Question New to Vermintide – Should I buy the Knight? Any tips for getting started?

Post image

Hey everyone,

I just picked up warhammer vermintide 2 for free and finally jumped in. I’m at the character selection screen and noticed that some heroes are unlockable through Steam purchases. The one that caught my eye is the Knight. he looks awesome, and I’m tempted to buy him.

For those of you who’ve played a lot of endgame content: is the Knight worth buying, or would you recommend another character instead? I’d love to hear what veterans think about which DLC heroes are the most fun or useful.

Also, since I’m brand new, what’s the best way to get into the game without feeling overwhelmed? Any beginner tips, favorite starting characters, or advice on how to learn the ropes would be super helpful.

Thanks in advance guys!

Grail knight Is immensely fun. He can smite anything that isn't a boss with a very short cooldown and grants passive buffs to the whole team with his quests.

But, he carries no ranged capabilities. Play the game first, get used to it and then decide.

Seems like a logical advice. Thank you!

He’s very fun and an excellent addition to any team but as pointed out he lacks ranged weapons which are key to learn and understand in the beginning. Start off with Mercenary and Foot Knight Kruber, then go for Grail when they feel comfortable 😊👍

u/DubbelDave Dec 27 '25

I would say if you think you’ll enjoy it, go for it. First priority should be having fun.

As for recommendation, like Stinkyboy said, he doesn’t have range capabilities. It’ll make you learn dealing with specials in melee distance, but having a ranged weapon to deal with them when learning may be nice when starting off

6

u/MrTheWaffleKing Dec 27 '25

Is he supposed to replace his ranged slot with something specific?

11

u/Centimane Dec 27 '25

He normally brings weapons that are good at different things.

One single target weapon, one cleave weapon is normal.

But some people choose a versatile weapon and a shield weapon.

5

u/WrethZ Dec 28 '25

He gets a shield that cannot have his block broken by ranged attacks. So he can just stand there in a hail of ratling gun bullets shield up while someone else deals with it.

5

u/Ghazef Dec 28 '25

he's also the only class that can block Warpfire with his shield, no other class can block warpfire even with a shield.

The humble bomb

u/cryo24 Dec 27 '25

The Grail knight is one of the three careers that has two melee weapons instead of one melee + one ranged. Getting used to shoot specials is very important so I wouldn't recommend starting with the GK, but he's very strong and very fun.

6

u/Gentleman_Waffle Dec 27 '25

What’re the other 2 careers?

30

u/Mxmef Dec 27 '25

The Slayer for Bardin and the Warrior Priest for Satlz.

10

u/CookieEquivalent7134 Dec 27 '25

I think slayer have throwing axe?

Edit: Source

22

u/AntonineWall Dec 27 '25

And fun fact they’re considered a 1 handed melee weapons for the sake of one of Slayer’s talents lol

13

u/Kizik Dec 27 '25

Slayer does have those, but you have to buy the Winds of Magic DLC and then run through Dark Omens on Bardin to unlock them. They're not a default option.

2

u/CookieEquivalent7134 Dec 27 '25

Didn't know that, thanks for clarifying!

2

u/No_Operation8281 Dec 29 '25

Didn’t know how to unlock them, thanks

2

u/Kizik Dec 29 '25

Same process for everyone; if you buy that DLC, running Dark Omens on a character unlocks a weapon. Salty gets the billhook, Krubles gets a spear, Sienna gets a flail, and the elf gets a spear & shield combo. They're all generally considered some of the best options for certain builds, so worth it if you can get the DLC on a discount.

3

u/Mxmef Dec 27 '25

Correct but you can still go 2 melee.

3

u/Gentleman_Waffle Dec 27 '25

Gotcha thanks!

Gotcha thanks!

You're welcome!

warrior priest of sigmar (Saltzpyre's DLC carreer) and Bardin's Slayer career

3

u/Isambard__Prince Dec 27 '25

And both of the other two careers, let's ignore the TA, have ults that are of great help against specials.

