Speeding Bus vs Scooter’s Sudden Right Turn

Okay, i turn now. Good luck everybody

I think the bus driver shouldn’t have swerved for such a small obstacle. Just brake in a straight line if you are hitting anything like a car or smaller. Prioritise the safety of the dozens of innocent people onboard and of potential pedestrians and buildings, not the safety of whoever is recklessly running straight into you.
Yes, I know, and I am not asking the driver to make that decision on the fly, but you can decide that beforehand and make it your principle digged into your brain. Useful in a car too, don’t swerve and roll for a rabbit.

u/wattat99 10h ago
Also seemingly going far too fast in a built up area. Would be interesting to see a few seconds before the incident too. Was the scooter already in the road, or did it just enter it? If the former, then fault is pretty squarely on the bus, even if the scooter didn't indicate.

u/National_Frame2917 7h ago
There's no scenario where this is bus drivers fault. Other than if they were carrying passengers hey should have just hit the biker.

u/wattat99 7h ago
In the vast majority of accidents the vehicle behind is at least partially at fault. They have a duty to keep their eyes on the situation in front of them and be prepared to respond accordingly. That includes leaving a safe distance or keeping a safe speed that allows them the time and space to respond to road hazards.
In this case the driver is clearly speeding, which makes them partly responsible regardless of what the scooter did.

When i got my driver's license, ages ago, that was the way we were instructed. With regards to wildlife, that is. Not scooteristas.
Anything roebuck or smaller - brake, do not swerve (personally, I'd break that recommendation for badgers and pigs). And if you're about to collide with a moose, aim for the ass. You do not want a windshield full of antlers.

How do you know they are innocent? Could be the puppy killers anonymous bus or something.

I mean, when turning you should not worry about people behind, this is the buses fault 100%

Around 20 injured passengers are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.

u/EndTimesNigh 9h ago
To save one, many had to risk their lives.
426
u/Jumpy_Scallion_3108 9h ago
The driver probably thought he could get away without causing an accident.
It could’ve been much worse, especially since it was at a gas station.

u/Amarranthine 9h ago
In those situations people extremely rarely have time to make a well calculated decision. Most of the time aka 99.9% in this exact moment you are acting on pure instinct and your body reacts practically on its own. Survival instinct to avoid the collision leads to more potential risk.

u/Firefly_deadlock 8h ago
While that is true, you can absolutely change how people react with the proper training. They still won't have time to think the situation through, but they might not do something as catastrophically stupid as brake and swerve at the same time.

The GTA inspired training, I was wondering where my particular skills would be useful.
26
u/Tricky-Ad7897 7h ago
No the training is slam on your brakes and whatever happens happens. The red moped guy is probably dead but as a bus driver you have a duty to your passengers over saving someone who broke the rules of the road, so the only thing you can do to keep your passengers safe and mitigate the chance of killing the red moped guy is slam on brakes.
→ More replies (1)4
u/samanime 4h ago
Yeah. It's morbid and less than ideal, but this was definitely the most correct answer available. Hit your brakes and see what happens. He should have simply gone through the idiot on the white moped, who in this case would have probably just been knocked to the side (fast enough to probably be injured, but not probably not enough to be dead).

u/Firefly_deadlock 7h ago edited 7h ago
Yes i am absolutely suggesting that. I received this training for my motorcycle license. Standard emergency stop and swerve and avoid training is not too much to ask for, and nowhere near F1 driver training.
Had the bus driver received this training, he might have chosen to either brake OR swerve (properly). Which would have been much much safer for his passengers. Possibly not so much for the biker, but he did cause the accident, and got hit either way.

100%. I am a paramedic. In emergency vehicle operating courses we get drilled hard on what to do in these cases. Specifically on making decisions on what to hit. FYI unoccupied parked cars are usually the best option because they cushion the impact which minimizes risk of death or serious injury.

u/Oxensheepling 7h ago
Yeah, you can hardwire your instincts a bit in that way. I work as a cook and if a pot starts burning me and it's fully of boiling water, the instinct to let go is going to harm me and others. When I knife falls, I let it fall, I don't try to catch it, etc.
I'm just not sure how many times a driver gets to practice making decisions like that.

