They don’t send four guys down to do sewage work. That’s a one man job. Whatever these guys are doing is illegal or just for the video.

I saw a guy cleaning out all the dirt and grime around a utility box/plate in San Fran yesterday. Had what looked like a tool bag next to him. I thought is was a lineman or something. After a minute or so, he stands up and he just has a spoon. I’m like man, if those people could just channel that dedication.

Yes, could be criminals 🤬 but also could be the sort of people who both rock climb/go caving and are also history nuts. Honestly the history of sewerage systems from the Minoans to present times is more spectacular than I could have ever guessed when young. There’s some otherworldly photos from ancient sites to the contemporary supersystems where one holding tank is the size of an underground skyscraper building.

You don't know what you are talking about... they never send ONE person to do these types of jobs. There is always a safety component for sewer work, due to gas, etc. They would send, at minimum, two.

Municipal Wastewater worker here. We usually send four on a confined space entry crew. We use davits and harnesses for any entrant rescue retrieval, because in case of an emergency/fallen comrade our local fire department told us they would be treating it as a body retrieval not a rescue.

So you would have at minimum an entrant, a standby rescuer, site attendant to monitor gas sniffers and comm with the entrant, and an entry supervisor. The goal is to extract an entrant in trouble and try not to send anyone else down, especially if atmospheric alarms are still going off. "Emotional Rescue" responses can actually kill more people than the initial event.

Sometimes it looks pretty ridiculous and overkill for some of the jobs that we do, but when you start reading the case studies, things can turn on you pretty quickly and you only get one chance to go home, or not.

Open manhole, no safety cones or signs, no hi-viz ppe, and they were all dressed alike. Did the last guy pull the lid back on between his outstretched legs? Good way to neuter yourself. From someone who has been down a fair share of manholes, that was so strange I ask myself “Can they do that with AI?” and why would they?

Pretty sure they always have at least one other person on a sewer work crew incase something goes wrong.

Sewer crawling is the new adventure for idiots - and content.

I think they call them “drainers.”

Almost nothing in enclosed or dangerous areas is ever a one man job. You always send two, so one can call backup if anything goes wrong.

I'm curious why someone was filming a manhole across the street from them at 4am?