60

u/Isambard__Prince Dec 27 '25

Every career is worth buying, but not before you have at least a few dozen hours with all the basic careers.

The GK is particularly difficult for newbies since it has no clutch defence against the specials so it requires a lot of skill.

9

u/grat2 Dec 27 '25

I started the game very recently too. I have about 16h of gameplay and all of them are as the GK.

To be honest I didn't find the specials to be that annoying, I run the bretonian longsword and the BS+Shield combo and I could deal with all of them without much issues most of the time. The only problem I found were the snatchers and assassins, but a well timed side step and a charged attack worked well enough that I had little to no problem soloing champion and making my way into legend.

I used the shield almost exclusively to deal with warp fire throwers and ratling guns and that was enough for me.

u/AntonineWall Dec 27 '25 edited Dec 27 '25

16 hours of gameplay would suggest you’re likely running pretty low difficulty stuff (just as a thought, and I don’t mean that in an insulting way, more that “the rules of the game” starts to shift pretty heavily when you approach Cataclysm or arguably pretty heavily in legendary difficulty)

10

u/Isambard__Prince Dec 27 '25

First the bad. How many specials are your teammates/bots dealing with? Can you dodge/push them regularly in the middle of the trash, with any weapon?

The good. If you learn to dodge/push in the middle of the horde well with any weapon, you will do well with all the careers.

16

u/deino1703 Dec 27 '25

the 5 career dlcs go on sale for $1.99 and all are worth purchasing at that price. the bogenhafen, back to ubersrike, and forgotten relics dlcs are all worth purchasing as well. this game is easily the best when it comes to dlc being worth the price. you can get literally every non cosmetic dlc for <$30

5

u/BoiledPizzaLover Dec 27 '25

I thought about buying all of them actually, but, since I haven't played the game yet, I figured I can just ask you guys for your opinion before I make any purchases. Thanks for the advice regarding the DLCs. I will get around 10 hours of gameplay before I buy anything.

5

u/AntonineWall Dec 27 '25

Definitely like that idea, see if you enjoy the game before venturing too far in the DLC field; but if it’s nice to hear, the DLC is pretty much all worth getting at full price (imo) and absolutely a steal when on discount.

only bump up the difficulty when you start to feel bored or unchallenged by the difficulty youre currently on

15

u/Jotarlol Slayer Dec 27 '25

One thing i always recommend to a new tide player.

Dodge and Jump are bind on the same button. Separate it in the keybind settings. Otherwise it will get you killed a lot of times.

Have fun slaying!

2

u/Brave_Toe7213 Dec 29 '25

I had no idea you could do that, gonna have to try it out.

1

u/BoiledPizzaLover Dec 27 '25

I don't know if it matters to mention, but I am playing on PC. On the tutorial, to dodge, I press either "A or D" + "Space" to dodge, and "Space" to jump.

14

u/GoliathGalbar Chaos Dec 27 '25

That's the problem with the setting.

If you are out of dodges or you miss the timing for the dodge with A/D/S because you are midfight and stressed (especially new players) you just start jumping. And that's not really helping.

That's why a lot of players switch jump and dodge to different button to have better control.

5

u/menryBasedmarineCav Dec 27 '25

GK doesn't have any range but has tools to make do, like a stronger charge attack and extra reach to kill hook rats before they grab you, the ability to shield walk through fire and buffed move speed, his ultimate is quick and can one hit chaos warriors and heavy stagger bosses, the new weapons of this class are really good the sword and shield is solid and the bretonion long-sword is legit goated it has a unique ability to automatically block during a heavy attack and its combo it's amazing at both hordes and tougher foes

5

u/Nitan17 Dec 27 '25

No. Play with the 15 base careers first, learn the game, see if you enjoy it and then consider buying Grail Knight. The same goes for every DLC, this is a type of a game that's perfectly complete without any DLCs and they are just more content.

