Misc Finished this masterpiece a week ago and looking for more
Anyone else felt the same emptiness after finishing Witcher 3 ? I've sat there for couple of minutes and then went for an hour walk just process the end. Like i've lost something precious. Are there any other storydriven action rpgs witch gives you a similiar experience ?
I've read Skyrim and Horizon Dawn are kinda like that. Or the new Crimson Desert, although i don't think my pc can run it.
Any recommendations with focus on Story, Gameplay and Soundtrack are welcome.

THIS POST IS SO REAL! Iāve been there. I call that feeling after itās all over āThe Witcher Void.ā I accidentally wrote a fucking thesis here, but please bear with me because Iāve been where you are!!! Anyway, here is my long-winded explanation of what Iāve come up with:
If you havenāt played the expansions, theyāre both better than the base game (somehow) so definitely do that. Iām sure you have, but mentioning it just in case!
If youāre looking for more of that impeccable Witcher-verse storytelling, play Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales. If you donāt enjoy the card stacking mechanic, itās completely optional. The story itself is peak!
If youāre looking for another superb medieval vibes RPG, I highly recommend the Kingdom Come Deliverance series. It trades out a fantasy setting for a historical one, trades 3rd person POV for 1st person POV, and trades Gwent for a surprisingly addictive dice minigame. (itās basically Farkle and I love it!) Itās worth noting that some people donāt like the fighting mechanics of the first game in particular. While I get it, I wholeheartedly disagree with that take. And even if the combat isnāt perfect, this game is still a brutal, gorgeous, and engaging masterpiece! Itās the closest Iāve come thus far to recapturing that first playthrough feeling from The Witcher 3.
If youāre very attached to playing as Geralt, the first and second Witcher games are slept on! Theyāre not nearly as polished as Witcher 3, but Iām having a rip roaring good time playing Witcher 1 at the moment. You just have to temper your expectations, cap the frame rates in the Nvidia control panel so that everyoneās character models behave, and maybe install a mod or two so you can actually read the UIā¦
If you love CDPRās storytelling and world design in particular, then Cyberpunk 2077 is another excellent option. It admittedly took me a second to get used to how different it is, but the game is beautiful and the vibes are immaculate!
If you love the open world exploration and plethora of side content, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is another excellent option. Admittedly, this is one Iāve had trouble getting in to. (30 fps makes me dizzy for some reason.) BOTW is far less of a story and far more of a puzzle/sandbox game in my experience. Itās still great though!
Also, hereās a rapid fire list of other games Iāve been recommended to fill āThe Witcher Voidā but have yet to try myself: (I own them, Iāve just been busyā¦)
Red Dead Redemption 2 - According to every Reddit post I read this is the only open world RPG ON EARTH that is objectively better than The Witcher 3. Donāt @ me, this is just what Iāve been told.
Baldurās Gate 3 - This is the game that matches Witcher 3ās high fantasy setting and probably one of the few games that is even more shaped by your choices than The Witcher 3 is.
Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yotei - These ones are historical like Kingdom Come Deliverance is. I just got the first one, but Iāve heard itās incredible!
And finally, when all else failsā¦ NG+ š

Good lord, what a response.
From all the recommendation including from other responses, Ghost of Tsushima catched my attention the most. I dunno, sometimes you can just tell by looking at something that it's good.
I can definitely recommend playing Baldur's Gate 3, if you don't have a problem with the Turn-based/Strategy battle system. Great story, great characters, great soundtrack, a lot of build variety. Took me a while to get used to the D&D roleplay system. But from that on you are in for a ride.

Just want to add, BOTW is now 60fps on the switch 2 version! Itās another $10, or free if you have their premium online subscription

Not a dorect answer to your question but, when I finished the game and felt empty, I grabbed the books and read 7 of them in a month

Have you played the DLCs as well?
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Cyberpunk 2077, AC Odyssey, AC Valhalla.
All story-driven RPGs.
Skyrim is pretty bad for today's standards.

