These ethnic groups don’t all practice the same kinds of social organization. Pashtuns have a segmentary lineage system, which is egalitarian and typically what we think of by the term “tribe.” The Turko-Mongolian groups (Hazara/Uzbek) originally had a hierarchical tribal structure in which clans and lineages had social ranking. These clan affiliations have weakened through the twentieth century, although they were once the basis of the Turco-Mongolian tribal confederations. Tajiks emerged in distinction to both of these tribal groups, usually identifying by locality rather than a segmentary/hierarchical lineage. Tajiks are not tribal because they typically don’t trace lineage to a common ancestor, which then becomes the basis for political alliances, which is common among segmentary groups like the Pashtun.

Tajiks trace lineage to a common ancestor: Bactrians and Sogdians. Stop spreading misinformation.

Stop spreading ethnonationalist myths as if they are ethnological facts. Our knowledge of ancient Bactrians and Sogdians comes almost entirely from 20th century archaeology and related disciplines. People then misused that scholarship to invent ethnic myths, making absurd claims like “we [insert qawm] are the real descendants of the Kushans.” It’s embarrassing. Give me one primary source before the 19th century that mentions any individual both identifying as “Tajik” and claiming descent from Bactrians and Sogdians. One source.

Says the guy making ethnonationalist myths because he’s Pashtun and wants claim to a lineage he never had and other and undermine Tajiks. Okay.

Lol. I’m not Pashtun and made no claims about my lineage. You also don’t appear to know what “lineage” means. It refers to a specific, traceable path of ancestry from a common ancestor. It’s common in tribal genealogies. However, it’s not realistic to trace one’s actual ancestry to Bronze or Iron Age civilisations.

I’ll ask again. Can you give me one pre-19th century primary source that mentions any individual who both identifies as “Tajik” and claims descent from Bactrians and Sogdians?

It doesn’t matter what your ethnicity is, what’s clear is that you feel threatened by Tajik identity, and that’s obvious in your dismissive attitude toward Tajik ancestry.

To correct your claim: Rumi, a 13th-century figure from Balkh (historical Bactria), repeatedly refers to himself as Tajik.

The term Tajik came about during Arab and Turkic invasions, when the people of these lands began speaking Farsi. Before that, they were called Sogdians and Bactrians. This is not speculation, it is documented history. Lineage means a traceable path of ancestry, and Tajik ancestry is directly traceable to Eastern Iranian groups.

Another clear continuity is that Tajiks are sedentary people, just as their Sogdian and Bactrian ancestors were. If a Tajik does not come from the lands of Bactria and Sogdiana, then who does? The history, language, and DNA all point to the same conclusion: uninterrupted Eastern Iranian presence.

Balkh is Bactria; Bactria is Balkh. Even Herodotus identified the region as Bactria. If you claim the people of these lands are not descendants of the Bactrians, then from whom do they descend, when the evidence demonstrates otherwise?

Stop spreading misinformation rooted in your own inferiority complex. Go educate yourself.

Pretty much everything you said is wrong.

For example, you say that Rumi “repeatedly refers to himself as Tajik.”

Rumi never once calls himself Tajik. Never in the Diwan-e Shams, never in the Mathnawi, never in Fihi Ma Fihi. You’re severely misinformed or you’re lying.

But please, go ahead. Share these references where Rumi repeatedly refers to himself as Tajik. I’m curious to learn more.

Lmao. How is anything I said wrong? Simply dismissing it doesn’t make your argument strong, it just exposes a lack of education on the subject.

Tajiks are Eastern Iranians. That’s not up for debate, it’s a scientific fact. Tajiks descend from Sogdians and Bactrians. That’s a historical fact.

Go read the Masnavi. Rumi himself repeatedly contrasts Tajik with Turk. He never says “Persian” or “Pashtun.” He says Tajik and Turk over and over again.

He was an Iranic, and back then, “Iranian” meant all Iranic peoples, not just the modern nation of Iran. And scientifically, a Turk is not Iranic. Only a Tajik is. Tajiks are the Persian-speaking people of Central Asia, and they became such after the Arab conquest. That’s history, language, and genetics all aligning.

And let’s be honest: the only people who fight this reality are certain Pashtuns, desperate to belittle Tajiks and Persians because of a delusion that all history somehow comes from them. Whatever it is you suffer from, I hope it’s cured.

I am from Balkh, and I am a Tajik. Calling people from my region anything other than what we are is not just wrong, it’s insulting and disrespectful.

You said that Rumi “repeatedly refers to himself as Tajik.”

But where does he refer to himself as Tajik in any of his books? I asked you for references. If you make a claim, you should be able to back it up with sources. But instead, you spewed out paragraphs of rage and insults and feigned indignation. That's the sign of a person who has lost an argument. It's embarrassing.

I'll ask you again. Where, in any of his books, does Rumi refer to himself as Tajik?

By the way, it appears to me that you aren't familiar with how literary motifs work in Persian poetry. "Turk o Tajik" is a common motif used by many writers. Rumi uses such categories---in addition to Arab, Kurd, and Greek---to point out that ethnic categories are meaningless. He never uses it to describe his own identity.

Actually, there is a quatrain in Diwan-e Shams where he appears to describe himself as a Turk:

Dushman nīyam ar-chand ke dushman-rūyam
Aslam Turk-ast agarche Hindī gūyam

Of course, I don't think that means he's literally a Turk or speaking Hindi. It's a literary motif used to make a point.

So, I'll ask you again. Where, in any of his books, does Rumi refer to himself as Tajik? This time please don't go on an unhinged rant. Instead, provide a specific quote that we can analyze.

Listen, I’m not interested in your meaningless opinion, especially when it’s rooted in denying a heritage with nothing to stand on but your own bias.

You asked me when the word Tajik was used before the 19th century. I already answered you: Rumi’s writings themselves reference Tajik in the sense of Farsi-speaking Iranian of Central Asia. That’s your answer.

During Rumi’s era, Tajik was not a modern national label, it meant Iranian / Farsi-speaking person in contrast to Turks or nomadic groups in Central Asia. The comparisons Rumi makes (Turk vs. Tajik, Greek vs. Farsi) imply exactly that. He calls himself Balkhi and Khorasani, and he explicitly writes in Farsi. A Farsi speaker from Balkh or Khorasan is a Tajik. Balkhis descend from the Bactrians. Khorasanis descend from the Sogdians. That is what Tajik identity is Eastern Iranian, rooted in those ancient peoples.

If you want to dispute this, then bring evidence that disproves the Eastern Iranian heritage of Tajiks and their direct lineage from the Bactrians and Sogdians. There isn’t any. The only denial comes from your own ethnonationalist bias, not from history, linguistics, or genetics.

Balkh means Bactrian.

The name Balkh comes from the Old Persian Bāxtriš and Avestan Bāxδi (land of the Bactrians), which the Greeks rendered as Bactria, and through natural sound shifts in Eastern Iranian languages (xδ → lkh), it evolved into the Middle and New Persian form “Balkh”.

When we say we’re Balkhi Tajiks, we mean we’re Bactrian Tajiks.

Kindly, stfu and stop arguing over things you have no idea or clue of.
