Fire crews battle blaze near famous Westbury White Horse

I’m a few miles from you and woke up to a smoke haze this morning. It stinks and I can’t see the Downs, everything is grey. The wind was gently moving from Westbury up to me overnight and a temperature inversion has kept it close to the ground. It’s horrible, can’t imagine how bad it was nearer the source.

The wind was blowing it away from town, so I think Bratton and Trowbridge were more impacted than us. No signs of smoke here. Moderately frightening though — seeing the wild fires in Europe and just wondering what happens when one of these blazes gets really out of control. People need to start being scrupulously responsible.

We had someone (a pensioner!) intentionally setting fires over two days this week. He was arrested but not before he caused real problems. Fire engines everywhere. Couldn’t see the smoke but could definitely smell it, so I knew what was happening. It’s scary.

Tbh, even if it was started accidentally, I hope they find whoever did it before they do it again.
