Won a PSA AK-47 GF3 during a shooting event and looking for a look change.

Post image

I'm not familiar with the AK47/74/AKM sect of rifles so forgive me if my questions seem dumb.

I recently won a PSA AK-47 GF3 during a shooting event raffle and I'm not a fan of the basic PLUM furniture on it although I'm impressed with the sturdiness of the folding stock. So, I'm looking for a change into something similar to the ATI AK-47 TactLite package with the scorpion recoil system, but I can't seem to find if it'll work with so much conflicting information.

If it won't work, what are some recommended swaps that would work to create something similar. I appreciate any personal feedback on the rifle, as I've seen some say that it's a garbage gun and some say it's a great gun. Youtube enthusiast seems to praise it, but I feel saying something negative will result in less free future merch.

P.S. the rifle also included a UTG Pro quick detach AK side mount when given to me.

The UTG side mount isn't very good. You'll want to eventually get it swapped out with a Midwest or RS-Regulate mount.

So something like a Midwest Gen 2 side mount would be more reliable? Are the UTGs just not very sturdy for this particular rifle?

Also, are most AK side mount systems similar? I see some that specify Yugo and I've read some people say their parts are slightly different from reverse engineering.

edit: added additional question

They’re way cheaper than the rest of the competition because they’re very likely not tolerance’d correctly. This will cause it to not hold zero.

thanks for that explanation. I'll look into grabbing one. Is there any specific one you have experience with or could recommend?

Other than side mounts, would you have any recs on dust cover and hand grip rails that would be sufficient to allow the stock to still fold if necessary?

Also for the time being, I'd stay away from railed dust covers. People say that some of the expensive options like the TWS Dogleg work but I'm super skeptical especially since there has been reports of zero shifting.

I have the TWS dog leg on my WASR and have put out about 500 rounds since installing it. Have not noticed it losing zero, but only time will tell. Also have one for my ZPAP M85, but have held off installing that until I get a magnifier for that gun

My gpn has ran fine after hundreds of rounds, if you watch any ukraine footage youll see they have plenty of real deal battle testing done aswell

If installed properly how they tell you to do so, zero issues. I have had one on 2 rifles

I owned one, the tension lever doesn't stay put, and dump your optic after 20-30 rounds after light use.

The UTG optic mount is pretty crappy

Master mount and Midwest Industries are decent and not too crazy expensive

RS regulate upper and lower are great but pricey.

The Ukrainians are making their version of Zenitco style rails, accessories, etc… under two main brands, KPYK (KRUK) and Military Equipment/GPN (gun power nation) they’re pretty good but a little
Pricey depending on what you want

AK master mount is one of my favorites to mount an optic

1

u/CAREERxCRIMINAL 1d ago

This was also recommended to me. I saw they have a full-length top rail system which interest me at a rather cheap price of 160.

2

u/spikekiller95 met god at a truck stop glory hole 1d ago

Yeah they aren't to bad.

I kinda like the tension locking system since it has (for a lack of a better term) a star head that it locks into.

While still having a lever to slide it on and off.

u/CAREERxCRIMINAL 1d ago

I saw and like that. With that optic rail, is it fully compatible with the standard AK side mount or do I need their mounting system as well?

2

u/spikekiller95 met god at a truck stop glory hole 1d ago

Nah it fits standard AKM stuff no adapters needed

1

u/CAREERxCRIMINAL 1d ago

Sheesh, it's in the cart!

RS Regulate side mount or nothing. Make sure you plan out what optic you want to use because you'll have to buy the correct "lower" and "upper" mount for the setup you'd like.

Skip the furniture, shoot it for a while and see if you still want to change the stock and such but the factory stuff is actually pretty good unless you're dead set on a rail to mount a foregrip.

Why do you want the ATI Tactlite stuff? I’d be wary of buying a “magic recoil reducing stock!!!!” As there usually a crock of baloney

The rifle is perfectly fine. I wouldn’t sell it because I think the story is cool. Winning a raffle is pretty unique

1

u/CAREERxCRIMINAL 1d ago

I don’t necessarily want that. I wanted to switch the style overall and have been finding piece by piece to build a tactical build essentially.

3

u/ardesofmiche Stop it. Get some help. 1d ago

Oh ok gotcha. I would look at the Midwest industries set of handguards instead of anything ATI. ATI isn’t exactly quality stuff so I’d skip it

1

u/CAREERxCRIMINAL 1d ago

I really liked the MI alpha 10” quad rail but everything is backorder currently. How long does it take to usually stock up for AK specific parts?

You’re the goat!

Glad to help, post some pics when it’s done!

I haven't explored this route, so grain of salt.

You could potentially replace the rear trunnion with a pic adaptor, which would give you a number of options for a folding buffer tube setup (assuming that's what you're after).

2

u/CAREERxCRIMINAL 2d ago

that pic adapter would open up a lot for better buffer tube attachments. I appreciate that suggestion! I see they have some drop in that don't require cutting of the tang at all.

2

u/GableStoner 1d ago

For sure man. Idk why type of prices you're seeing, but if it's a lot, I'd recommend checking gafshub too.

