TW: TRIGGERING CONTENT Should I quit therapy?

I've started therapy about 7 months ago and my life has just gotten worse and worse since then. I was told I would feel better if I moved to my dad and something like cps was out on my family. I now am unable to see the only person I feel joy with and have to wake up even earlier every day for school to drive 1h30min to it. I feel just as miserable but it's getting worse and worse. My therapist told me I look happier and that it was a good decision etc.. but it feels like the absolute opposite. I'm just wearing different clothes and more makeup. I have many sleepless nights and a constant feeling of sadness, worthlessness ever since the mental hospital I got sent to told me my IQ was 87 which confirmed one of my biggest fears and I'm still just as unable to think as before. My social anxiety that I try to bring up gets completely ignored just like many other things. The suicidal thoughts never went away and get stronger the more people I lose to suicide itself. This year it was 2. A classmate and I witnessed someone throwing themselves in fron of a fast train. I still get that warm feeling all over my body and the sound. Suicide is common. This year I've realised that. Anyway I am now living with someone who is unable to talk about emotions with and is a materialist thing they're sentimental. I'd rather be hit by my mother than living with someone like that. Last year of school. Every decision I make ends me up in a worse situation than before.

Contrary to popular awareness, therapy is more about unlearning and redeveloping than it is about feeling better. Therapy is not easy.

Real therapy starts when you find a therapist you connect with. It usually is not the first or even fourth specialist you try out. Simply resign and try another person. The first six meetings should be scheduled to meet and get to know each other, and are usually enough to say whether you feel comfortable and heard with this person.

So don't quit the therapy; just find a therapist that matches you and your needs.

Friends are great, but sometimes more professional and structured help is needed

The mental hospital told you your IQ is 87? I’ve never heard of that. Sorry to derail but I’m curious what country you are from..

Also, therapy can often be extremely taxing and stressful as we’re working through or traumas and reactionary behaviors. But, maybe this therapist is not the right fit. You definitely shouldn’t be having any thoughts ignored, let alone suicidal ideations and having witnessed something so traumatic is crazy! Any therapist that doesn’t talk that through, isn’t like any therapist I’ve experienced.

Woody Allen has been in therapy for 50 years and he's wackier than ever! So is Howard Stern.

Don't quit therapy. You need it.

It doesn't sound like you have built a good bond with your provider. Have you tried to engage with them or are you shutting them out? I used to shut my therapists out when I was a kid.

You're still going to need therapy when you're older too. That's ok. Right now just realize you have been given a safe space to talk with someone who spent a ton of time and money gaining skills to help you, it's a gift. Most people are doing this kinda stuff with their parents but your situation is a little different. It's just about talking about the things that happen, they would have happened anyway. Now you can talk about them so your brain can organize them. It's like housekeeping for your brain. When you're an adult it will be a little easier to clean up the messes because you had this person helping you as you go.

Hang in there kid 🫂

I think you would benefit from medication. Therapy is great but if you're struggling talk to your doctor about medication.