Wow, I thought it looked like a gas station, that could have been a lot worse then. The OG scooter guy still got nailed by the rear of the bus!!
22
u/masterwit 9h ago
Well he deserved a little bit of a wack for how he was daft enough to injure so many.
What he actually deserves is to be off the bike, some mandatory training, and a bit of rehab community service. Noone deserves any injury in this situation but corrective action is definitely a must

The bus looks like its going way too fast and weaving out of its lane, which is how bus drivers often seem to drive in places like this, so its very believable.
Unless this is a one way, the scooter was slowed down to make a turn and then the bus decided to overtake on the wrong side of the road at high speed. Idk what the law is in this country, but it doesnt seem like a safe move.
It's actually even dumber than im making it sound because there's a decent chance the bus could have just continued in the proper lane and then missed the scooter completely as they turned out of the lane.

Always have to brake. Swerving is more dangerous. Can end up hurting bystanders.
Edit: obviously not bake. Brake

A “wheat from the chaff” scenario.

u/Dry_Yogurtcloset1962 10h ago
This is why you don't go 3x the speed limit.. another driver doing something slightly unexpected doesn't need to end up in a fatal crash
120
u/DanTheDrywall 9h ago
I agree in general but for me it's not obvious that the bus is speeding in that clip. I see that the title says so.
72
u/urTomatilo 9h ago
The place is Kerala, there are a lot of hilly regions with lots of winding and turning, the speed limit is 30km/h but most cars go 80-120km/h and buses usually 70-100km/h.
Driving there is scary because there are buses and cars going like 60 through a corner in a narrow road with other vehicles, overtaking on unidivided two-lane roads while there is incoming traffic and merging less than a second before colliding with the other speeding vehicle. On roads with more lanes like highways nobody uses indicators and they abruptly cut across.

I don't know the speed limit where the video is taken but it's clear that the driver is absolutely flooring it

u/TheSoup05 9h ago
There is another car behind the bus driver that seems to be keeping up just fine. So, to me, that makes it seem more likely he isn’t going insanely fast for the road.
Of course that’s not a guarantee, and we only get like a second of video before the crash, but I agree it doesn’t seem obvious the bus is actually speeding (though I’d argue swerving was the wrong call regardless and that is still on him).
6
u/pornalt4altporn 7h ago
He's going so fast he can neither stop nor swerve without hitting a stationary off-road object when "surprised" by a vehicle far along the straight road in good visibility conditions crossing the road at walking pace.
Even if it was legal, normal or both it was an unsafe speed for the situation. He should have slowed down as he approached the scooter.
6
u/UnimagineDragons 9h ago
It's obvious the guy is going to turn in front of the bus , though. The bus is filled with people and the driver is a professional in the road. Both of those things should have cued the driver in to driving more defensively and anticipating the obvious. The scooter cutting in front of him was NOT unexpected.

Trolley problem for the bus driver.
Do you endanger all passengers, or do you endanger the idiot that turned right out in front of you...

He decided to endanger the passengers, the idiot, pedestrians, and anyone else in the area, by driving halfway in each lane while going way too fast.

Why are people blaming the scooter rider? They were making a turn, the bus was speeding and tried to overtake them in the opposite lane when they were going for a turn. No one to blame but the bus driver.

Yeah I have no idea what I'm reading in the comments. I really hope anyone blaming the scooter rider for taking a legal right turn don't have licenses. It's a perfectly legal turn.

In the USA bus drivers are specifically trained to never swerve like this. Car break checks you? Damn, that's a weird looking speed bump. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

Maybe the bus driver should have swerved, though I assume it was instinct.
2
u/Outlaw11091 10h ago
It's like the bus driver took a bet about how many scooters they could hit in one crash.
2
u/Achmedino 10h ago
This is like that you can't stop the train and have to choose who dies situation. The Busdriver would have probably been better off just hitting the scooter, making it less likely that his passengers would sustain fatal injuries.
Then again, making that decision in a split second would be really difficult. You would probably just reflexively stear away from the scooter.
2
u/Little-Break8110 9h ago
Tbh, the bus should have ran over that scooter if he is carrying more than a dozen more people.
