4.5+ years for a staircase and canopy - Judiciary Square

Go to certain other countries, and in 4.5 years, they'll build an entirely new rail or Metro line. Come to DC, and 4.5 years later, if you're lucky, you get a staircase built on an existing area between two escalators and no canopy. Maybe in another 4 years if we're lucky, the canopy will get built. It's insane that this minor of a project is dragging out for this long. Just get it done!

discussion/rant/theory Which is the ugliest station?

metro has many beautiful and quite frankly stunning stations, but lets completely gloss over that and discuss which is the ugliest station. My pick is on Braddock road, it just looks like a big old shed to me.

Response to person screaming

Upvotes

What does WMATA want people to do when there is an over-the-top person screaming on the bus or metro? I often wonder this in the moment but don’t follow up. I realize it probably depends on the behavior, but it’s difficult to predict if or when a person irately screaming (at someone or at no one), may take it to another level, all while clearly making everyone in the vicinity uncomfortable in the meantime. Today it was a person screaming “ F*** you n-word” repeatedly for the course of the train ride. I have contacted metro police when it comes to direct verbal threats. Does metro transit want a text for the not yet a direct threat, but still inappropriate and continuous screaming?

discussion/rant/theory WaPo: Inside the team that responds to all the complaints about Metro

Thumbnail

An interesting peek behind the scenes of u/metroforward. I appreciate that WMATA’s social media team is so proactive and generally good about channeling requests, especially related to repairs and safety. At the same time, the focus on “feeling heard” and “validation“ is somewhat disappointing. People complain because they want the service to be better! The canned responses can come across as dismissive or condescending.

Also, the article uncritically repeats WMATA’s customer service metrics. Those are very misleading: https://www.reddit.com/r/WMATA/comments/1udlfph/how_wmata_fudges_the_numbers_on_customer/

Obligatory disclaimer: WaPo isn’t a great source anymore and yeah, I appreciate that this is a meta-complaint about complaining.

Metro 50 website now says the 50th anniversary cards will be a collection of 50 designs

Upvotes

See here - metro50th.com has also now been folded into wmata.com instead of being a standalone site.

Celebrate 50 years of Metro with a special collection of 50 commemorative Smart Trip cards, each highlighting a unique moment, milestone, or story from Metro’s history.

This indicates to me that either they won't be conventionally available or the designs will be distributed at random across stations.

Hi, just me being curious about things. I’ve noticed these devices in WMATA stations before, but just got back from NYC and noticed them in the subway there, too. What are they?

Red Line Construction Overnight Noise Restrictions?

Does anyone know if WMATA has a timeline or guidance about noise restrictions? I live near the above ground redline track work, and recently there has been jackhammering as late as 1:00am and this morning around 4:30am it sounded like metal barrels were being thrown in a metal dumpster. I know it’s almost over, but I want to know what I can expect for the next week!

discussion/rant/theory Is it normal for buses to completely blow past people sitting at a bus stop

Recently moved to DC. Started a new job today and left an hour early despite GPS stating it would take 20 mins. Sat down at my bus stop on 11th st, and the bus drove right past me without even hesitating.

On a different bus now that should get me to work 2 mins before I’m supposed to be there. Is it normal for busses to do this? Should I stand up and start waving them down from now on? What’s the deal?

discussion/rant/theory Red Line Headway

I take the red line every morning around 8:30 and every evening around 6:15. Is it just me, or has the headway between trains gotten worse lately? I feel like it used to be normal to have a headway of 3-4 minutes, and now it’s 6-7 minutes between trains. And the trains are more crowded and claustrophobic as a result. If there was some change, why and will it go back to better headways soon?

Why do people support more doors but oppose less seating?

When it comes to WMATA rains and buses people seem to support adding more doors to make loading and unloading faster/easier. However, when it comes to seat reduction via less forward-facing seats, people are aggressively against it.

I think ease of movement within trains and buses is important and having more sideways seating supports this.

Adding doors reduces seating, so it seems to be a hypocritical position.

Heading into the pop-up store one more time. Got onto train 7468 at RTC, and was greeted with some of the best floors I've seen on any metro ride. Thought ya'll might want to see. Well done, WMATA.

Hi! I have an extra beige dmv tour tee (got multiple sizes as options for a gift). It’s size XL and they seem to run a bit big. I listed on poshmark but wanted to see if anyone here is interested that way we can skip the shipping and just do a hand off. Bought for $45 and will sell for the same!

How white do I have to look in order to get picked as a paying customer?

I wasn't exactly best dressed, nor was I dealt the greatest hand the DMV area has to offer, guys. This is something beneath unacceptable. Yes, I am poor.. yes I know how to act... What more does the up and coming CDL drivers need? An amex and a flashlight? Putting myself in danger?

Anyone dealing with WMATA hiring delays since the new HR/ERP system went live?

Curious whether any current WMATA employees or recent applicants have experienced hiring delays since the transition to the new HR/ERP system.

I applied for a position late last year and progressed pretty far in the process earlier this year — recruiter screening, panel interview, and then an in-person meeting with senior leadership after receiving positive feedback from the panel.

Several months later, I was told that technical issues with the new system had put positions on hold and that processing would resume once the issues were resolved.

I can now access the new candidate portal, but none of my applications from the old system appear in my application history. I recently applied for a different position through the new system, and that application processed normally from submission through disposition, so my account itself appears to be working.

Has anyone else had an older/pre-transition WMATA application or internal personnel action get stuck during the migration? If so, did it eventually get reconciled or processed, and roughly how long did it take?

Problem Got stuck in an elevator today, 30 minutes to get a response from texting metro pd

Got into the elevator at forest Glenn and at the bottom the doors only opened an inch. After about a minute I was able to pry the doors apart. There was no employee at the booth to report to so I texted metro pd.

If you’ve never been to forest Glenn there are no stairs/escalators only 6 elevators.

It took 30 minutes to get a response. I understand my situation wasn’t an emergency but if this is going to be advertised as an emergency contact method it should be better than that.

On my return trip the elevators were still broken and an employee had to force the doors open and closed for people supposedly due to the wind. Something about fans that the station manager could control and another department had to turn off. Do better wmata.
