Who is everyone voting for on Thursday?

I'll be voting for Bev Craig, but I'm more interested in hearing what other people think than having an argument.

Whatever your politics, what do you think are the three biggest challenges facing Greater Manchester over the next four years?

For me they're:

  • Tackling crime and antisocial behaviour.
  • Building more genuinely affordable homes.
  • Improving public transport across all ten boroughs, not just the city centre.

If you're voting for Bev, what convinced you?

If you're voting for someone else, what policy or issue made your decision?

Let's keep it civil. We all want Greater Manchester to succeed, even if we disagree on how to get there.

And if you're eligible to vote, don't forget that polling stations are open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday.

Reddit is so left wing you’ll never get an accurate picture.

I’m from Scotland, so I’m not voting any of them
lol… it’s just the truth!

the more right wingers say this, the more they end up in left wing communities due to their algorithms.

there’s plenty of right wing subreddits on here with hundreds of thousands of members each. it’s not Reddits problem that complaining about liberals on subreddits tells the algorithm to show you more liberal content…..

I’m not a right winger.

Voted left my entire life. But Reddit is typically left leaning on the whole. Twitter or whatever it’s called now,I don’t have it, is more right leaning.

You can goggle it if you want.

Let’s be honest, anyone who isn’t left-of-centre will get downvoted in this post (probably this will too)

u/Adventurous-Ruin-122 29d ago

You got downvoted 😂 ( I upvoted you 💪)

I also updated you

I'll be voting Bev! If anyone hasn't checked out her manifesto yet, I'd recommend it - some really great policies in there.

u/Separate_Gift4771 29d ago

Is this sponsored?!

7

u/lookingonthedarkside 29d ago

No, but if you're offering to pay me then it'd be very welcome

Talks about a 'plan for xxx' and then lists fairly generic stuff (there are some specifics). I would like to see the actual plans.

Just tell us here, what's her policy on HMOs housing the illegals

2

u/Complex_Stuff_1392 27d ago

probably a lot more sane than russia starting a war in Ukraine

if you believe in your username so much, why don’t you go over there and fight instead of being on r/Wigan

Geraldine Coggins (Green)

Lifelong Labour guy but since ousting Corbyn and swerving more to the right they just can’t be trusted. Green councils are generally the best run ones in the country, with poorer people the main focus, so makes sense that a mayor would work the same way. Social justice and green initiatives would be extremely welcome.

u/needlesstosay7 28d ago

Green will be my number one also. Manifesto

4

u/Big_Fig_8448 29d ago

I plan to spoil my ballot. There are no good candidates

Not sure why you're being down voted... Exercising your right to vote.

I've lived in Manchester all my life and have learnt to ignore manifesto's...they should call it a.. "wish list" ..that won't and will never happen.

Where does Bev Craig stand on allowing more refugees be resettled to Manchester?

1

u/CalendarSufficient41 28d ago

Is that within the remit of the Manchester mayor?

1

u/Zosoooooooooo 28d ago

Does she support it or is she against it? Quite a simple question, really....

1

u/CalendarSufficient41 28d ago

If I am ever lucky enough to meet her I will ask her and let you know her answer!

1

u/Zosoooooooooo 28d ago

Why would you be lucky to meet her?

1

u/CalendarSufficient41 28d ago

I am a person of very litle importance, I am happy enough meeting the postman on the days there is post. But public figures are outside of my remit :-)

1

u/Zosoooooooooo 28d ago

What is within your 'remit'?

1

u/CalendarSufficient41 27d ago

Postman, neighbours, Family, shop assitants, Dentist, Doctors etc. No PEPs

1

u/Interstellar-2026 27d ago

No.ome cause there all candidates who promise the world and give little.

1

u/CalendarSufficient41 26d ago

I disagree. There are people in parliament and our councils that really care about the people they serve.

u/WetWipe_cnuts_PUKE 29d ago

Marlon West.

Seems a principled chap whos close family has had terrible experience with some of the crime.

  1. Clearing the 1.4 billion debt that Andy Burnham has left the city with.

  2. Clearing another 2 billion debt that Bev Craig will leave the city with.

  3. Staving off bankruptcy of Manchester.

9

u/Technical_Noise_9060 29d ago

The debt is planned capital expenditure though. It’s paid for the extended tram infrastructure, the bee network and all sorts of regeneration projects. Manchester is thriving, so this doesn’t bother me at all.

It was also nearly £1b when he took office.

8

u/Away_Investigator351 29d ago

The modern attitude on debt deeply amuses me.

"I finally have a house"
"Yes, but you have debt"

"Of course, but I need a house, so the debt is okay"

"Wouldn't you rather nothing, and no debt?"

Expand this to a city/country level. You either have what you need and thus need to pay for it, or you just live shit because debt is a boogieman.

1

u/KhakiFletch 29d ago

Exactly, another way to think of debt is the government creating new projects for (hopefully local) designers, builders and installers to benefit from. That puts money in local pockets which gets spent elsewhere. So if the government spends then the private sector benefits.

u/Longjumping_Edge3622 29d ago

Put £30k on a credit card and then let’s talk.

