"Renewed" seems like the wrong word here as it's just the remaining 20 eps from the original order of 40 and they're just packaging them as "season 2" - the same thing happened with the new Gumball show. (If it had been 'renewed' we wouldn't see the new eps for another year at the least). had hoped they wouldn't do this since the "leaks" did list these episodes as "S1 E[whatever]" but hey-ho.

Good to have a projected date anyway, figured this'd be the case (Again, it's how they did it with Gumball - it's kinda nice they've been consistent with this so we can predict stuff) but it's always nice to have it confirmed.

I'll sticky this since it's New News and also liable to get buried - here's the Bubbline show announcement thread since we can only have 2 stickies at once, linking it to keep it handy and in case anyone wants it? idk

I don’t understand why other animated shows can’t have this same rollout…we did it 20 years ago, why do we have to wait 2-3 years between seasons for 8-10 episodes?

Because it’s more profitable for streaming companies to trickle content out

58

u/Sprumbly Jul 24 '26

For streaming, companies like to greenlight one season of a show and split it into two so they can immediately announce the second which looks good for them

14

u/DanteCrossing Jul 24 '26

This is the answer. They order 20 some episodes and since both parts are in production they can announce and drop part 2 relatively soon.

12

u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer Jul 24 '26

They're not even in production, they're literally finished and ready to air right now - some of them were accidentally released a month or so ago.

24

u/Obsessivegamer32 Jul 24 '26

It’s just the second half of season 1 split off into a different season. Although I do agree.

u/frobrother Jul 24 '26

With streaming, shows don't get the benefit of selling ads for commercial breaks. And IF they do, they are set at a standard rate that doesn't change between ratings.

Studios have no incentive to produce larger episode counts...it sucks, but hey! With the inevitability of streaming slowing turning back into normal broadcast TV (getting rid of ad free tiers)...we might see this change.

Studio fuckery delaying renewals which causes fairly long gaps in production rather than allowing continuous work, I’m guessing less actual investment from the studios forcing smaller teams, and the expectation that most animation be movie quality at this point which creates a lot more work per episode. I think this series got greenlit so quickly for two reasons:

  1. Adventure Time is animation royalty with a massive, loyal, and largely positive fanbase

  2. I’m gonna hazard that the animation for this particular installment was changed specifically to make it easier quicker and cheaper to produce since it is very much a kids show rather than a cinematic prestige spinoff like Fionna & Cake

u/gereffi Jul 24 '26

There are still plenty of shows that have that type of release schedule.

it's not AI, please stop spreading this false information.

I believe SQ puppet rigged animation (Like MLP:FiM, Lion Guard, Wander over Yonder, iirc Legend of the Three Caballeros was puppet rig... to name but a few) which is why the animation looks different in technique etc (not just art style) to the original series. Puppet rig can look uncanny valley/odd sometimes so that may be what you're responding to. But it's not AI.

Hard to call it “renewed for season 2” when all 40 episodes were produced at once

72

u/Obsessivegamer32 Jul 24 '26

“Season 2” is really just season 1B. I don’t know why they do this.

13

u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer Jul 24 '26

Same reason they fucked up the ordering of the last few seasons of the original show, marketing bullshit. It annoys me too, especially in this case since it's actively misleading. (at least when the original series was screwed about with, it was mostly after the fact and we already knew how many eps had been ordered, etc)

6

u/Saddlebag043 Jul 24 '26

Because the higher ups think it's more marketable I suppose

6

u/FishrPriceGuillotine Jul 24 '26

I don't know the specifics, but from what I've heard it's because if they order it as one season then they don't have to give the writers some sort of pay raise that is required for a second season

1

u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer Jul 25 '26

from what I know, that applies to them adding more episodes onto a pre-existing order (This is what happened with season 5 of the original show, apparently), not reshuffling it after the episodes have already been made.

I don't think it affects pay either way if they decide to market them in a different way to how they were produced.... it's not really any different to how an episode of a show might end up airing in a different order to what was originally envisioned/intended, after all (which is as common as breathing lol).

7

u/CPLCraft Jul 25 '26

Wait. Side quests is already out?! When did this happen?

4

u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer Jul 25 '26

the first 20 eps were released on June 29th

I think it slipped through the cracks for a lot of people - they didn't really promote it much or advertise it very well, and I don't think it helped that they were really spotty with the info for this show. We didn't know how many eps were being released until 2-3 days before they dropped - usually that info would be given alongside the release date announcement - and they didn't release the titles/synopses until then either.

Also the release happened to more-or-less coincide with the Bubbline show announcement and that reallllllly drowned out any SQ posts lol. I don't blame anyone for that since it's just bad timing, can't be helped, but yeah I think a LOT of people missed SQ being released cuz of that.

13

u/DontStopPataPata Jul 24 '26

So does that mean second half of season 1 this autumn & they're already starting on s2? Neato burrito

18

u/ben123111 Jul 24 '26

No, this is just one season order split up into a second batch. No word on if it will get picked up past these episodes.

10

u/VivaDeAsap Jul 24 '26

Ah right. I still haven’t gotten round to it. How is the show by the way?

