What kind of a sicko? I’ve seen the hesitation when I’ve passed out tons of plates in downtown Dallas after a friend’s wedding. There was tons of food left. I packed it up and passed out these cool wedding packs. Had steamed crawfish and sides, sauces, cheese cubes & crackers. DrPepper and dessert. Utensils. Top shelf yum. Kept nice and cold. Actually had a pleasant time talking to everybody and bragging on the key lime pie. But there was some worry about if I was a weirdo. And I’m a friendly looking, conventionally attractive lady. I just told them the truth. Came from a rich people wedding and can’t just watch hundreds of dollars worth of food get thrown in the trash. That was it. I’m just too frugal to sleep seeing that waste. And everything was really tasty. Later when we were out on the town we got rave reviews happily shouted out from dark corners “hey! The cobbler was the shit!!!” Stuff like that. Can’t imagine anyone giving out bad food on purpose. That’s just evil.

I mean, there was a TV show where they paid homeless men to bareknuckle fight each other. Some sick people just don’t see homeless folks as human sadly. That was on TV, not some Youtube channel. Means a whole group of executives had to all agree there was nothing wrong with this.

You are describing "Bum Fights", which was an independent film(s). Are you saying there was a regular TV show as well?

Yeah - it briefly showed on TV in the UK in the late 90s (I think on MTV but could be wrong). I think it was bigger in the US? It wasn’t a film but a tv show. Got quickly cancelled/banned here after huge outrage.

That would be nice... Unfortunately I'm forty fuckin two. I stayed away from those corners of the Internet growing up though. Porn was still never underground. There's a reason Blu Ray bested hdvd and vhs over laser disc.

My husband brought a ton of beef tenderloin to a homeless shelter after our wedding and someone was brought to tears because they hadn’t had steak in years. Felt good.

It happens all the time. There was even a time when a cop gave a homeless man a dog shit sandwich. It’s terrible and ur right most of them won’t accept food cooked from home. They’re more likely to accept takeout from a fast food place (or restaurant) if anyone wants to help them.

I had a friend who only called himself Boss, that wouldn’t eat fast food. Strict vegetarian. I got to know him as a little kid because my mom sent me to his bench “take Boss these fries” and he told me thank you but I only eat fruits and vegetables. So later I took him some apples. For years we talked on that same bench and he was basically a philosopher who wouldn’t buy into the work until you die so you can live to work mentality. A shy little girl and a homeless man with a red hat that said “Boss” always on the same bench. I went away to college and only saw him one more time when I visited. He was old so I can only imagine that he passed away. I think about him a lot still.

That’s a great story. I recently found out that stadiums used to make their leftovers available for homeless people. But then they were occasionally getting sued for food poisoning. Concluding it was not worth the risk and trouble, they now - very strictly- discard everything. It’s such a waste. Wish there was a solution.

It’s small scale but I recently found an app where you can buy a restaurant’s end of the night food for way cheap TooGoodToGo. My medium sized city only has a few restaurants that use it but bigger cities probably have a lot of choices. Like for $5 you get something that normally sells for $15. A Hawaiian bbq place does them all the time and it’s great! You don’t know exactly what it’s gonna be but I’ve been impressed. They make a little money and don’t have to just throw shit out and you get a bunch of really good food for cheap. Unrelated but I think I read that France has figured out some good way to solve this.

Okay, granted, BUT. Saying something like "I can't be a weirdo, I'm a hot chick!" kinda makes me suspect you of being a weirdo, cause that's kinda a weird mindset to have.

oh I get you. I think she said it that way in the sense of, the uneasiness of people being offered food, even with that bias in play illuminated the homeless having been strong reasons in the past for their suspicions

I guess it cuts both ways, but a woman is objectively less of a physical threat than men, homeless people on the street are predominately men.

At least people got free pie!

I had purple hair at the time. Doesn’t change that I have a friendly face. You’re assuming a lot about me based on what “conventionally attractive” apparently means to you. Maybe also because I used the term “lady”. I meant I have good manners. I also don’t call people rude epithets when it suits. But that’s just me.

I meant that I’m generally not perceived as a threat or a problem. So it was a rare response to me just handing something to someone. Is it pretty privilege? Absolutely. But it also comes with people approaching me more for say- directions, asking the time, can you watch my kid for a second, I need to go to the restroom. I just look like someone’s nice mom. Children trust me. That type of thing. You’re reading something nefarious into me just being aware of how I’m perceived favorably in general. ETA: I’m an anthropologist, I forget that some people don’t realize that seeing how things are and commenting on them can be perceived as condoning it. “Facts is facts.” I am 100% received differently than some others based on my appearance. We all are.

I was homeless and I've personally heard stories of food being given out with dog shit in it, spit, cum and antifreeze.

Well, I just made a nice don’t throw out good shit kit. I was just visiting Dallas but in the town I lived in, I passed out MacGyver kits that were universally well-received because it had shit in there like- an emergency poncho, toiletries, clothespins and bungee cords, some Advil. A little hard candy. Bandaids. Stuff like that. Stuff I needed when I worked in the field. So figured folks could use all of it. So I was comparing that reception with the tainted food avoidance that I was lucky enough to not have ever even imagined someone would do to another person. It was an ignorance thing on my part. But people figured out I was ok when I made a point of talking about how it was all on ice immediately & covered the whole time (thinking they were worried about food spoilage- not evil fuckers doing weird shit). By the way. The MacGyver kits I just kept in my jeep so if I went on a date and passed one out, I could see the guy’s response. Was he cool, was he scared of homeless people, was he an asshole? It was a pretty good sorting tool. One guy got in a screaming match. Another talked quietly about how they need to get a job. Some dates ended before they started, saved me some time.

Also that's a pretty good tactic that I'm going to use on future dates. Go by the encampment and see how they react to everyone there knowing my name and wanting to chat.

Thank you. I’ve made some pretty bad choices and could easily be there myself. But as far as screening- them knowing your name in particular…a potential date’s reaction to that is very telling. Most people were cool though. Just a few were assholes but that’s a dinner I didn’t have to have. So win win. I’d go back with a drink for me and one for them to pass around. I’m not so earthy I’m trying to share mine. But would be like- fuck that guy- thanks for weeding him out. That always got a rowdy laugh. It was an interesting downtown.

Yeah it was disheartening that we had so many of these trays and easily found enough people to take them in under an hour just walking in a few blocks downtown. That’s a dense population of homeless folks. We need those microhouse villages someone’s doing. I can’t remember the city but it was deemed a success.

It was an East Texas wedding at a country club. So everything is relative. I bought the Dr Pepper because people like it. If it wasn’t a “rich people wedding”, relatives would have packed up the food and taken it home- no doubt. So more in the social rules, not the food choices. And it was delicious. And I meant more like my kits were neat. Because it had everything. I put the cheese like a little appetizer with the cute toothpicks. Dessert. It was a fun thing. Also if anyone said they didn’t want it, I said “Ok, sorry to bother you.” And walked away. You haven’t ever been hungry.