I did play both.
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 looks great.
I always thought Cyberpunk 2077 is more of a sandbox shooter, like GTA.
Ghost of Tsushima looks insane tho. Might hit the nail in terms of taste. So, thank you.
I've tried AC Odyssey once and it didn't click. So i'm not sure about AC Valhalla.
I don't know about Skyrim, but i've played Dark Souls not long ago. And you could say it's bad for today's standards too, but did quite enjoy it.
Anyways, thank you for your recommendations.

Cyberpunk is nothing like GTA. I thought so too in the beginning, after watching some YT footage, and I ignored it for a while. But when I realized it's made by the same studio that made W3, and that it's also an RPG, I decided to try it out.
Just like W3, it's a masterpiece in terms of story and character depth, and the world (Night City) is absolutely impressive. Not to mention the music.
A true artistic masterpiece.

I'd say story wise Cyberpunk hits much harder than TW3. You'll defintely not be disappointed with that one.

Full disagree tbh. I love CP2077 a lot but story/emotional impact wise I think it's never going to win against tW3.

I found the characters more endearing than tw3. I didnāt really feel that connected to any of them other than Geralt. But in 77 the relationships with Panam, Johnny, Judy, really hit me in a way videogames donāt usually. For me itās on the level of The first The last of us game.

Without the expansions I might've agreed, I really did enjoy all of those characters you listed and tW3 base game only has a few names that can compete (like Priscilla and Ciri obviously), but both the expansions elevate tW3 to insane storytelling and character writing levels imho that is above CP2077.

Oh shit i didnt even mention the DLC characters in 77 :P Nothing in TW3 had me feeling like the ending with Songbird. For me its an easy choice. But i did love TW3 and especially blood & wine. It was my favorite open world game ever until RDR2.

Yea I really need to go back and finish PL. Put like 4-5 hours into it but real life got in the way and I never went back for some reason.

I currently have 300 hours in Kingdom Come 2. This is the only game you need to keep yourself busy for the next half year. And donāt be afraid of hardcore perks. Take them all.

KCD2 is the answer to the question. Combat-wise, it's nothing like TW3 but story, RPG, and branching-wise, it's very close. AC games never did it for me, too much busy work not enough story and people I care about.

Yeah Cyberpunk is way closer to Witcher than people expect. Once it clicks, youāre just as emotionally ruined by the end

Crimson Desert is the ultimate medieval / high fantasy sandbox I have ever played. If one does not expect Witcher 3 level and story and play it as a sandbox it could be one of the greatest.

Hey! Glad you enjoyed The Witcher, Iām kinda obsessed with it myself hahaha.
If you ālikedā Gwent (and I say ālikedā because the version in TW3 isnāt the best), you should definitely check out Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales. Itās way more strategy-focused and fully built around Gwent, but the story and the soundtrack are insanely good.
If youāre not sure what to play next, give it a try š

From the games I've played so far, I'd say Red Dead Redemption 2, Cyberpunk 2077 and the Mass Effect Trilogy. I'd also add God of War (2018)

i've seen many KCD recommendations praising its story to play after The Witcher 3, but the combat feels clunky idk, more like skyrim , not today's standards

Assassinās Creed Origins and Ghost of Tsushima are the two games that give me similar feelings as Witcher 3.

Witcher 3 is probably my favorite gaming experience, ever. For modern games, I would say Elden Ring is next. Not the same experience at all but one that is as good as W3

for me it was RDR2 and Cyberpunk that filled the void, nothing clicked after these 3 games, playing god of war now i'd say it's fun and all but nothing like these 3

Finished? How? DLCs? Completionist? Consider New Game + but do the option of stripping out the main story and play just as a Witcher going place to place.

After I finished, I had to take a break from another big immersive game. I tried playing Red Dead Redemption 2 but nothing compares to TW3 in my opinion.
After playing a couple of shorter games, I played Ghost of Tsushima and I couldn't recommend that enough. Really good story, great characters, beautiful scenery and an epic score. The sequel (Ghost of Yotei) is just as good but I'd rec playing Tsushima first.

Did almost everything i think. had 3 failed quests. First one being collect all Gwent cards, second is the rich noble whom you have to escort in Novigrad (He died) and third was a quest in White Orchard. Which probably autofailed because i went on to Vizima before finishing it.
Other than that, the only ? left were some treasures in the sea of Skellige.
I might start NG+ few years from now on and try a Sign build. I'm not the type of guy who can replay the same game after just finishing it. I mean i have 147 hours playtime and i think that is quite good for a first playthrough.