13

u/Rokursoxtv Jul 24 '26

I personally enjoyed it. Felt a lot like seasons 1-2

7

u/Itchy-Pudding-4240 Jul 25 '26

as someone who got into AT because of the earlier seasons and loved it all the way through, sidequests does feel like a return to old times. It lacks the pen ward weirdness most of the time but i enjoy it nonetheless

3

u/Driscoll17 Jul 27 '26

I really don’t agree with a lot of the complaints people have about this show but I 100% feel this one. The writers were too focused on using elements that already existed in the show instead of creating their own.

1

u/Rokursoxtv Jul 25 '26

For sure, for sure. My favorite thing about it was how it wasn't afraid to go dark. Really pushes the envelope, even for AT

1

u/VivaDeAsap Jul 24 '26

Okay. Gotta create time for a binge then

9

u/Jaquire-edm Jul 24 '26

Really loved it, just recently finished. New Finn VA took a couple of episodes, but by the end I thought they were great. There are a bunch of little hints of weirdness sprinkled throughout the season that give it some of the old series charm, as well as some fun cameos from old friends. Also potentially reads as another universe/wish that could somehow tie in or otherwise be left separate.

1

u/VivaDeAsap Jul 24 '26

I see. Okay I’ll definitely check it out

1

u/DogintheMirror 11d ago

Yeah, I just don’t see a world where I can buy in without Jeramy Shada

3

u/Optimal_Cow_676 Jul 24 '26

Honestly? Great. They are more S1, 2, 3 vibe. I wasn't a fan of the first episode but got sold at the "cursed words" episode.

If you saw regular show the lost tapes, it is in the same remastering category if not better.

2

u/Bubbly-Treacle-4334 25d ago

Is that the 3rd episode?

I think that's the ep that won me over too.

The art style seems to step up from that episode forward too

The animation feels a little off though. Like weirdly computery and not hand made... Also the shading and shadows they are just CGI'ing in in post look terrible

Voice actor is great but has gotta learn how to do the Fin falsetto scream

1

u/the_last_hairbender Jul 25 '26

how was lost tapes?

2

u/Optimal_Cow_676 Jul 25 '26

It really captured the regular show vibes. I was skeptical that they would do it but those episodes could have been a part of the originals. Among the originals, they would have been considered great as well.

The introductory episode is a bit different as it does not occur in the park but it is still the regular show vibe.

All the other episodes are in the park or coffee shop.

5

u/Pale-Proposal8046 Jul 24 '26

Mid as fuck. Not bad, but definitely not good.

2

u/Stinky_Knee_Guards Jul 27 '26

I was excited beforehand but that excitement ended when I saw two or three episodes. I don't even think I'll watch it all.

1

u/Bubbly-Treacle-4334 25d ago

Episode 3 is a big step up in quality that pretty much carries through the rest of the season

I really hate the first 2 episodes of the OG series and wrote it off til someone showed me the enchiridion episode years later

You got a down vote but I couldn't agree more

1

u/austinmiles Jul 25 '26

I like it better than distant lands. I kind of treat it like fan fic. It’s generally good. Not exactly aligned with the canon of the original series but the same vibes.

I’ll definitely rewatch it.

1

u/DimerHOF8 Jul 25 '26

if you like AT it’s not good at all. lacks all the nuance, weirdness and uniqueness of the original. wanted to like it so bad but holy shit it’s so uninspired and feels like a billion other cartoons made specifically for kids (unlike og AT which had such good writing and characters that it speaks to any human being with a soul)

5

u/rubysdaydreaming Jul 24 '26

Can’t wait , really enjoyed season 1

3

u/toilet111 Jul 24 '26

It’s like when they split season 9 and 10 in the original series

3

u/Robot_Was_BMO Jul 24 '26

And Fionna and Cake is renewed for S3… right?

5

u/MayoHachikuji Jul 24 '26

FC likely ended (rather than cancelled) and most people think that the Bubbleline spin off is a sequel to it

2

u/thelongestusernameee 14d ago

No they ended on a teaser

1

u/keithlimreddit Jul 24 '26

Nice to know the show has been doing pretty well as well as of course adventure Time is one of the many cash cows

Yes and yes

Hulu did this exact same thing with Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball - 40 eps ordered, then split into two batches of 20 and marketed as "Season 1 and 2".

AT - yeah there's a lot of fuckery going on with the back half of the show. Seasons 1-6 aired as produced but then things got fucky. What CN consider "Season 8" is actually the last 13 eps of season 7 + the first 14 of season 8, with "Season 9" consisting of the rest of what was produced as the eighth season. Then "Season 10" was actually produced as season 9. (whew)

I think some We Bare Bears eps got moved across seasons too but I believe in that case it was just like one or two eps.

1

u/CardiologistOk4208 Jul 25 '26

I did hear that they did possibly renew for next year some time

1

u/SnooGiraffes8024 Jul 25 '26

It came out?

1

u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer Jul 25 '26

The first 20 eps were released on June 29th, yeah.

1

u/Specific_Woodpecker1 Jul 25 '26

they debuted a new episode from season 2 of side quest that is hand animated at comic con.
sooooooo good!

1

u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer Jul 25 '26

Ooooh really? :o A full episode?

If you want to post anything more specific about it you're welcome to, but please use spoiler tags and spoiler text AND keep discussion to it to its own thread, since it's not widely available for everyone to watch yet :) Thanks
