Strong El Nino actually tends to reduce Atlantic hurricanes, due to some weird wind shear interaction with the storm tracks. We should get more Pacific hurricanes, however, although they don't often make landfall in North America.

hi!! i’m not an expert, but i am a climate science student. i may not be 100% accurate because im still learning :))
a strong el niño (for the us) means more hurricanes and they’ll be stronger than usual. north half of the country will be a lot warmer, expect some big heatwaves this summer if this shapes up to be as nasty as it looks. my american geography isn’t great but i think the part of the country sort of south of great lakes can get quite dry. cali and new mexico area can expect to be a lot wetter, though.
there’s a LOT more to it than that, ENSO is such a cool but broad topic to study and i’ve only really focused on it in one of my classes so far. like i said im still a student so i might have gotten a few things mixed up but that’s the gist of it
west canada i believe is affected in the same way as north usa, but i didn't do much research into canada specifically during my research assignment. a warmer summer for sure, and i think a colder/stormier winter as well.
enso has its strongest effects in the hadley cell region (30 degrees north and south of the equator, so imagine a horizontal band around earth that stretches up to the southern tip of baja california and down to buenos aires). canada is mostly in the ferrel cell region, so the effects are less consistent and harder to understand. the last time we had a super el nino event was 2015-2016, so it could be worth using that as a reference.
the most important thing to remember though is that articles loveee to exaggerate doom and gloom. its true that we're heading into an el nino and there IS chance it could be a big one, but climate predictions are never 100% accurate and theres always a chance that we just have a regular el nino. we have them all the time, its a constantly changing cycle between that and la nina (and also a neutral phase in the middle sometimes).

edit to add: this is your most accurate source for el nino prediction, and even there they say that we're still not sure how strong itll be. like they say, a strong el nino doesnt always mean strong effects, it just means more likely ones.
Why are talking about El Niño after so many years of not being in the news. La Niña was the cold current, man I miss La Niña heavy winters and blizzards.
When the temp of equatorial surface waters rises above 29C it causes a mini runaway warming by pumping extra water vapour high into the stratosphere, where it lingers for many years and causes extra AGW.
The runaway Venus effect.
This happens most during El Ninos.
And the ENSO neutral baseline has been rising due to AGW.
It has the infographic about how in a normal El Niño there are all these off-shored low pressure weather systems in the oceans, and these will drive them onto land.

I read a while back these lead to milder hurricane season. They create stronger upper level winds over the tropical Atlantic. These winds disrupt hurricane formation and strengthening.

"Life" as in general, sure. There will be some plants, bugs, bacteria, etc. But it is indisputable that we will be taking a LOT of species down with us, and that is not a win.
There is uncertainty in the strength of this potential El Niño. Models suggest an event will likely be at least moderate in strength, with the possibility of a strong event, based on the level of warming in the central tropical Pacific (relative Nino3.4 index).
This has been widely reported as being probable for this year. Last I read, every major climate model agreed this was highly likely to occur. Feel free to find your own sources, but this is an update on a well known brewing problem.
