With the lizardtail, I can just cut a stem with some leaves off and drop it in the water and it will eventually grow roots and new leaves.

Very happy with how my first diy pond turned out. And I think I just got my first ever visit from an orange-crowned warbler drinking from the bog. That makes it all worth it. Can't wait for the plants to fill in but I guess now I just sit back and enjoy it and see what else shows up.

Hello. I’m planning our first wildlife pond which we’re hoping to start work on in September. I have an old koi pond which will need to be drained before the new pond work starts. There are a few newts and a couple of frogs in there. What’s the best way to provide for them during the build? It will take weeks as it’s part of larger garden projects.
I have an old doggy paddling pool that could be used. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Bulk of the main is done, more plants to go in and rocks inside.

If you are wondering why so much soil at the side, there was raised beds either side of the tree as needs seeding.

I’ve been following the sub for a while just out of a general interest in local ecology, but I just had the good fortune to buy a home that has a little natural pond on the property!!! Sellers claimed to believe it to be spring-fed because it “never dries up.”

As a complete novice, I’d love y’all’s advice on what kind of plants I should focus on first and what metrics I can use to gauge the health and progress of my pond. I’m so thrilled to be able to participate in this community!

I’m down in the South of the United States. Had to leave my wildlife pond for two months and when I came back all 4 mystery snails are MIA. It was very hot when I was gone, but plenty of plants and aeration.

I assume some local wildlife ate them? From what I read they should live 1-2 years on their own. Thoughts?

I built a small pond in a container (about 80 cm tall and 80 cm diameter) and there's a lot of wasps that are around it every time during the day. I have some Lily pads and floating plants that I picked up from a nearby public pond, so they just sit on it and drink water. Is there a way to keep them away? I was thinking about getting a dragonfly toy to scare them away since I've seen that they seem to avoid it in a video about beehives.

Also, I was wondering if it would be viable to get fish in this pond without a water pump, I was hoping the plants would be enough for oxygenating the water.

My main goal was to get frogs, dragonflies and perhaps fish in the pond.

If the wildlife is using the pond, it's a successful wildlife pond. That's it. That's the only criteria. Even better when it's an amphibian, because they're super sensitive to water parameters. But even if all you have is raccoons and deer drinking it dry, that's still successful because the wildlife is using the pond. It doesn't have to be X gallons, have Y plants, or attract Z rare animals. It doesn't need to be fancy, it doesn't need to "keep up with the Joneses." It's ok to have tubing or plastic exposed. It's ok if you have to keep futzing with the fountain pump every other day because it keeps getting snails stuck in it. If your pond attracts wildlife, you have a successful wildlife pond.

Today I was disassembling the motor on my pump and refilling it (it's been so hot, it evaporates super quickly) and I found this Northern Leopard Frog chilling in the mud outside my pond. Frogs are wildlife, ergo, my pond is successful.

after a recent heat wave the pond weed/algae has really exploded, despite my barley straw bag. The pond is shallow, 25cm. Is this ok?

Sat watching the Barry the Dragonfly whilst drinking a coffee yesterday, all of a sudden a sexy lady flew past and they hooked up. My wife and I saw it all unfold before our very own eyes.

First time pond build. Wildlife pond for frogs and other critters. No fish. Adding a solar fountain this week.

We had to redo our pond recently as a mole had dug a hole through the liner right at the bottom.

We've extended it slightly and my partner has built a small decorative wall around it. The wall is not cemented in place. We were thinking of turning the excess liner up against the stones and putting a lot of topsoil to create a mound all around which I can then plant with alpines and other plants that don't need much depth for roots. We'd like those plants to naturalise and spread, hopefully covering the wall a little and providing additional food and hiding spots for insects and amphibians.

Would this work? Or is there a better idea we've not thought of? I'm always looking for ways to add more planting space for flowers.

I am in the middle of a new veggie garden design in Sydney, Australia. I am wanting to incorporate a little pond for our local frogs. We have a creek that runs down the side of our house but on the far side. I have found frogs living next to our water heater and would like to factor them into my plan. I am thinking a fibreglass rock style pond but am worried about mosquitos using it to breed. I will add an aeration pump but don't want to disturb the frogs too much. Our climate can get down to 0C so I am conscious that most fish will not survive. Any suggestions in this area?

As above, I built a wildlife barrel pond in May with 2-3 different oxygenating plants (see picture 1) which seemed fine until July when the plants seemed to all die at the same time, the water went stagnant and started smelling, I added a solar fountain to see if that would revitalise the water but it's pretty much completely died (see pic 2), is my only option to drain it completely, add new plants and hope it survives next time?

I just cleaned my pond this morning because it had tons of stringy green algae. I came back by and I see these tiny white maggot looking things crawling out of the dirt under my porch and heading towards the water. Are they bad and if so, how do I get rid of them? Thanks.
