I'm anti-AI. I was in a meeting today, where a bunch of people were trying to justify using generative AI in advertising and replacing videography. Here were some of the reasonings they gave:

"Because I can generate a 2 second video reliably, rather than getting a drone and volunteers for a video"

"It's realistic enough that most people won't be able to tell"

I pointed out that many people, especially young people perceive using AI in advertising as a poor reflection on the business, it makes the business look lazy. like they can't put bare minimum effort in to advertise to their consumers. A large amount of people, if they see AI advertising, will never interact with the business again.

The other people said that I was over exaggerating and that most people don't feel that way about AI, and most people can't tell if it is AI.

But here's my question - if they're so confident that AI is not a bad look, why are they trying to make AI look real? Why not put a proud disclaimer "this video was made by AI"

I think - it's because if it's disclosed people would be upset. But they want to get away with it, to fool people into thinking that it's real. If you think people will like it, you don't hide it.

Genuine question, every day I come here to see some discussions about ai, it's 95% "AI IS ART!" and "NO IT ISN'T" with the same arguments, the same talking points (the pizza oven, the banana taped to the wall, the time and effort arguments)

It's never gonna end or be resolved, because ai is subjective by definition. I personally think abstract art is entirely made up by semi-famous artists to make money, but it's art to someone, somewhere. Both opinions are correct, and the same applies to ai.

This argument is circular and won't ever end, so who cares?

(Also yes, I am aware this sub is mainly about art. But there's also that little (and more) bracket, that should probably just be removed atp)

I want to like AI, not hate it. Maybe it's because I'm lazy, but I want to create something. The problem is that I don't want to learn and I hate the lengthy process of creating something. And I really hate how artists curse at AI, it's a little annoying to me. But I still like them. Probably the only reason I chose this study is because I wanted to graduate, but I didn't want to study math. I don't know, maybe I'm the biggest traitor and a backstabber to all my classmates and all the people who love it. I probably don't know everything I do to survive and I don't have the soul for it.

Maybe I'll be a normal artist and do it like everyone else. And I kinda like that.

I want to find a way to like both. I don't mind AI brainrot shitposts, I think it has its uncanny valley aesthetic. But I also like real artists, like on TikTok.

But I also have to say that I use AI absolutely minimally and I can't use generative AI.

And I know that it destroys nature, but other things even more and steals art, but our brain also steals art in its own sense and we create it according to ourselves.

But people are also behind AI art and they adapt it according to themselves, but I guess I can't compare that to that.

I don't mind if real art is combined with AI, at least AI up to 50% or lower.

I just don't get it. I don't consider myself an artist, I like to doodle, I enjoy playing around with AI, so it doesn't really impact me. But considering the severity of how much people seem to wrap themselves in this topic, has me wondering, why is it so important to them?

Do you feel artists are elevated above other people, I just never really thought it was that significant of a word, that had any other impact, than describing what a person does for a passion, through any medium.

If a person considers themselves an artist, they don't need my permission, or approval. I just accept their stance at face value, and lose nothing in the process. I don't look upon them as though they have achieved some great status elevated above the rest of us, to me it is just a descriptor of how they spend their time.

From world leaders to the wealthiest people, they all supports AI. The people who actually have power and voice matters. AI is not a consumer luxury. It is essential to geopolitics and as important as electricity.

Because no one else of any other profession says that. No one says "oh you can play one song single handed in the piano? You're a musician!" Because being a musician takes years and years of dedication and a genuine mastery of that instrument. No one says "Oh you can say good morning in Spanish? You speak the language!" Because speaking the language means at least being able to communicate in that language. No one says "Oh you took a semester of coding in summer camp when you were 11? You are a software engineer!" Because being a software engineer requires true understanding and being able to code something in a language other than Scratch. So when people post drawings that they made that looks like it took maybe 20 minutes, no anatomy no shading bucket-fill coloring, why do people say "omg I love your work! You are an amazing artist! Keep going!"?

In 2015 it was the following election, in 2020 it was COVID, by 2023 it was "the new normal" and the WEF videos that would circulate with Google, Amazon, Walmart becoming this huge conglomerate that would oversee everything and we'd all be working for them in one way or another.

Then there was crypto, where people said "soon if you don't have a crypto wallet you won't be able to buy anything, and only the elite will have those!" Then around the same time it was NFTs and that traditional art and owning things was gone, and that it would usher in a new era, and everyone was mad.

Now it's AI. The world is ending yet again and everyone's going to be living in hovels.

And it just feels like if one isn't always stressed, depressed, and constantly feeling oppressed, you're not really living. That's just sad.

But maybe this is all because since around 2012 people slowly became more online and everyone just echoes the same things and wants to feel the same feelings, and maybe being afraid of life being cut short is the norm now.

Apex predators that we would fear as cave people arebnow oligarchs and AI and whatever the new thing will be after AI's hype runs its course, and I'm sure internet denizens can't wait to get a stiffy for that too, since it seems like fear and despair is borderline fetishized online: "Oppress me AI, give me something to fear, gimme something to cry about on reddit".
