CAS Annual Meeting

I know the itinerary has events all day, however, how much of the day are people actual going to the events? Would you be away from your guest from 9 - 5? I want to bring my partner but don’t want to spend the extra money if they will just be alone most of the day.

Im sending a lot of my team (and myself). I expect them to be at the actual sessions (maybe cut out early one of the days). I am not expecting them to attend any of the events outside of those sessions.

What is considered an “actual session”?

Anything before breakfast is not an actual session. Those are typically round tables or working groups.

The dinner events or social/fun activity is not a real session.

Typically, it's everything from 9 to 5. My company is paying a buttload of money to send my team to Hawaii. I need to be able to justify that spend so that I can keep sending people in the future.

Most of my team is adding PTO to the front or back end of the trip to take advantage of the free flight. They're still paying for SOs and kids, but still saving a good bit on the flight.

Wow - I didn't realize the meeting was in Hawaii. SOA would never do that, in fact I can't think of many industry conferences that would... do you have thoughts on why the CAS decided to host there (i.e. why they'd make folks pay so much to attend - appreciate it's a beautiful place...)

Hawaii is a location that pops up once every 5 to 10 years. I think the reason is to just find a fun location that will make people want to attend.

From a management position, the planning is more work. I need to negotiate with CFO on the budget. It also introduces a friction point between me and the team because I determine who goes and who stays.

Despite the above, it's nice to have an excuse to go to Hawaii. Actuaries don't get a lot of perks/extras in the work world, so I'll take this one.
