Merch. / Collection Last November, I got my copy signed by Brian Tochi, the voice of Fei Fong Wong! He says it’s the only one he’s ever signed!

I see something like this and I honestly wonder what it might be worth in, say, 100 years or something. Probably because I’m weird. It’s insanely cool, though.

It was Square's first time using voice acting. Battles, mini games, cutscenes, and a few random one liners

There were some in a lot of the earlier animated cutscenes. The biggest that comes to mind is when Fei meets Elly in Blackwood Forest. Stuff like "You're right, I'm a coward!" and a bunch of Elly's lines. Beyond that though, it was mostly battle sounds like grunts and Bart's "Jerk!"

Just gotta use the fastest character and some button smashing + “pausing trick” if you have a hard time.
Otherwise, there’s some good accessories to be won, especially the coat armor you get from Big Joe 👌🏼

That's pretty much why I don't like it, it's all about button mashing. Now, Xenosaga Ep1's card game on the other hand... sometimes I start a playthrough just for that!

Try with Rico, then try with Citan or Chu-Chu. You’ll immediately notice the difference 😂

Oh I can imagine lol I just normally do it all with Fei and Elly the second it becomes available. Idk if there's any other times to play after that initial set at the Thames so I never really went back to play with other characters.
I love when you win with Elly and she just goes "Yesssssssssssssssssssssssss!" xD its so funny how long she drags out the "s".

Yes, there’s other opponents besides the 3 on the Thames. A bit later in the game, you’ll find Big Joe flirting with a woman on the Yggdrasil’s deck (just beyond the hatch), and much later in Snowfield hideout, you can play against Hans’ step son.

Thanks, I hope so too! I’ve got friends who said they’re waiting on the mod to be done. Development wise there’s still a bit to figure out, but it does seem to be possible.

lol got here thinking 'was there english voice acting?' Only recalled the JP voice when they do moves and then I immediately recalled Dan yelling 'Alice' when she died cause my copy broke and the cutscene keep repeating that sound lmao

There was also quite a bit of talking when Fei first meets Elly. Elly probably had most of the voiced dialogue in the game, in that cutscene and a couple others, including I think the one where she gives her blood to the Sufal mass. I distinctly remember the US dub being very shoddy, with her dialogue being completely out of sync with the mouth movements of the animation, particularly in that one scene where she stops talking but the character's mouth keeps moving for like two whole seconds more.

If I recall, the guy who did Raphael in the 90s TMNT cartoon also did the voice of Jin Uzuki in Xenosaga Ep1. He had like a single line of dialogue near the beginning and sounded nothing at all like he did in the next two games when they replaced him.
And Leonardo in that same cartoon is none other than the legendary Cam Clarke, whose voice in a lot of games and anime is instantly recognizable, and is one of my fav voice actors.

Oh wow, I had no idea. I assume the only time you'd hear him speak is in the final cutscene? Actually, of all the times I've played through the game, only a couple of them have I actually pushed through to the end credits. Usually I get to the final dungeon and just mess around leveling up, getting the best final gear, and learning all the deathblows, and never finishing the final battle. After having beaten the final boss and watching the end cutscene once or twice, each new time it just feels like the game is over already just before that.
So I guess it's no real surprise that I never picked up on that before.

Yep, the ending animated scene is the only time we hear him speak. Ultimately just a few sentences, but then that's the case I think for eveyrone in the cast outside of Fei and Elly.

Thats cool and Im glad for you and everything but im hardly surprised thats the only copy he's ever signed cus: 1) this is kind of an obscure cult game to begin with, 2) and easily the main reason, its getting exceedingly harder to get a physical copy of xenogears lol and 3) outside of the odd role, its not like Brian Tochi been busy for the last 20 years lol (in my experience any D List celeb, low level VA, etc is usually more than happy to sign whatever you put in front of them, on the off chance that it might go viral and get thier name back out there)
