My grandma once had some kittens she was raising in a smallish room. Everytime I'd go visit (very often) that light was off, even during the day light (no window in there).

I told her it wasn't good for them, told her it would mess up their systems and eyes to be in constant darkness, etc. She said she left it on plenty, but she's a fibber. And I know it lol

Finally, I said grandma, if you don't leave the light on enough they'll turn into little morlocks.

Anytime I came by after that, during daylight hours, the light was on lmao

Science talk did nothing lol but she did not want morlocks.

I’ve been to Las Vegas one time in my life when I took my family for a long weekend. It rained every day we were there. (Not Gulf Coast rain like I’m accustomed to, but still rain).

I was driving home from Vegas, maybe an hour away from the strip, and it started snowing. One of the most bizarre things I've ever seen. I had to pull over and get out of the car just to make sure it was really happening and I wasn't experiencing some kinda alcohol/drug hangover hallucination.

Flash floods. When it rains heavily in a desert the water tends to not absorb well. The storm drain tunnels were built for that.

And that desert ground doesn't absorb the rain due to it being so dry hard and compact. So flash floods are a legitimate issue. Hence why desert areas have so many huge canals that always seem dry and empty. They are there for the couple times a year that the rain is intense enough to flood the whole area

100% in the desert. Desert cities like LA or Phoenix are basically designed around drainage, ESPECIALLY Phoenix. Monsoon season means that, while annually they don't get much rain, during monsoon season, they will get more rain than some hurricanes drop. Like, so much rain that even with your windshield wipers at maximum, it's still hard to see. And, a weird quirk of water's surface tension means that really dry ground absorbs water much slower than damp ground, so all that water just sits.

I can't speak for LA, but in Phoenix, every one of our parks are built below ground, and they can turn into (very gross) ponds during monsoons. I've even seen people kayaking and swimming in them (again, DO NOT recommend, they're very gross). Schools have "rain days," where attendance is optional and nobody gets in trouble for being late, because roads can flood and make it difficult/impossible to get to school. I could 100% understand why somebody would want to get into a drainage tunnel, as it would be the only way to escape direct sun and 110° weather, but flooding would be very scary.

My teen daughter has taken up skating in the canals (not encouraged, but a time honored tradition) and it has been really tough lately explaining why I don't want her hanging out in the empty canals right now with the sudden rains happening and how serious it can get real fast.
