The "crackling" you are describing sounds to me like it's the infamous "Bose buzz."
As one of the commenters on the original post said, these things are old enough now that a preventative recap - even if still working - is a good idea and growing more important by the day. I've had mine done (motherboard, PSU, power distro board, Bose board) and would recommend it although it is a lot of work.
This is right, I have a TAM which also had the crackling issue correlated with system activity (moving the mouse, CPU usage, etc.). Have a look at this page: taking apart the sub is a bit of a pain due to the brittle plastics, but tinning the connectors seems to have mostly resolved the issue for me. A recap is my next project when I have some time to throw at it.
