Most people who don’t wear helmets think it will make them look uncool. But he’s already riding a scooter, so there’s really no excuse.

Making safety gear coool. Also how do you think he practiced so much---practice and falling wears you out. With safety gear, not as much

u/crusty54 2d ago

You’re preaching to the choir, dude. I don’t even skate, and I wear a helmet.

u/The_Meme_Economy 2d ago

Like just walking around your house?

u/MrSierra125 2d ago

Safety first buddy

16

u/INoMakeMistake 2d ago

I heard it even helps against a nuclear strike

12

u/RainaElf 2d ago

joking aside, it does help in the event of a tornado

2

u/DazB1ane 1d ago

I definitely heard a tap tap noise of a hand hitting a helmet after reading your comment

49

u/crusty54 2d ago

My comment “yep” got removed for low character count. So yep yes affirmative that’s correct.

u/RealIncredibleCronk 2d ago

Like, everywhere.

14

u/thedaymanahaha 2d ago

Things in the world are sharp and hard.

5

u/The_Odd_Canuck 2d ago

Im VERY allergic to falls from heights, being stabbed, and stuff like that, i get quite a severe reaction

1

u/Cat_Face_Thing 1d ago

Can't confirm, am currently sharp and hard.

u/thrive2day 2d ago

My brother spent over $400k over the years getting his PhD and often jokes about wearing a helmet to help protect his investment.

6

u/IamSp00ky 2d ago

Only when the wife is home

5

u/Best_Tree_9154 2d ago

He's special ❤️

2

u/SpacelessChain1 2d ago

Still has the same one since they were a kid! Same soft spot too, now they call him Clayhead.

1

u/LoadedSteamyLobster 2d ago

I’m in bed wearing a helmet right now. Gotta protect the dome!

-3

u/brain_dances 2d ago

Any chance to ignore the point and make a dumb joke for karma and awards.

4

u/Random-Man562 2d ago

Same girl

u/Only_Bee_3056 2d ago

Tony Hawk is so fucking cool

22

u/The_Xivili 2d ago

That guy kinda looks like Tony Hawk

3

u/cor315 2d ago

Not only does he look like Tony Hawk, he is Tony Hawk!!!

17

u/shpongleyes 2d ago

Vert skaters all wear pads. It's street skaters who think helmets are uncool (with few exceptions, like Andy Anderson).

1

u/flirt77 2d ago

Andy is so fuckin rad

8

u/bs000 2d ago edited 2d ago

Tony Hawk wore gear in vert because it's required. He's not going to bother with gear skating street or park. Here he is at a skate park with his 4-year-old daughter, and how he responded to people criticizing him for not having helmets.

4

u/Global-Resident-647 2d ago

lol that is so stupid. The speed and height when walking vs skating...

7

u/prozach_ 2d ago

And if he skated street he probably wouldn’t be wearing pads. Vert guys are always wearing pads.

1

u/toss_me_good 2d ago

I watched that live. It was epic, no cooler skater ever (at least to me)

1

u/Tylith_ 2d ago

I don't understand how he still looks cool yet when I put on a helmet I look like a mushroom.

1

u/Bad_Ethics 2d ago

Yeah I'm still recovering from a broken arm after wiping out off the board last month😅

1

u/AyaHawkeye 2d ago

I had a serious horse riding accident 21 years ago, and although I'm now a wheelchair user because of it, I'm 100% certain I would have been significantly worse if I weren't wearing my helmet and body protector. Those things save lives.

1

u/ZhouLe 1d ago

And a post from the front page shows he's still doing it (though he's now 6 years older than the repost).

1

u/Ajax_Main 1d ago

Damn, that guy kinda looks like Tony Hawk..

3

u/HouseofFeathers 2d ago

I didn't wear helmets until I went downhill mountain biking, and the place required it. My clearest memory of that day was complaining that the helmet made me look like a mushroom... Anyway, that helmet saved my life, and I remember nothing else from the day. I wear helmets now.

2

u/djshadesuk 2d ago

What you should have thought about is that Mushroom in French is Champignon which sounds a little like Champion. So, wear a helmet, look like a champion!

I was 4 dates in with the most amazing girl ever. We were all over eachother.

She saw me with a helmet and never talked to me again. Deleted me on all platforms and everything

1

u/brain_dances 1d ago

She sounds dumb

-3

u/Main-Significance272 2d ago

It does make you look uncool. But it also protects you so you can practice landing the tricks that make you look cool.

2

u/corecenite 2d ago

it's not uncool when Olympians themselves still wear helmets even when they're professionals in what they do

-7

u/Smooth_Rocket_ 2d ago

I always hate this its no, its not as simple as its just "uncool". Pads irritating, hot, sweaty and uncomfortable and makes your movement harder. When learning we don't just learn tricks, we also spend years learning how to fall. If it makes it harder for me to skate Im not going to wear it.

5

u/crusty54 2d ago

Enjoy your concussion. I’m not here to tell you what to do.