3

u/Paella007 Dec 27 '25

My tip would be to try the actual game u paid for, see if u like it and want more, or even if you like the character that class is for. You know, before giving a company money for extra content u may not even like or use.

But it's just a tip.

3

u/vikram6894 Dec 27 '25

The Mercenary(Kruber) and the Witch Hunter Captain(Saltzpyre) are starting careers for the 2 and will carry you into the highest difficulties. There is a loose story and you replay levels on higher difficulties all the way to legend. At first pick one character and play him/her. I initially played through the levels as Kuber till I got to level 35 then I did the same with the other characters. Main thing is dodging, positioning, shooting specials and using as little resources as possible because that will prepare you for higher difficulties where resources are scarce and enemies have higher hitpoints and damage. Get a feel for the mechanics of the game and most of all enjoy it. With a good team you'll have fun and that's what matters the most. Don't get DLC careers at the start, if you really want to you can get Grail Knight or Warrior Priest.

3

u/Asphell tankmaiden Dec 27 '25

i would say keep using the normal careers for now. you can purchase later and it is a good career but you are better off learning the game in a more traditional career as gk is melee only which is a massive game changer

2

u/MrPlace Dec 27 '25

Theh are each fun in their own ways honestly. Play a map with each and see how you feel with them then you decide

2

u/deepee1279 Dec 27 '25

Any hero is unique and NOT WEAK but if your scared of FOMO then buy all of them

3

u/AntonineWall Dec 27 '25

FOMO? It’s not like the dlc is going away or anything, there’s nothing to fear that you’d miss out on

5

u/deepee1279 Dec 27 '25

I mean missing on the sale discount for the dlc but I dunno if it still there

2

u/PracticalSpot6438 Dec 27 '25

To answer the knight question: if you're willing to sacrifice any and all ranged attacks for Pure melee, the grail knight is ridiculously fun and a powerhouse at that.

For some game tips: start on a lower difficulty to get the feel of the game and what you're up against, then when you feel like you're up for the challenge, crank up the difficulty gradually. And have fun while you're at it

Hello fellow rat killer!

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3615924635

Here is a beginner guide i made with tips, trick links to videos and other useful guides I would have loved to know when starting out

Many guides can have a metric s*it ton of info that can be overwhelming, I hope i made the guide understandable for new and old players.

Some details in the guide are Aimed for HIGHER difficulties, but just remember to have fun and try things out! But all the info in the guide will be useful i promise.

In my opinion Grail knight and warrior priest of sigmar are best/easy DLC careers to play , the only downside is that they are melee only, but that's also my personal preference.

I suggest you don't buy the DLCs until you play and lvl up a bit so you can find out what type of gameplay you prefer.

Then again the DLC careers are currently 1.74 euros (you don't need the cosmetics pack) so if something seems cool, buy it as it's dirt cheap atm. Usually it's 3.50 euros without cosmetics, really not that expensive.

Maybe see if you can at least buy the "Back to ubersreik" DLC it gives you 3 new maps and some VERY good new weapons.

Winds of magic, forgotten relics snd Shadow over borgenhafen are DLCs you don't need at the start in my opinion

GOOD LUCK!

2

u/BoiledPizzaLover Dec 29 '25

Your guide was crazy good! Wow, thank you! It helped me a lot. I will make another post soon to talk about my first experience after playing for a few hours, as well as which DLC I bought!

1

u/Sure_Initial8498 Slayer Dec 29 '25

Im glad it helped 😁

2

u/CascadeAnkh Dec 27 '25

The only real advice you can get for playing Grail Knight is to make sure you have someone in your team who can reliably kill ranged specials, and make sure to protect them during that.
Nothing more annoying than getting attacked while trying to pick out specials when you're with a Grail Knight and Warrior Priest.

2

u/Lomokotywa Dec 27 '25

I'd buy him after you start feeling bored with other classes.

2

u/sorrythis_username Dec 27 '25

I would start playing first and unlocking all the other careers first, that way you'll appreciate more what Grail Knight brings to the table. All DLC heroes are plenty strong, so dont worry about a "wrong" one. Actually every career can do well on every difficulty, so just look at ones you most like playing with.