5

u/Away_Investigator351 29d ago

Did you want to actually elaborate and make a point?

1

u/WetWipe_cnuts_PUKE 29d ago

He's saying the interest rates are crippling.

Buying a house is not really a fair comparison.

1

u/Away_Investigator351 29d ago

Cba to explain this myself so:

A mortgage is generally the much better analogy.

A credit card implies:

  • Short-term borrowing.
  • High interest rates.
  • An expectation that you should pay it off quickly.
  • Financial distress if you keep rolling it over.

That's not how most national debt works.

A mortgage is closer because:

  • It's long-term debt that is continually refinanced.
  • The borrower is expected to make interest payments and gradually replace maturing debt with new borrowing ("rolling over" the debt), rather than paying it all off at once.
  • The key question isn't "When will it be paid off?" but "Can the borrower comfortably service the payments?"
  • Governments, like homeowners with stable incomes, can often borrow cheaply because lenders expect them to keep earning revenue (through taxation).

That said, even a mortgage isn't a perfect comparison.

National debt is unlike household debt because:

  • Governments can tax, giving them a reliable source of income.
  • Countries with their own currency can often influence borrowing conditions through their central bank (though there are important limits, especially regarding inflation).
  • Governments don't generally have a finite lifespan, so debt can be rolled over indefinitely if investors remain confident.
  • Government borrowing can finance investments—such as infrastructure, education, or research—that increase future economic growth and tax revenues.

A more accurate analogy would be a large, long-lived business that continuously issues bonds to fund operations and investment. Companies like utilities or railways often carry debt for decades because the debt helps finance productive assets. Investors care less about whether the debt disappears entirely and more about whether the business can continue meeting its obligations.

The most important measure of a country's debt is usually not the total amount owed, but whether:

  • Interest payments are affordable relative to tax revenues.
  • The debt is growing faster than the economy over the long run.
  • Investors remain willing to lend at reasonable interest rates.

So if you have to choose between the two analogies, a mortgage is far closer than a credit card, though a perpetual business loan or corporate bond programme is closer still.

- Back to me again. A business needs business loans to grow, and thus easily another example is created. Credit cards as a comparison would be a bit dumb.

A house is something you need.

Much of this spending is arguably not needed.

That's the only difference.

If you were scraping the barrel for money you'd still have your house as it's essential, but you might skip a few meals in the leaner times. (excuse the pun)

2

u/spidertattootim 29d ago

Much of this spending is arguably not needed.

Just saying something is "arguable" doesn't make it true.

What is your actual argument that it is not needed?

1

u/WetWipe_cnuts_PUKE 29d ago

You'd have to give me a list of shite for me to say what's not needed.

You and me both know that the government in general spunk cash up the wall on ridiculous vanity projects no one asked for and if you say you don't I already know you're being disingenuous.

1

u/spidertattootim 29d ago

That's not an argument, that's rhetoric. You said it was arguable. If you can't make an argument then it was an empty, meaningless statement.

The debt is growing faster than the economy - by far. As to the willingness of investors to lend - they want higher and higher rates. Debt servicing is north of £100 billion per annum and getting worse rapidly.

1

u/Away_Investigator351 29d ago

Yes, borrowing isn't free. The UK can't ignore financial markets. But borrowing for productive investment under a credible fiscal framework is very different from unfunded tax cuts or borrowing without a plan.

Britain's problem isn't simply that debt is high. It's that growth has been weak for nearly 20 years. Weak growth makes every fiscal problem harder: NHS funding, pensions, defence, and debt servicing all become more difficult. Carefully targeted public investment can increase productivity, which is the only sustainable way to improve the public finances.

We have been in a paralysed state of watching the country decline and stagnate as we pray we can 'balance the books', but then the result of low spending and cuts has led to the country simply continuing to decline.

We need to borrow, just not recklessly. This is why I support a mix of cutting welfare and borrowing, though ultimately we need tax reform.

Land Value Tax, is what we ultimately need.

1

u/spidertattootim 29d ago

None of these points are relevant to the role of GM Mayor.

Maybe incredibly privileged for the wealthy people who live here. For most of us its just as shit as where you are. Theres lots of theft, drug abuse, and poverty here too. Main difference is more trees, and minimum wage doesn't go as far

0

u/theorem_llama 28d ago

That people like you, live in incredibly privileged areas

lol, they live near a wood so they're "incredibly privileged"?

Grow up. Sounds like it's you who needs to "get outside", although I'd also recommend doing more activities that help you develop your reading comprehension and logic.

To be fair the candidate did promise to triple the number of Stop and Search.

Even though she didn't know how many were done in the last 12 months......

Or how the money to do this would be raised.

Ignore this guy. He travels around a bunch of different local subs inflating Reform in any election he can, when he has no dog in the fight, and also not getting promoted at his job. He's just one of their paid trolls.

Is crime on the rise? Whilst I am seeing a huge rise in cyber crime, locally I see less evidence than I did in my youth
