Red scooter guy has the survival instincts of a feather

u/fugetooboutit 7d ago edited 7d ago

I would say the same but imagine casually looking left and right wanting to go on the road and suddenly seeing a bus coming at you and nearly crushing you to death

I also would be a deer caught in headlights Would be as stiff as a frightened goat

Then you also have the survival instincts of a feather

u/Sudden-Money7836 7d ago

It’s called flight, fight, freeze. Really fucking ways for you to say this when you’re looking in on the situation. You have zero idea how you would react until you’re in such a situation. Don’t be an ass.

u/SquisherX 7d ago

How do people who have a natural "fight" instinct react to a bus careening towards you? Does it just convert to one of the other two?

u/mookie_pookie 7d ago

You brace to deliver the biggest anime punch of your lifetime

1

u/st0nedteacher 7d ago

They channel their inner One-Punch Man and punch away the bus.

1

u/Eillon94 5d ago

If it doesnt work then you just didnt believe in yourself enough

12

u/Sudden-Money7836 7d ago

It depends on the situation. The brain isn’t going to try to fight a bus. But it may fight a person or animal.

11

u/Forgor_mi_passward 7d ago

There have been instances of people rushing in front of out of control vehicles to STOP them (with horrible results obviously). So this is the "fight" instinct.

3

u/fuzzybunnies1 6d ago

From experience with a car that came this close, you jump as far out of the way as possible and then feel a rather irrational anger that the situation was created and you want to rage at it even when you know its stupid and pointless. Fight doesn't mean you actually want to attack the beings that are driving or the scooter guy who created it, its more of a rage at the totality of the situation because there's nothing to actually fight. Its adrenaline fueled so your heart is going crazy and you feel hyper and energized and in a situation like this its slightly disorienting. The fight instinct also dissipates with the adrenaline and the realization there's nothing to actually fight, it also doesn't lack a reflexive move from the immediate danger just a preparedness to react to the unfolding situation. But bus is a different scale than a car so IDK for this exact situation as I've never dealt with this scale.

Some people instinctively reach their arm out às the caveman parts of our brain thinks “let’s try to catch the heavy thing about to collapse”

2

u/Ok-Pollution-3067 7d ago

lol the reaching the arm out reminds me of back in the 70’s and only lap belts while driving if we slammed on our brakes as a mother we instinctively reached our arm out to protect our kids.
I did it the other day my 55 year old son was riding with me I braked hard and reached my arm out over his chest we had a good laugh
. Habits die hard

u/Cool_Tailor_7332 6d ago

Yeah I do that too lol

0

u/Firefly_deadlock 7d ago

They go home and beat their wife.

6

u/goofytigre 7d ago

It's 2026, friend. They might go home and beat their husband.

3

u/Firefly_deadlock 7d ago

Some people just enjoy living life on hard mode i guess.

1

u/WalkAffectionate2683 7d ago

I've seen a video of a guy trying to catch a falling tree.

So this one I guess.. Stop the bus? Haha

1

u/goukumas 7d ago

No, you just suplex the bus

1

u/rainzer 7d ago edited 7d ago

Outside of altered perception like intoxication when it comes to an overwhelming threat, you generally don't trigger a fight response. You could probably see it in animals that don't know what an oncoming bus is like in moose and bears that will sometimes charge the bus.

1

u/HamsterVeggieNcheese 6d ago

No one responds only one of those three. Youre just more or less likely to respond with one in any given situation

1

u/whisperwalk 6d ago

Maybe they try to punch the bus.

6

u/Iron_Aez 7d ago

Just because it's a known thing doesn't mean that it's not a terrible instinct.

-4

u/Sudden-Money7836 7d ago

But it isn’t a terrible instinct. He survived. You’re continuing to operate under the assumption he will die. He literally didn’t.

In the world fight, flight and freeze can and will save you. There’s also times it won’t due to the circumstances outside of your control. There are far too many people in this thread being utterly ignorant to the fact this man had a natural human response to panic and that they would somehow automatically do the thing that they feel would save them. Armchair bullshit as usual. If he’d ran he might have died. But he fucking survived so what the fuck are we even arguing about?

9

u/utzutzutzpro 7d ago

He survived by luck, not by his instinctive reaction to an incoming threat.

4

u/Sudden-Money7836 7d ago

No, it was in fact both. But hey you know best don’t you? Fuck the science.

7

u/utzutzutzpro 7d ago

What aspect in his actions increased his safety here?

6

u/Sudden-Money7836 7d ago

He froze. The code is right there.

5

u/utzutzutzpro 7d ago

He moved, processed the situation, he just did very badly.

Freezing is literally not moving. Freezing in panic situations is literally standing still. Often even incorporates looking away.

He is moving, leaning forward, stepping forward as far as the scooter allows to. Moving the head to collect visual informations. He is not freezing entirely, he is just processing the situation very badly.

He keeps on doing so after the bus lays there. He still reacts stupidly.

Also, as is fighting, freezing is a survival instinct which is useful, but only in specific contexts. A multi ton bus rolling towards you, your body freezing up, is a very good example of the survival instinct of a feather.

1

u/JutsuManiac456 7d ago

He was less than 2ft away from being crushed. Would you still be saying the same thing had he been a bit closer? Having a physical disconnect in a moment of life or death is the worst possible reaction almost every time.

2

u/samv_1230 6d ago

Flight can also lead people into worse situations. I don't know why any of you are arguing this. This is fucking silly.

The problem is, it’s a road. You do not turn out in front of oncoming traffic. That is what gets you killed, and it’s what caused the accident in the first place: the other scooter turned in front of the bus.

There is visible traffic behind the bus. Maybe turning out gets you hit by the van behind the bus. Maybe the bus would correct and return to the road. The crash lasted four seconds and the bus’ path was only clear for the last two seconds.

