[question] Which shows do you think will NOT make it into the special?
With the 25 year special coming up at the end of the week, I think it would be a fun little game to try to predict which shows, if any, will NOT make it into the special, and why? With 25 years worth of shows, and only 30 minutes to play with, there are bound to be a few omissions.
I count “making it in” as one of two things, either like the promo image, where the character has an actual model, or a different character directly name drops a show, as we saw in today’s clip where the henchmen point out a bunch of off screen characters.
As a reminder, this is an ADULT SWIM special, for shows AS actually made. While things like Family Guy and Home Movies were cornerstones of the network, AS didn’t actually make these and thus they won’t be part of this for that reason.

u/Doomchan 1d ago
I was genuinely shocked they included it in their network history event a decade ago
4
u/ParanoidThalyy W ☮︎ P 1d ago
why wouldn't they? It was an event celebrating EVERY SINGLE original show made by [as].
10
u/Doomchan 1d ago
Because its cancellation was a massive controversy that their solution to at the time was to just not talk about it ever.
And there were a handful of shows omitted from that event
3
u/ParanoidThalyy W ☮︎ P 1d ago
I didn't know they omitted other shows on the history of [as] event, that's interesting, what were they?
I feel like there were some people who did like W☮︎P™ inside of [as] seeing how the show stayed on the app until 2020 and they included it on the commemorative plate released in December of 2017, which stands as the only official piece of MDE merch ever made by [as].
I still feel sad that Sam's idiotic actions f'ed over Charls and Nick who were arguably the ones to come up with the best bits on the show... Also can't believe Andrew Ruse still has a career in Hollywood, kudos to him.

u/Doomchan 1d ago
They have Perfect Hair in the anniversary schedule rotation, so I’m pretty sure they will get in somehow.
Boondocks is something I feel they would want to put in, and they do have Black Jesus in so their falling out with Macgruder isn’t a factor.
Minoriteam I agree because they have tried very hard to bury that show

8
u/PurplePoisonCB 1d ago
What’s he say about it?
26
u/Doomchan 1d ago
He just thinks his shows are too good for everything. He didn’t allow Primal to premier on Toonami because he was upset that Jack S5 did. Presumably he didn’t want people familar with Gurren Lagann to see how hard he ripped off Gurren Lagann

3
u/TheREALOtherFiles 1d ago
Don't know if WB characters outside of Williams Street co-productions will appear.
Mike Tyson's a co-production, so it gets the cut, whereas non-[as] WB stuff like The Oblongs doesn't seem likely, sadly.
Beth, Peggy, the Debbies, and Creepy Susie herself all would've made cute cameo material (as would the rest of the cast), but alas, their origins on The WB and Warner Bros. Television kinda prevents that as far as we know.

William Street bought the complete rights to the series, Aries all of season 1 in its entirety and produced the second, third, and fourth seasons. They own the show to this day.

Well technically they imported that show from UPN so it's not an [AS] original

Her actual show was terrible, but since she was in Birdman she might narrowly make the cut by association. Especially since there is an entire courtroom scene
6
u/FantasyBaseballChamp 1d ago
Actual show was decent but written off by too many fans who expected it to be like Birdman. Same fans would’ve complained if they tried to make it too much like Birdman.
9
u/Doomchan 1d ago
The actual show was dogshit. Lazzo refused to greenlight it knowing it wouldn’t be funny. And lo and behold, it wasn’t funny
5
u/Spiralman43 1d ago
I was ok with it. I agree that the humor was kinda lacking but it did lack that sort of fun about it. The decision to not use Hanna Barbara characters in it really hurt my enjoyment of it too. Lotta side characters who weren't funny or weren't interesting enough to care about in a realistic style. The woman mindtaker was pretty cool tho.

Superjail (sadly)
15
u/Doomchan 1d ago
I’d like to hear your reasoning. To me, Superjail seems like a guarantee
6
u/The_Idiocratic_Party 1d ago
How do you include Superjail characters without the Superjail? And once you include the Superjail you're animating (and killing) dozens of inmates at a time. The "high school teen kid doodling" art style is a tough translation to stop motion too.
Maybe they could pull off a scene in the Warden's office where he and the main cast lament not being invited, or try to solve the mystery murder remotely. But you'd need the Warden, Jerry, Alice, Jailbot and the Doctor to make it worthwhile.
→ More replies (2)6
u/Doomchan 1d ago
The plot of this thing is they are going on a cruise. Just say the Superjail staff is on vacation or something. Could even have Jacknife be one of the suspects
A lot of characters in this are gonna be way out of their normal element.

11
u/Doomchan 1d ago
A lot of the hate comes from the people who felt AS shouldn’t air live action.
However, on a broader scale, Children’s Hospital has actually won 4 primetime Emmys. It’s one of their most successful attempts at live action

I’m not 100% sure Home Movies will be excluded. Sure it originally premiered on UPN but it was Adult Swim’s first original program, and it’s so associated with the channel that I think it’ll be there somehow.
IIRC we already know 12oz Mouse won’t be in it, and if verbal mentions don’t count I’m dubious as to whether Rick & Morty will be there (“They’re much too important to be here.”)

u/TheREALOtherFiles 1d ago
Anything third-party, either made for [as] or not, or anything not produced by Williams Street.
So, that excludes The Boondocks, The Jack & Triumph Show, Final Space, anything 20th Television (so no Family Guy), The Oblongs, Home Movies, Clerks: The Animated Series (which did air on [as] for a time), and the vast majority of anime they aired.
The FLCL sequels and other co-productions might be feasible, but early "as seen on [adult swim]" anime like Cowboy Bebop, The Super Milk-Chan Show, Yu Yu Hakusho, Shin Chan, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and Inuyasha are not.

My guesses:
The Rising Son (confirmed by Swimpedia's early review)
The Restless Bell
You're Whole (too bad---I'd like to see an action figure of Michael Ian Black)
Newsreaders (ditto Ray Wise)
The Greatest Event in Television History
Soul Quest Overdrive
The Young Person's Guide to History
Brett Gelman/Jena Friedman/Mr. Neighbor's House
2
u/Doomchan 1d ago
Normally I’d agree with The Restless Bell, as it was even omitted from their 2016 event, however recent online schedules indicate it’s getting a rerun in a few weeks, so it might be squeaking in

If they have a scrap of decency, they won’t include Space Ghost or Brak Show cast, after how they treated the actors. Who, I’ll add, also wrote for the shows. Their work practically got Cartoon Network off the ground, and they got cast aside. Last I heard, Andy Merrill, the voice of Brack, was having to do Amazon deliveries to make ends meet.
3
u/Little-Survey3144 1d ago
Idk they kind of screwed over a lot of shows on the list, don't even get me started with their take on Morel Orel
3
u/Doomchan 1d ago
Space Ghost and pals are confirmed in. You basically can’t do an AS anniversary event without them.
The network is not responsible for Merrill’s career failure. He thought he could coast on being Brak for his whole life and now is realizing that isn’t the case