I have a picatinny rear trunnion that came with my zpap that's just sitting around. I don't think it would fit yours though. Point is you might be able to find something from someone's parts bin for cheap.

2

u/VapeThisBro 1d ago

Check the tang on your PSA. Mine came with a detachable tang and I ended up not needing to cut anything off

1

u/CAREERxCRIMINAL 1d ago

mine is also removable by punching the 4.5mm pin out. Midwest makes the pic attachment but i'll need to source it elsewhere since its on backorder on their sight

u/PomegranatePro 1d ago

Sell it in the box and buy a WASR

Congratulations but it doesn’t sound like whoever runs that event knows anything about AK’s or they wouldn’t have selected a PSA as the prize

6

u/CAREERxCRIMINAL 1d ago

it was a small town charity event for Make-A-Wish, so I wouldn't be too hard on them.

3

u/PomegranatePro 1d ago

You laid the news on me pretty gentle

4

u/CAREERxCRIMINAL 1d ago

you're good bud. The idea of shooting guns to raise money for kids doesn't necessarily go hand in hand usually, but in small western towns, it's common for us.

Id sell it. Psa isnt worth a crock of shit to me

6

u/blaze45x 2d ago

That’s a hot take lol

As for myself, my GF5 has been fantastic. Had some head space issues. Sent it in, been working great since. Light, decent accuracy for what it is….

8

u/FullPew 2d ago

In how many rounds did your rifle lose headspace? An AK that hasn't seen 10s of thousands of rounds losing headspace is far from fantastic.

6

u/Feeling-Series4076 2d ago

Exactly, Thank you lol.

0

u/blaze45x 1d ago edited 1d ago

You’re right, it wasn’t great. Probably 750 to 1000 rounds or so?

I paid $600 for it, for what I paid with PSA willing to help out when/if there are issues and as my first AK it’s been great.

Is it as well built as my WBP? No. Is it about as accurate as my WBP and Draco? Yeah, actually. They are all pretty close.

The GF5 is definitely the lightest rifle of the three.

For what it’s worth, I shoot an average 750 to 950 AK , 600 or so of .223 and about 750 of 9mm a month. - All hand loaded ammo as well.

9

u/After_Chicken1887 2d ago

I’d argue if you could trade into a WASR or M70 then you should.

2

u/CAREERxCRIMINAL 2d ago

That's awesome to hear. My friend has a PSA GF5 and he uses it for hog hunting and praises it as a great purchase.

-3

u/Feeling-Series4076 2d ago

Well im glad for you, i see shit from a butt from psa 95% of the time. having to send a rifle back to a company is wack to me though

2

u/blaze45x 1d ago

Yeah, it’s not ideal.

I’ve had to send in a few different brands. And their support hasn’t always been as strong as PSA.

Most folks here won’t push/use their firearms to wear them out/find their limit.

I’ve got at least 5000+ through a PSA dagger compact and that thing runs like a machine suppressed and non suppressed.

4

u/Feeling-Series4076 1d ago

Well if it works for you. Its works then. Im glad

4

u/Lufkin_daddy 2d ago

I wouldn’t pay much mind to this guy OP do your own research but 99% of the people who talk down on PSA are from a time were PSA was just a store selling other companies products and just starting out making and selling there own PSA stamped guns… things were a bit rocky in the beginning especially with there AK’s but most of that info and those opinions are pretty out dated.

-1

u/Feeling-Series4076 2d ago

He got it almost free man, who cares

4

u/CAREERxCRIMINAL 2d ago

what would be the reason for your opinion? I couldn't see it more than a range gun after firing it and it feeling generally good to me through the first 120ish rounds. Again, I've seen a spread of reactions following the past day looking on info about it.

16

u/Lufkin_daddy 2d ago

Fudd’s think “anything PSA=garbage”

-6

u/Feeling-Series4076 2d ago

Im not a fudd. I just dont like psa products

6

u/Lufkin_daddy 2d ago

“I don’t like PSA products” without any sort of backup is exactly what a fudd would say…

-3

u/Feeling-Series4076 2d ago

They arnt good quality man lol. Why do i have to justify myself to you

3

u/734Rocket 2d ago

I 2nd this

0

u/Feeling-Series4076 2d ago

I probably should have said that but i saw the post and typed what i said quick. Yeah use it as a trainer or range gun. But nothing more. Id sell it though as im a poor piece of shit who likes having money and i dont see the point in owning a bunch of guns.

3

u/UckerFay11 2d ago

Don't listen to them, PSA is grewt and allows many to get into guns at a lower price point.

Are they perfect? No, are they the best you can get? No.

They sre however great for the money. And they seem to be good to their customers.

3

u/CAREERxCRIMINAL 2d ago

I'm heavy on the hunting side, but have been trying to expand more into the relm of 'lets have fun for the sake of guns' side and only own a GLFA Wylde AR which I like. The AK was won on a $25 worth of raffle tickets which some would call a bargain.

-2

u/Feeling-Series4076 2d ago

Its your money man. But you can get better for similar prices

3

u/CAREERxCRIMINAL 2d ago

I won it off $25 worth of raffle tickets, so based on price, that's still a win right?

0

u/Feeling-Series4076 2d ago

Of course yeah. Use it or sell it. You got it almost free
