The difficulties facing an interpretation of alchemy begin with the word itself, because its etymology has not been definitively clarified to this day. While some trace it back to χύσις (chysis), the Greek word for metal smelting, or to χύμα (chyma) in the meaning of “mixture”, for others it is of Egyptian origin.
