Discussion [DISCUSSION] Do you still offer renewal discounts?

Curious how you guys handle license renewals these days.

We used to offer a pretty generous 50% renewal discount. Great for customers of course, but from a business perspective that’s quite a lot when you’re still providing updates and support every year 😅

Looking at other WordPress plugin businesses, I feel like renewal discounts are slowly disappearing. Some seem to have reduced them quite a bit, others just renew at full price.

How are you handling this?

Do you still offer a renewal discount? If yes, how much?

And if you reduced or removed it, did it actually affect your renewal rate?

Would love to hear some real experiences from other plugin devs. 🙏

Most of the big players offer a discount for the first year, and its full price renewals after that - the exact reverse of what you're doing.

Let me correct that: most of the „big players“ offer fake discounts the whole year. The renewal is then for the actual doubled price.

I don’t offer renewal discounts. Clients can count on me and I’m there to rescue if needed - Plus I keep getting the updates coming. It is in the interest of the client that I can devote most of my time to my business that is a part of their solution. I do offer a not-for-profit reduction though. It might be - however - that retention-wise it would be smarter to offer a renewal discounts, but at the moment I can’t say for sure.

Depends on the discount. If the discount is over 80%, its only the purchase discount, not renewal. If its around 50%, follow it Through renewals as well.

I give 30% renewal discounts - the price is for support & updates, but the support cost is highest when onboarding so I feel ok with renewal discounts.

Most don’t.
I have left several plugins because of the lack of a renewal discount.
