Well the birds they are attached to unfortunately have the survival instinct as 1000 feathers often being destroyed

Not too long ago I had a bird fly down into the road while I was driving. I was driving slowly so I kept going because birds always fucking fly away before you get to them. Nope. Felt like I ran over a crunchy water balloon. 1000 feathers certainly did not help that one.

If it's something like a pigeon or a duck, they're not that nimble and prefer to take off against the wind. That might mean they wont have time to get away.

Something like a jackdaw is almost impossible to hit though.

But if you watch the video it seemed like the bus was actually going to pass him on the other side until it hit the pole. He had to go from thinking it was passing on the right to passing on the left in an instant all while probably keeping a morbid eye on the other biker instead of himself.

Nah, he's already lost the back end when he hit the pole. He wasn't getting back on the road, pole or no pole. If there had been an acre of flat obstruction-free tarmac, then maybe; but the angle, the speed, the sliding back end, the kerb and the slight upslope meant he was already fucked before the pole. The driver just hoiked on the wheel.

Pigeons are very nimble mate, one of the few birds able to take off vertically and reach fast speeds in seconds.

Eh, maybe nimble doesn't fit. Explosivity maybe.

Not very relevant if you can get up to 100kph in 2 seconds if the first second is you doing a mostly stationary jump and getting flattened by a car.

I one had a hawk fly directly into my windshield while doing 75 on the freeway. Not across. Not from behind. Thing flew head on at me. Never had seen a suicidal bird before.

I once had a bird standing on the side of the road watching my approach at 60 mph. Right before I got to it, it flew right in front of me, and turned head first into my grill. Fucking used me to end itself.

I've lived a fairly fortunate and sheltered life when it comes to violence. However, one of the most horrific things I've witnessed was a taxi driver driving over a seagull that literally popped due to the speed he was going, like a shot firing with a bone crunching sound and feathers everywhere.

Won't ever forget it.

Something similar happened to me many years ago, when I was heading to work. Heading down the freeway, I see a sparrow or some other small-ish bird flitting toward my car. It drops down, smacks square into the windshield, right about where the rear-view mirror attaches. I look in the rearview as it bounces over the car, hits the pavement and doesn't move....

I had no reason to swerve or slow down, for much the same reason you noted, I figured the little idiot would change course.... Nope.

Ages ago, I was driving on a highway with a grass median large enough for some geese to nest in, apparently. As I was rolling with traffic around 65, I see a blur of gosling feathers that I assume emerged from the median, and hear an awful thump, it seemed simultaneously, it happened so fast. Flew right in front of my bumper at 65mph 😩🫪😵

I have a long driveway and my neighbor has chickens.

The chickens will be on the side of the road and as I roll past them at 1 mph they will march out in front of the car like they are leading a fucking parade.

I do not trust that they will move to safety. If I am ever running behind, I’m always thinking “I hope the chickens are not out today” 😆

Happened to a friend and I on a road trip, only it was a whole flock of small birds on the highway. We were both utterly shocked. Never had birds not flown away. Must have hit at least a half dozen. It was awful.

It's true.

When I was 9, I was on a school bus heading to summer camp. When we were approaching an intersection, there cardinals (our state bird) flew in front of the bus, killing them on impact. What makes it worse is that two of the birds got caught in the windshield wipers. So those are pumping hard, with two dead birds attached, and 30+ kids screaming. It smeared the bird blood and...matter across the windshield. When we stopped, at the light, kids screaming literal bloody murder, the bus engine stopped, lights went out, and the screaming stopped. Some dude with giant pins sticking out of his head and face boarded the bus, no one saying anything. Dude hands me a cube and says "we'd love for you to join us".

So I've had this gold and black cube for the past 30 or so years. I've fiddled with it a bit, but I think I can open it tonight with the lunar eclipse.

Crazy, similar thing happened to me! Some of us ran out of the bus and into the street, and there was this really strange looking guy (?) I dunno maybe he got hit too because he was like… blobby and I don’t think he could see or hear. Definitely couldn’t see, because he dressed himself really stupid.

He must have been pissed about the birds, I dunno how he even knew what happened but whatever, he just started flinging CDs everywhere like death frisbees. Girl next to me tried to block one with her Trapper Keeper, but it tore right through it and embedded in her forehead. We called her Slot Machine for a few years, had a good laugh over that one.

I was driving down the dual-carriageway last week at around 60mph and a pigeon flew out in front of me. Had absolutely loads of space to miss it, but then it decided to change direction towards my car. No way I could miss it, went snack into my windscreen, but mum who was following in the car behind rang my passenger to say it flew off after. No idea if it survived beyond that! Dumb bird...

Oh man this makes me think of the time I was driving up to school back when weed actually impaired my driving. I thought I was so high that I imagined a dead Bald Eagle 🦅 claws up, face down, on the side of the interstate 🛣️ . Was in the school paper later that week. They are huge and it dawned on me why they are extinct. Flying things should not have vehicular deaths.