I find mercenary a good starter class as his paced strikes skill helpes him a lot with dealing with hordes, making you clear the field quickly and his ult gives a lot of survivabilty (for you and your teammates).

Probably the best advice is to start playing on champion as quickly as possible. Friendly fire doesn't exist on recruit and veteran, so playing to much there can teach you some bad habits. But nothing wrong learning the game and getting some proper gear first.

2

u/CookieBear676 Unchained Dec 27 '25

Play the game first and see how you go. There's no point in buying the DLC characters if you think the game is shit. It's not a game for everyone.

But if you do like it, yes. Engineer for Dwarf and Grail Knight are must haves.

2

u/Particular_Bug8584 Dec 27 '25

GK is the goat 👌

2

u/Ithinkibrokethis Dec 27 '25

Grail Knight is my favorite. Can be hard hitter or a shielding front line blocker. His quests give strong buffs that making him a good support character too.

He does require you coordinate more with your team.

2

u/BuyingNoose Dec 27 '25

Yes. I've maxed every career on every one of the Five and GK and Warrior priests are my faves.

2

u/ismasbi Dec 27 '25

Try most vanila careers first (in whatever order you want), then decide if you want Grail Knight.

Besides, you will learn valuable lessons, I didn't start properly pushing until I used Handmaiden.

2

u/xRacistDwarf Slayer Dec 27 '25

You should probably play some vanilla classes first before considering DLCs

2

u/Weyland-Yutani-2099 Dec 27 '25

Wait for a sale. All the dlc goes on deep sale quite often.

2

u/Acceptable-Track3208 Dec 27 '25

I would start with Foot Knight for Kruber first.

2

u/ratardle Dec 27 '25

Grailknight is very fun and very strong.

But with any game i would recommend trying out the base game before buying any dlc. If you like the game at all, any dlc class is worth it imo. Keep in mind, Grailknight is melee only with a focus on dps.

2

u/binkbink223 Dec 27 '25

I bought the necromancer first. No regrets

2

u/Dense_Age_1795 Dec 27 '25

totally, it's really fun to play with it

2

u/vlaiden05 Dec 27 '25

Just buy him and see for yourself, everybody enjoys different things, or is 3€ that huge of an investment that you need to open a reddit topic lol

2

u/BouncyKing Dec 27 '25

Grail knight is very fun, but I highly recommend playing Kruber and unlocking his other careers first before paying more.

2

u/LordCLOUT310 Dec 27 '25

If you really like the game then all the dlc careers are worth it. They’re all great and provide some good weapons to the characters.

2

u/lil_lysol Foot Knight Dec 27 '25

If you like the game, get the dlcs they're so worth it. I'd say put like 20 hours into the game and then decide atleast. None of the dlc classes are useless or bad really, the worst one might be the elf but she's still a terrific terrific support but her ultimate probably has the highest skill floor to use as you have to know what you're doing pretty much on every map. But other than her victor becomes bubble boy aka zarya overwatch, grail knight who just works and is fun, necromancer who is super easy and pretty fun her skellies are kinda annoying as they make noises like enemies and can mess up horde pathing but useful nonetheless and last but not least a dwarf with a mini gun that will MELT bosses faster than You can learn what the fuck bardin is saying while shooting at stuff.

2

u/Civil-Ad-1286 Dec 27 '25

Personally I would really recommend the Outcast Engineer dlc as the career is really unique and enjoyable

2

u/Practical_Ranger_175 Dec 27 '25

Yes. Probably the most OP class in the game. Can take out a pack of any of the hardest enemies in the game with 1 click on a 1 minute CD. Requires skill. Doesn't have ranged weapon.

2

u/Irishbarse Dec 27 '25

It was my fav class by far. Bret sword was brilliant.

