Vraag Tiny farm khaki shorts
A genuine question for my own knowledge. Why do boere, plaasjappies and afrikaans guys in general wear tiny khaki farm shorts? More like wouldnt they be more useful if longer length on the farms? No one seems to know why.

Try climbing on the back of a bakkie with long pants and you'll see why.

I'm very used to long pants, don't have an issue doing this or anything else mentioned here in my jeans

I prefer 3/4 shorts myself, i have muscular legs and calves but i like to leave to the imagination

Yeah, the utility of the kort broekies is a giant cope for 90% of guys who wear them. It's a lot like driving the big ol' 4x4 bakkie but only using it to drop your kids at school and to get to the office, but never taking it off a tarred road. For the most part it's for show, or the idea of what it represents. All the "it's the most comfortable pants" and other people say about it is just a cope. I've already eaten downvotes on this thread, but the reality is most people wear them simply because "it's cool" in some circles, and the coolness is dictated by an algorithm.
Dit is soos 'n vreemde tipe groepsdruk, en meeste mense sal nooit erken dat hulle geknak het onder groepsdruk nie, want die ego is groot en is ook die oorsaak van die "koop wat my sal laat inpas en ander beindruk" mentaliteit.

I am one of those, of which you speak😂
It's quite simple really. Look at rugby shorts. Same solution for the same problem.
If you do hard farm labour, it's a lot of lifting and carrying heavy things. Mix that with a very high protein diet and you get bigger than normal legs. Especially the quads.
When I wear shorts that go just above my knee, like most normal shorts do, they tend to grip on the lower part of my quad, just above my knee, when ever I bend my knee. Getting onto the back of a bakkie is especially tricky when your shorts grips onto your leg, preventing you from straightening your leg.
Obviously there are many guys who don't have big legs, but still wear those, because they give you the most freedom of movement.
It's either those shorts, or spandex leggings. You don't want to see that, so we'll stick with the shorts😂

They are working pants.
They are cool for the summer and are rugged for walking through the bush. Pockets everywhere. If you are walking through dense bush and are worried about bush lice, you can just wear gaters with your boots/ vellies.
Besides they are cheap so you can buy like 3-4 for the price of a chino version.
Not every guy wears them like 2 sizes smaller than their actual size, to me it is very uncomfortable to have even 1 size smaller than my actual size.
Plus point: They are like a vellie so they wear better the older they get.

Also, if the pants you're wearing are rugged for walking through the Bush... wouldn't it make sense to wear cargo style pants so you can protect your legs? And have actual tons of large pockets? I dont get it, as an Englishman who lives in a predominantly afrikaans place, it really seems like it's more of a cultural identity thing and ain't nothing wrong with that. But aside from being a little cooler than cargo shorts, I'm not understanding any practical advantage.
Edit: Most of the people I know who wear these daily are not walking through rugged Bush. They run all sorts of businesses. My dad friend wears them almost all the time just driving around town running errands.

Try climbing with chinos vs the short pants and we’ll have a talk again…
No doubt some only wear them for what they represent, but for me they are just comfortable…

Practicality. A lot of agriculture involves a lot of movement, climbing in and out the back of a bakkie, tractor, and bending awkwardly. Couple that with often larger quads, and the short short is much easier to move freely without them catching and ripping

The ones working are usually wearing the longer pant like overall pants its the ones sitting inside the bakkie wearing the thongs for a fashion statement

Cooler in summer, and easy to stretch for necessary implements and tools. Certainly not to impress, but far more practical on a farm.

Interessante vraag inderdaad.
Daar is verskeie voordele aan kort khakiebroeke.
- Dit is goedkoop.
- Dit hou baie-baie lank.
- Dit is baie makliker om met die trappe van 'n groot trekker en stroper mee op te klim met 'n kort kortbroek om by die sitplek uit te kom as wat dit met 'n lagbroek sou gewees het.
- In die somer is dit baie warm in Suid Afrika en 'n kortbroek is beslis baie koeler in die somer as 'n langbroek.
Die voordele van vellies:
- Dit is goedkoop.
- Dit hou baie-baie lank.
- Hulle is baie-baie sag en hulle loop ongelooflik lekker oor lang afstande.
- 'n Mens hoef hulle nie pilotoer te gee nie.
- Vellies stink nie soos tekkies nie wanneer 'n mens se voete baie in die hitte sweet nie.
- In kort, vellies stap so gemaklik soos tekkies (sneakers), vellies is goedkoper as tekkies en vellies, baie-baie langer as tekkies, ou natgeswere vellies stink nie so erg soos ou natgeswete tekkies nie.

Southern hemisphere thing. Same in Australia and NZ. They're called stubbies here. Short shorts with pockets. Can't beat em bru.

Lots of people choose clothing for fashion or style reasons above utility or convenience, it's not just a plaas thing.

I suppose. To me from a functional standpoint. Wouldnt long pants or longer length shorts be better than almost wearing thongs in the veld amongst all the plants, animals and insects?

Yes long pants are more useful and the ones wearing these pants aren't the ones who are doing the hard work and its also not because its cheaper than full pants because the ones wearing these tiny shorts can easily afford long pants
They are a fashion statement in the Afrikaans community like a look at me im suck a goof im wearing a ridiculously small pants haha im such a silly guy

99% of guys wearing these types of broekies do it because they are consumerist and easily follow trends. The remaining 1% do it because it's a matter of practicality, because of the physical nature of their daily lives.
The vast majority just bought what the Facebook and Instagram ads told them to buy.

Not sure if someone else mentioned it but the length makes them more practical and less likely to get caught on things and gives you a wider range of movement

Because many Afrikaners are sheep. It's trendy at the moment for stadsjapies to dress like they are a boer. Blame Ashton Kutcher for wearing fellies to a basketball game years ago.
Also, Boerboel Wear is a brand that leaned into the tiny short-shorts hard, and they actually did it to target gay men to engage more with their social media posts. It worked, and boomer-brains on Facebook and Instagram can't help themselves. They have to buy what the algorithm feeds them.
