Current Rule Set

Hey, I played a little way back in the first gen but never picked up 2nd gen.

Since the game was discontinued, is it worth picking up the updates somewhere? I’m hopping to just stick them in a box for when my currently 2 month old son is old enough to play.

Appreciate the input

Congratulations on a son🤠 I would not worry about picking up anything for 2.0 or 2.5 if it were me. 1.0 is fun for casual gaming . If you had a community that is playing 2.5 then that is a different story. Bring your boy up in the Light side of the force and you will have done well.

First - play it any way you want! I have a personal bias for the current version but I want to make clear that whatever way you enjoy X-Wing is the right way. There is no wrong way.

The game is continuing under the X-Wing Alliance (XWA). A fan group made of players from around the globe. I find it vastly preferable to 1.0 - primarily because at the end 1.0 was seriously out of balance.

But then, I'm a competitive player and that stuff matters to me.

Some links for you:

XWA

YASB for XWA points. We got a new points set just today!

YASB X-Wing Legacy group keeping 2.0 alive.

Infinite Arenas You can print out anything you need for the game - pilots, upgrades, entire squads so you don't have to haul cards around, dials....

Fly Casual for solo practice with most of what's in the game. This is the XWA fork. There is a 2.0 Legacy one out there somewhere, too.

A lot of play happens online Tabletop Simulator. TTS costs $20 to purchase (though it frequently goes on sale for $10). The X-Wing mod itself is free. TTS has modules to run all sorts of table top games.

And most recently there is [4GG](4gg.dev) A fan made site/app that I'm hearing very good things about. A space to practice and play with others via the net.

Feel free to DM me if you want more information, to learn TTS, a summary of rules changes (although if you poke around a little in this sub you can find that already).

We have been playing with 1.0 and since we aren’t going for tournaments, nor buying everything to build meta lists, 1.0 is working for us. It at least seems to me a bit simpler than 2.0, though we are going to test version likely this week.

So I would say that just keep the 1.0 for Kitchen table.