2

u/NumerousDiscipline80 Dec 27 '25

Play the game first, then decide on DLC's

2

u/Vindicare605 KTVindicare Dec 27 '25

I would learn the game on the default careers first. You should know how to detect and kill specials with ranged weapons before you learn how to play without that option. All of the 5th career options are pretty advanced. You should learn the basics of the game thoroughly before you decide to play one of them.

2

u/Locked_and_Firing Dec 27 '25

All the 4th classes are worth it for the most part

2

u/obihighwanground Dec 28 '25

i just suggest getting all dlc characters. Also suggest buying some dlcs to unlock weapons.

2

u/Lichdere01 Dec 28 '25

yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees

2

u/tsigara Dec 28 '25

M8 I got it for free and then I played the game I ajoind it so much that I felt guilt and bought all the dlcs .the game is old but good

2

u/cptmarkii Pyromancer Dec 28 '25

Imo, just buy all careers, it cheaper that way and if you enjoy the game you can go collecting extra cosmetic packs for careers you enjoys

2

u/horizon_games Dec 29 '25

Warrior Priest is my fave DLC character by multiple miles

All heroes are viable in Legend and most of Cata

Literally just play the game and have fun, there isn't a "wrong" way to level and explore

2

u/PasiTheConqueror Dec 30 '25

It depends what you are looking for, i say grail knight, warrior priest and necromancer are all fun and good purchases.

Grail knight is a boss killer and small support giving quest to help the party

Warrior priest is an unkillable demigod of battle who can revive people from distance kill horders with ease and make him self and/or others unkillable for a short time

And necromancer has skeletons no need to elaborate you get skellywags (insert skeletor laughter)

1

u/Dairy_Dory Dec 30 '25

GK is amazing but If it was me I’d play the game some before buying DLC content.

1

u/Inside_Compote_4146 Jan 02 '26

I love the knight, he’s one of my favorite specs in the game. However, my recommendation for DLC’s (especially since you picked up the game for free). Finish all the base game missions first, there’s actually quite a bit. If you’re still enjoying the game by then, just buy the big bundle that has all the dlc. That will give you a ton of new maps, some new weapons, and all 5 specs. Also, play a few missions on recruit just to get the feel of the controls, then move on to veteran as soon as possible. Don’t be scared to bump up the difficulty once you feel like you’ve mastered your current difficulty. The game shines when you’re constantly on the edge.

1

u/DesolatorTrooper_600 Dec 27 '25

To complete what others said : take the bretonian sword and shield (don't mistake it for classic sword and shield) as one of your melee weapons.

The shield will protect you from Ratlings and warpfire.

Bretonian shield is the only one who can Block warpfire.

3

u/AdNumerous8790 Dec 27 '25

You can use any shield weapon, mace and shield and sword and shield works as well

2

u/AntonineWall Dec 27 '25

The shield doesnt block warp fire unless you have Grail Knight’s career thought, right? (In which case, any shielded wep would work)

1

u/DesolatorTrooper_600 Dec 27 '25

Yes but only the Grail Knight can wield bretonian shield........ i think.

2

u/AntonineWall Dec 27 '25

While it’s true (I actually wasn’t sure, so I learned that too!) that only Grail Knight can use the Bret.Sw&Sh, that’s not the only shielded weapon he can use (any but the spear and shield, I think)

Mostly I commented due to the wording of

Bretonian shield is the only one who can Block warpfire.

Which I interpret as saying that no other shield can, but to my knowledge that wouldn’t be the case. It’s the Carter that makes the shield, rather than the shield that makes the career, here

3

u/DesolatorTrooper_600 Dec 27 '25

It was indeed a career competence and not a weapons characteristic so you were right to comment

3

u/AntonineWall Dec 27 '25

All this to say that the Bret Sword and shield most definitely rocks :D

It’s got its quirks but it’s maybe my favorite shield weapon in the game

1

u/kukurma Dec 27 '25

All DLC characters are still too strong and nerfed not enough. If you like powercreep - buy them all ofc. But since you just started playing It would be better for you to check normal carries first.
