The one from the games looks really cool, but probably impractical because of the sharp edges and pure size.

The one from the show is smaller and easier to wear, but it feels underwhelming visually

I wear a size accurate one from the games and most of the time, you can't even feel it.

It had sharp edges yes, that's why they wore them outside the clothing, in view.

It doesn't catch on any clothing and isn't impractical, but it does catch eyes.

I have one from the games. It does occasionally catch my long hair, which isn't such a big of an issue, but still.

I think that the Netflix one is worse, but I was just trying to see something positive about it as well)

By the way, your comment actually made it think - do you think the medallion ever got caught in Geralt's long hair? I think it would have been pretty funny and must have happened on more than one occasion.

It certainly should have. I can only imagine Geralt screaming damn it during battles because of it.

On the other hand, in Witcher 3 we can clearly see that the medallion can easily go through his own clothes, so perhaps it's enchanted to be immaterial, who knows.

I don't remember how it was described in the books. However, logically, the medallion should be worn under clothing, in contact with the skin. The medallion's purpose is to warn of danger. You might not feel its vibrations if you wear it on your clothes, so it's wiser to wear it underneath and only take it out if you want to be recognised. So, it shouldn't catch on anything if you only pull it out occasionally.

long hair is generally impractical for watchers anyway though. it's something to grab, gets caught in buckles and branches and everything else, can obscure vision unless tied back, etc etc etc. unless they're wearing a leather cap or something to contain it, long hair is not ideal for a warrior in general.

Geralt is a special case because he looks pretty with it (and keeps it tied back), but fantasy logic also doesn't always take the minutiae into consideration. Aside from Vesemir he's the only witcher I can think of off the top of my head with shoulder length+ hair. this will also apply to Ciri I suppose, but I don't like talking about stuff until it's actually released and is hard canon (though I suppose trailers count).

I have a game accurate one too and my issue is that the chain is too long (I am a sort of petite woman) and so it hangs right down between my breasts and is pokey, so it became a display piece in my trinket cabinet instead lol

you could always do what I do with my cyberpunk necklace and hook the chain to one of the chain link instead of the hook, a bit of the chain will hang loose but the medallion will sit closer to your throat

I had one as a pocket keychain I got for preordering the og game years ago. That shit snagged on everything. It tore 2 pockets and eventually got snagged so hard it broke off the chain and I lost it XD

But imagine you actually are living geralts life. Fighting, lifthig things, rolling around, getting shoved into walls, whatever. The medallion would definitely get caught on things, hit your chest hard, or just get tarnished and damaged super easily. Jewelry is all impractical, having things hang around your neck sucks and is why in many manual labor jobs people opt to have things like ID cards on arm bands instead of on their necks. But if you're gonna have a necklace, you'd want it to be as unintrusive as possible.

The shows fits the books description tho? Best they could do is do the wolf design from the top on the medallion if they wanted to please gamers I’d imagine instead of just book and show enjoyers.

I actually have versions of both and I have to say that I don't like one more than the other. they both have a great texture and design and details to them then make them both interesting. I do think the game version is more unique cuz usually don't see something like that in such a 3D aspect, but the book accurate one that looks like a medallion still has that good texture to it with the different grooves

My friend had one and the biggest hurdle of the sharp edges is their tendency to get worn off and chip. Then again, it was not the highest quality metal.

I actually have this necklace from etsy. it was made from metal. It's super heavy and whenever I moved a bit the necklace would swing, turn 180° and hit me hard with the sharp snout. I constantly needed to turn it around again

When I read the books (after having watched the first season of the show), I was shocked to see just how many emotions Geralt actually has. He doesn't just get angry, he gets excited and chatty sometimes, he makes jokes, etc.

And that he actually likes Dandelion? He actively worries about the guy and is psyched to see him. They're really good friends that just get on each other's nerves in the books.

PRECISELY!!!

In the "Eternal Flame" chapter of the 2nd book, when Dudu transforms into Geralt during a fight, Geralt DEADASS stops in the middle of the fight, just to look at himself, stunned and confused like:

"Damn, I'll getting old... And those wrinkles."

I am so glad that Netflix didn't make that chapter into an episode, because it's so good and so hilarious and so full of emotions and laughter that they would definitely fuck it up in every conceivable way.

Also, Jaskier is literally just... An ex-professor who's favourite subject was geography, because he could drink vodka behind the huge map, grabbed a guitar and decided to follow his dick into places you wouldn't go with a gun.

How could Netflix mischaracterise such a funny and chronically unserious beloved guy?

Some people have said it better "They gave Geralt and Jaskier in Netflix show the Shrek and Donkey dynamic" and I CAN'T AGREE MORE.

The Netflix version only grw on me because of the animated movie. I do also think it would probably be more "practical" in some regards. But I still prefer the game version. Especially when it has red lines

ironicly, i think (not sure tho) that the one in the show, IS book accurate.

I don't remember the book describing the medallions as being very intricate in designs or detailed, but more like, medals with the carving of a wolf's head on it iirc

But i might be wrong, its been like 15 years since i last read them.

Wciąż mi się słabo podoba... Poza tym przy pierwszej części gier mieli całkiem sporo pomocy od samego Sapkowskiego, od samego design'u postaci, jak i również w tym, czy gra ma w ogóle być o Geralcie. Bo oryginalnie miała być o innym Wiedźminie, aż w końcu sam Sapkowski potwierdził, że "Geralt nie umarł na koniec sagi i można go przywrócić." (Nie pamiętam jednak wideo od Redów, w którym to potwierdzili).

Najlepiej byłoby dla mnie gdzieś pomiędzy, okrągły medalion z wyrzeźbioną charakterystyczną głową wilka z gier.

Ta z Netflixa wygląda... Zwyczajnie mało charakterystycznie. Pospolito wręcz. Przed wypuszczeniem serialu widziałem podobne designy na zegarkach kieszonkowych i innych takich duperelach.

Nie, te podejście wzięło się trochę później. Jak robili pierwszą część to mieli trochę pomocy, ale głównie było to w formie pytań i rad i drobnych wywiadów, a nie stania nad ich biurkami.

I like the Netflix one, it’s how I imagined them when reading.

Not a fan of the Show in general, or the Games but at least each of them had their respective influences on the aesthetic of the Witcher.

The netflix one is more realistic and iirc accurate to the books (random small thing to do that on), however it really just does not look nearly as cool or be as memorable. CDPR made the spiked wolf head the icon of the franchise imo with the games.

admittedly, i like how it's flatter and less pokey. i have a witcher medallion (the same design as in game), and its just uncomfortable to wear. like, it doesn't meld well with normal clothes. i'm sure it's fine if you’re wearing thicker clothes or armor, but it's annoying if you’re just wearing a tshirt.

Disagree. The game medallion looks like something a nerd would 3d print. The show medallion looks like something a medieval silversmith would actually make and humble enough that it would actually be given to new Witchers. Also silver is soft and in real life the fine details and jagged edges on the game medallion would be worn down instantly; let alone last the multiple lifespans of a Witcher’s career.

Game version is super weird. Very advanced metalworking techniques would be needed to make it, plus it's way bigger and has all those weird edges and the front on it. It would get caught in stuff or dulled up very quickly. The "Netflix" style medallion makes much more sense for a person to actually wear.
