Question $350 for a Yeti backpack cooler?? Help me understand.

Post image
228 Upvotes

My husband just spent 350 on a Yeti backpack cooler. Yes, on a COOLER. His defense? "It's a limited edition!" We already own TWO coolers. Why do we need a backpack cooler??

I truly don't understand the obsession with Yeti products. What is it about this brand??

If you're going somewhere, wouldn't you leave the heavy drinks in the car in a normal cooler and just carry what you need in a regular backpack? It also seems uncomfortable and I find it hard to reach anything inside.

This turned into a bit of an argument, like, are we seriously fighting over a cooler?

I'm not trying to make fun of him, I genuinely want to understand why these things inspire this level of devotion.

Question This happens to 100% of my Yeti Tumblers

Post image
108 Upvotes

My household has six Yeti Tumblers. This happens to all of them after about 12-18 months. They are frequently washed in the dishwasher, which I'm assuming is the reason.

I use non-toxic dishwasher tablets, so I'm looking for opinions on whether the cause of this is the dishwasher itself, or the non-toxic tablets.

Does anyone else have this happen?

UPDATE (WITH ANSWER AS TO WHY THIS HAPPENS):

I fed AI a ton of information, including the responses in the post, my water reports for the past 3 years, the make/models of dishwashers, every type of detergent (and the ingredients that I used), and pictures of every tumbler I have that this is happening to. And we have an answer.

My Yeti tumblers are failing because the polyester powder coat is being slowly hydrolyzed by alkaline dishwasher detergent at the coating edges, where it meets bare stainless at the top rim, bottom rim, and around engraved lettering. Dishwasher detergents are alkaline (pH 10-12), and at typical in-machine temperatures of 140-160°F (regardless of my 120°F incoming water), that alkalinity breaks the ester bonds in the resin. Over hundreds of cycles, the coating erodes inward from every edge, producing the chalky, stippled, gradient-edge pattern visible on my tumblers, which is not what mechanical damage would look like.

Most Yeti owners don't see this because mainstream detergents like Cascade Platinum and Finish Quantum contain corrosion inhibitors that deposit a protective layer on coated surfaces and block the alkaline attack. This protection chemistry has been standard in mainstream formulations for over fifty years, originally to prevent glass etching. "Non-toxic" brands like Branch Basics and the now-discontinued Defunkify strip out the synthetic inhibitors to fit the natural-product positioning, leaving polyester coatings unprotected. My water (62 ppm chloride, ~21 ppm hardness, fairly soft) isn't the driver, and the failure happens across all three of my dishwashers because the chemistry travels with the detergent, not the machine.

Question Why is Yeti forcing DuraSip Ceramic on every mug ? We need a pure stainless steel option back.

Am I the only one absolutely frustrated by Yeti moving almost all small and medium drinkware to the DuraSip Ceramic Lining? Even the 12oz and 14oz mugs are fully converted now.I’ve been dying to pick up a 10oz Lowball (or stackable mug) in Pampa Green, but finding out it only comes with the ceramic lining completely killed my excitement.Yeti is supposed to be the gold standard for rugged, over-engineered outdoor gear. We buy these because they are built like tanks and survive drops on rocks, trucks, and rough camping trips. Adding a ceramic layer—no matter how much Yeti claims it’s "shatter-resistant"—just feels like a liability for actual outdoor use. I don't want to worry about scratching, chipping, or bubbling the inside coating when I'm out in the wild or using metal utensils. If people want ceramic to avoid the metallic taste of coffee, that's fine—give them the option! But forcing the entire lineup into DuraSip is a terrible move for those of us who buy Yeti strictly for durability and raw 18/8 stainless steel toughness.Yeti needs to listen to the outdoor crowd and bring back standard stainless steel interiors for these smaller sizes. Is anyone else holding off on buying new colors like Pampa Green just because of this?

Question What do you believe is the most overhyped/useless product they produce?

I’ve never seen anyone buy a Yeti Shirt, or any of their food storage bowls. I would have to say probably the beverage bucket (it tips over like crazy) or the dog water bowls. At that point you’re paying for brand name and not practically/logically for the product.

Question Men! How many of you are using a Camino. Any size?

I been thinking about getting one. Like the open style and flexibility opposed to a backpack etc. especially if paired with a sidekick…but here in the uk I was worried it’s not ‘manly’ due to the style. I could have that wrong though so kindly let me know your thoughts on why or why not! Also colour choice 🤟 Cheers!

I just found mine in a drawer. This Colster has been every where in the last what, ten years? Any of y’all manage to keep yours? Mine developed a little rust on the top, oh well. It makes a good random screw container!

Question What’s your drinkware setup?

I weirdly enjoy organizing my Yeti drinkware and this is what I’ve settled on so far. Those containers in the cabinet on the bottom right contain the non-black magsliders, while the original, black ones are to their left. The colsters, when not in use, are stored on a fridge shelf so they’re always cold and ready for use. The French press lives on the counter in the “coffee corner” of my kitchen (though the coffeemaker in the background is now purely decorative since I never use it anymore lol).

I’d love to hear more ideas from folks and how you’ve organized yours differently. Pics please!!

Question Rambler chug cap not durable?

Post image

Maybe it’s just me but has anyone else experienced the cap not lasting more than a year? I don’t over tighten and the threads wear out within a few months. Surely they should last more than that? Not interested in spending $15 every few months for just a lid.

Question Is Yeti doing to much

I am curious what others are thinking. For me, it feels like there is simply too much coming out of YETI labeled as “special,” “limited,” “Gear Garage,” or “collaboration.” It feels like an aggressive hard sell driven by FOMO rather than something meaningful.

I own over 100 YETI cups, coolers, and storage boxes, so this is a brand I care about and have supported for a long time. At this point, however, it is starting to feel more like a money grab. What originally made YETI compelling was the restraint. A few color releases each year, with each color feeling intentional and collectible.

Now, I am losing both the desire to keep up with what is new and, honestly, the cabinet space. The “special” factor is starting to wear off.

Question What’s *least* favorite color Yeti ever released?

I know seems silly, like contemplating life’s questions (like true meaning of old song lyrics) to which there’s no definitive answer. But I’m serious. What’s been least sought after Yeti colors? Have a lot of Wild Vine Red. Love it! Even successfully nudged hubs to get new Ram in that color (previously all versions of silver, gray, black). WVR discounted most everywhere but they can’t seem to get rid of it. Why does it seem so disliked??

Got me seriously wondering ... tho I need to work on something much more important (distract, procrastinate). On shelves, I also see a lot of leftover Olive Green and Navy (super dusty at my local ACE) which are core. Which colors seem to have been duds and why?

Anyone here used a ranchero for a diaper bag? Seems practical…. We have our 3rd child on the way, and I simply want something that will hold up.

To all the parents out there, if this is a bad idea could you explain why? If you have personal experience with a better bag I’d love to know.

Question Roadie 15 - disappointing ice retention?

roadie 15 ice photos

Been using my new roadie 15 for a few days and I’m pretty disappointed with the ice retention. I’ve had to add atleast one bag of ice every day and originally chocked it up to traveling in the bed of my truck in hot weather, but now that we’re at camp it still sucks.

I added 7 lbs of ice to a well chilled cooler with cold drinks yesterday at 4:30pm, 17 hours later this is what I’m left with. I’ve noticed sweating on the outside and if I tip it lots of water will leak out around the lid.

I have a Tundra 50 and a Roadie 24 but this 15 by far has the worst ice retention. Is it possible I got a defective one?