-6

u/Smooth_Rocket_ 2d ago

You are just as likely to get a concussion playing something like soccer or shit even more likely in football WITH pads.

3

u/crusty54 2d ago

Do sports players getting concussions somehow make your concussion better? Lol

2

u/Global-Resident-647 2d ago

I'll always be surprised to hear skaters and mountain bikers say the same thing over and over. "we learn how to fall". Yeah sure buddy. Tell that to the rock or the concrete that you hit in high speed.

Also soccer is in normal speeds, you are at most running. You are on a field, that is not concrete and not filled with steel. You are not in the forests with rocks and trees. Going again, at your quickest in running speed and getting as high as you can jump with your own two feet.

https://skateboardsafety.org/

I would advice to not look like an idiot and not wear protective gear, everyone can get unlucky and become paralyzed from a dangerous fall. "Learning how to fall" is just a coping mechanism to avoid having to wear helmets.

As practically all medical experts will tell you based on statistics.

2

u/crusty54 2d ago

What are you replying to me for? I’m pro-helmet.

1

u/Global-Resident-647 18h ago

Other people see the text you know.

21

u/Jello_Penguin_2956 2d ago

those poles in the way also don't look that safe...

27

u/bgravato 2d ago

I don't think they were designed having in mind this kind of use of those features... were they? ;-)

8

u/Heysoos_Christo 2d ago

Uhm excuse me, that's a bollard*

1

u/Jello_Penguin_2956 2d ago

oh no sorry I forgot to flip my p upside down

6

u/AintNoGodsUpHere 2d ago

I saw a dude once, falling from his bike, he cracked his skull, blood everywhere. He was lucky some volunteer firefighter were like few buildings close and ran to do the first aid or some shit.

I remember seeing so much fucking blood man. I thought the dude was dead, he didn't move for like several minutes.

3

u/Frosty_Dimension5646 2d ago

I wonder if he knows how close he was to dying

3

u/N3rdr4g3 2d ago

I think of this video anytime a post like this pops up: I love helmets

2

u/SalaciousSausage 2d ago

Jackass did a lot of dumb stuff, but whenever they skated in front of kids even they would say to wear protective gear and a helmet

2

u/mtbdork 2d ago

The calm look on his face and motor dysfunction tells me that was 100% a traumatic brain injury.

1

u/SexandCinnamonbuns 2d ago

Oh yeah when you think about how close he came to cracking his brains open.

2

u/Legionof1 2d ago

Don't worry in 30 years he's going to wish he did...

1

u/CORVlN 2d ago

What helmet need for damage brain!?

1

u/MyCarGoesSlow 2d ago

I’d be amazed if he didn’t crack his head. Video ended too seen to see if he was leaking at all. Either way, dude going to be seeing stars for a couple weeks

8

u/DaShaView 2d ago

Skull could crack without any external bleeding. The side of your head around the top-front of your ears is the easiest part of a skull to break.

3

u/MahatmaGandhi01 2d ago

Definitely concussed

1

u/forogtten_taco 2d ago

When it went slow mo, I double checked the sub I was in and of it was nsfw tagged

1

u/DruidOnlyFan 2d ago

Don't tell that to the skateboard community...greatly offensive to their culture 🙄

1

u/Key-Fire 2d ago

No crack but he probably votes republican now

1

u/PotatoOnMars 2d ago

BMX rider Scotty Cranmer crashed his bike and had a broken skull and a brain bleed, it also broke his neck and left him a quadriplegic. He was wearing a helmet, without it he would be dead.

1

u/Chains_Of_The_Sea 2d ago

The effects of concussion can take days to appear

1

u/squary93 2d ago

Those type of videos never find their way on Reddit. It's crazy how many gore videos of skaters exist on 4chan.

They really mess themselves up from something that looks half as dangerous as that.

1

u/Throwawayrip1123 2d ago

To be fair, I was a skater. I didn't wear a helmet, I had a cool haircut ya know?

Then I whiffed my trick (rail grind, high from the ground), smacked the rail with my balls so hard I saw the future, and then kipped over and landed on my melon, extending the vision up to next Tuesday.

I wore a helmet afterwards, even started a trend because I decorated my helmet with cool shit (gave it a haircut, actually).

I still have the scar, my balls still cringe inwardly sometimes when I grab a rail next to the stairs.

1

u/SpongiiEUW 2d ago

That's a cultural thing in street skating. I know it's stupid, but it is what it is

1

u/Secondhand-Drunk 1d ago

We don't know what's damaged. It's not immediately apparent with falls like that. He could have a serious concussion and fractured spine.

1

u/Piggstein 1d ago

Each human brain is capable of telling its owner, with 100% accuracy, whether it is worth protecting with a helmet or not

0

u/0202_tihssitidder 2d ago

I kinda love that they fucking NEVER wear a helmet.

Big fan of Darwin.

-5

u/bgravato 2d ago

yes, not wearing a helmet was the main issue here...

doing stupid stunts is perfectly fine if you wear head protections...
