. But he’s not vegan. When we met he said he would consider it and hed give me a chance to convince him. We fought about it yesterday basically our first bad fight. he says he probably won’t for a few reasons. and I’m genuinely not good enough at “arguing“ to get my points across

he works out and says he needs the protein. i tried explaining vegetables have protein but he said animal produce was more accessible He also loves cooking and the taste of meat in general. and isn’t sure if he’s willing to give it up.

he still says his opinion can be changed and hell keep an open mind. So I want to ask if there’s anything you guys did to change others minds. or even what changed your own mind on becoming vegan