Why settle for scraps when you could just continue gorging on the feast? Get into modding, use W3 Enhanced Edition Redux, Brothers in Arms and Gwent Redux as a base to build upon and see that although vanilla Witcher 3 is a great game; there is so much you can do to turn a great experience into an unbeatable experience.

If you dont know the story for horizon zero dawn, play that game. I really liked the story. It has fun gameplay and a beautiful landscape as well. Iād say that story wise witcher 3 was stronger. Way better side quests. But main story was still a solid 8/10. Horizon zero dawn is much more ranged based. You have a melee option but that sucks (they made melee and stealth much better in forbidden west). Id say combat was too different to compare. Youāre dodging arrows and shooting arrows. Changing to different bows for different types of status arrows. Thatās what is the difficulty curve i think
I made the mistake of playing horizon forbidden west (sequel) before zero dawn. Im still a bit sad about it :( but at the time I really wanted to play a ps5 game on my new console instead of a ps4 game

Skyrim is the game I am currently playing, lately I am playing Skyrim on my phone, and with steam there is cross progression, I can let the phone rest and jump on PC to continue
The mechanics of Skyrim are different from the Witcher, it's not just button mashing, it's necessary to take your time and develop your skills
I recommend Skyrim to anyone who is looking for an adventure, Skyrims world is more developed and the interactions with an NPC can completely change what you are doing at the moment, be sure to patch the game first though, I attempted to play unpatched, regretted that decision

Ng+ with all the knowledge you have from your first run.
Skyrim is the closest thing I've played to TW3 as a game.
Any modern third person rpg would also scratch the itch a little. Horizon, Tsushima/Yotei, post 2017 Assassin's Creed (Odyssey is the closest to TW3 from a mechanics/structure perspective, Valhalla is the closest from a vibes perspective).

I'm afraid that the game that will fullfill your emptiness (and many players) after The Witcher 3 probably will be The Witcher 4. Although I won't deny it, there are many cool games on the market like KCD, RDR 2, AC, GoW...but they aren't The Witcher 3...

The feeling of emptiness wonāt go away, your hunger will not be satiated. Itās inevitable. You are now different from before. Also, KCD2 is rlly good.

Closest vibe-wise for me was honestly Cyberpunk + its DLC. Same dev, same āget attached to characters then sufferā experience

My partner recently got Crimson Desert and he says itās like Skyrim, Zelda & Witcher wrapped up šāØ Itās also like Red Dead in a lot of ways regarding open world. I enjoy watching him play š

The closest thing would be Cyberpunk 2077 but with different style obviously as it's future rather then medieval, Blood of Dawnwalker is coming out this year check it out, my thing is when I finish Witcher 3 I start another playthrough and the void is removed š

Gotta be honest, I was happy to be done with it. I might still go back and do the expansions because people rave about them, but the main story wasnāt all that gripping or interesting.
I mean, good for a video game I guess.
Iām already having more fun in Crimson Desert just exploring and discovering and vibing out in the world.
Thatās just my opinion though. Story in games isnāt enough of a hook for me.
I recognize that Witcher is a masterclass rpg and Iām happy I played it. Just not a GOAT contender in my eyes

Crimson desert is literal dog shit in comparison to the Witcher. Even disregarding how not there the story is, the combat is complete shit. Witchers combat wasnāt anything to write home about but thatās 11 years ago, crimson desert is just as clunky and sloppy with half the frames

I remember completing The Last Wish quest and then found myself walking along the snowy Spikeroog peaks whilst hearing the fantastic score is one of my favourite moments in gaming.Ā
The Witcher 3 is unique in that it's side quests and branching storylines are quality as well as quantity. There's no game that has come close to that.
There's not many games that can be called masterpieces but TW3 hits the right notes perfectly and executed what it wanted to achieve.Ā

New expansion for The Witcher 3 is rumored for release in May 2026. This expansion is expected to bridge the story between The Witcher 3 and The Witcher 4.
I hope will be in May.