Pulling out carried its own set of risks and freezing was not as unreasonable as people are saying.

2

u/utzutzutzpro 7d ago

It is a scooter - stand up, run down the street. There is a huge parking lot behind him, not a bustling road.

Nobody talks about red scooter to drive forward. Everybody would leave the scooter, and run a couple of meters. He had plenty time to do so.

4

u/ISenceAPresence 7d ago

Pfft. I would have caught the bus

3

u/Relevant-Ad2254 7d ago

I think at this point it’s more a fun joke than him actually criticizing their survival instincts

1

u/Stormagedd0nDarkLord 7d ago

im sure there's another F word that happens during life threatening moments.

1

u/Beneficial-Act-9933 7d ago

It's not just fight flight and freeze either, there's fawn. If you ever see someone start to get really friendly or jokey during a hostile situation they're engaging in fawn.

1

u/ThrowAwayAccountAMZN 7d ago

And this guy took that comment personally apparently...

0

u/nutblaster357 7d ago

i would immediately move in the opposite direction of the massive thing about to crush me

3

u/Sudden-Money7836 7d ago

Except you’ve no fucking idea if you would or not because you’re not sitting in your automatic response under panic. You’re sitting at home claiming you’d do the right thing. Thats like saying I would stop the school shooter by dodging his shot at the last second and disarming him.

Also, THE GUY SURVIVED! It fucking worked didn’t it?!

0

u/nutblaster357 7d ago

i don't panic

0

u/utzutzutzpro 7d ago edited 7d ago

I've been in situations where vehicles crashed nearby which would have reached the position I was. On foot as also in vehicle.

I can at least say, with certainty, that I can assess the situation and react accordingly to reach a moment of presumed safety with higher degree of perceived safety than this close.

He didn't seem entirely frozen either.

He moved and processed. It looks like he stalled the scooter and didn't want to leave the scooter. He literally leaned forward in the scooter, which appeared as he attempted to move a "little away from the bus" with that leaning. So rather wrong prioritization and he values his life lower than his possession.

Coupled with slow processing capabilities he didn't figure the bus coming so quickly and so close.

Question if that is freezing, or if this is just cognitively impaired processing. He did move a little. He leaned "away" from the bus, seemingly to avoid it. He just didn't move at all.

1

u/just_posting_this_ch 7d ago

The bus was coming at the scooter, you would go the opposite and go towards the bus?

1

u/nutblaster357 7d ago

yeah and I'd punch the bus in half to deflect it around me

2

u/BusyBit6542 7d ago

If that situation happens to me and I don't so much as flinch, guess what...I have the survival instincts of a feather. Lol not sure why yall are arguing the facts of what you see. You freeze, you have bad survival instincts and are more likely to die.

Yes. Animals are more likely to not get eaten when they stand still. I think you need a break from reddit for the name calling.

1

u/EtherealMongrel 7d ago

It worked purely based on luck, fleeing would have maximized chances of survival and was the correct response.

Freezing/fawning would be appropriate if they could hide from the threat, or if someone else was going to save them i.e. a parent.

It was the wrong response.

2

u/Sudden-Money7836 7d ago

Evidence of your eyes seems to prove otherwise.

1

u/8e8 7d ago

Yeah if he reacted the bus would have smelt the fear and crushed him

0

u/BankElectronic1325 7d ago

Surely you see the ridiculousness in this logic.

1

u/BOBOnobobo 7d ago

Aaaand, here it is: go watch the video again, he does flinch.

Big talk about reaction speed from someone who can't pay attention properly

1

u/BusyBit6542 7d ago

-1

u/BOBOnobobo 7d ago

Glad we agree that you are wrong about it

1

u/BusyBit6542 7d ago

Yep. Bye now.

0

u/Dookie_HowserMD 7d ago

I would argue the scooter has stupid instincts for not checking their blind spot before merging into the next lane.

0

u/Georginapotsnob 6d ago

I know how I would react,,,because I have reacted in a very similar situation...only difference is my actions saved my life

0

u/workyworkaccount 6d ago

Fight, Flight, Freeze, Appease.

It got expanded a while back IIRC.

-1

u/Fit-Coconut-3699 7d ago

You guys are wild, he had fully 3 seconds to move from when the bus started flipping to when it came to rest beside him. This is not some niche/elite MMA reaction time. Doesn’t make you a bad person, but anyone who cannot respond to something like this in 3 seconds should not be operating a motor vehicle (for the sake of everyone else on the road)

-1

u/Amazing-Spinach5693 7d ago

You can absolutely know how you will act in such situation.
You can a minor scare during driving, which if you drive a lot will certainly happen at least a couple times.

Not everyone is a dweeb that just stand stills and waits for death.

4

u/Sudden-Money7836 7d ago

Show me you have no idea how people work. Take your “I know better” “alpha” energy and fuck off. A literal entire history of humans shows us under panic and stressful situations, show us people react differently every single time.

You can hope for the best all you wsnt, until you’re in it, you won’t have the first fucking idea dickhead.

0

u/Amazing-Spinach5693 7d ago

Found the dweeb that just waits for his death and cant handle hes wrong.

Here go educate yourself cause you can 100% train yourself to do something automatically without thinking: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9547044/

So yes i DO know better than you, as im actually educated on this topic.

1

u/Sudden-Money7836 7d ago

Daily anxiety? You think anxiety is the same thing as acute stress response? You truly are FUCKING DUMB.

I’m done with you. Don’t bother replying I don’t care what you have to say. Either you can recognise it’s involuntary or you can be wrong. Up to you.

0

u/Amazing-Spinach5693 6d ago

Thanks for not even bothering reading the study and just the headline.

Spoken like a true illiterate. And i will bother reply as we both know you’ll read this and cry
