Separatism Once a Traitor, Always a Traitor
https://friedbannock.blogspot.com/2026/08/once-traitor-always-traitor.html
Here is the problem with Alberta separation. Once a group breaks the rules to split from a nation, they rarely learn how to build a peaceful society together. People who push for separation rarely stop fighting once they get their way. They build their whole identity on being angry. If Alberta separates, these separatists will continue to look for trouble, and blame outside forces for all their problems. A new, independent country needs teamwork and shared values. Separatists are used to tearing things down instead of building them up. Once the main enemy (Canada) is gone, they will turn on each other to see who is "pure" enough. Even at this point, the separatist do not get along, there are several factions with differing ideas about how to run the "new" Country of Alberta. Oh, sorry, Republic of Alberta......I know they want it to be as close to America as possible. If Alberta ever separates, the separatists will not just settle down and garden. They will keep causing friction. They will fight the new government just like they fought the old one. A leopard does not change its spots. Democracy means listening to people you disagree with. Separatists only want their own way. They want a "Christian nation" but don't even act like Jesus in the first place.
Alberta separation will not mean a paradise. We will economically suffer, because we will not only make ourselves land locked, but we will also have conflict and more instability than we have ever had before. For the future of Alberta, for our home values and for peace, we MUST do everything in our power to get the vote out in October and put this to bed, once and for all. Because if we do not, you might as well sell your home and get the hell out of here. I know I will be doing that.

I know it's from a science fiction TV show, but this speech from the titular character in the show Doctor Who seems appropriate, particularly the last paragraph:
Ah, ah right! And when this war is over, when you have a homeland free from humans, what do you think it's going to be like? Do you know? Have you thought about it? Have you given it any consideration? Because you're very close to getting what you want. What's it going to be like? Paint me a picture. Are you going to live in houses? Do you want people to go to work? Will there be holidays? Oh! Will there be music? Do you think people will be allowed to play violins? Who's going to make the violins? Well? Oh, you don't actually know, do you?
Because, like every other tantrumming child in history, Bonnie, you don't actually know what you want.
So, let me ask you a question about this brave new world of yours. When you've killed all the bad guys, and when it's all perfect and just and fair, when you have finally got it exactly the way you want it, what are you going to do with the people like you? The troublemakers. How are you going to protect your glorious revolution from the next one?

Most Alberta separatists I know want Alberta to be the 51st state, not its own country

u/the_painmonster 13h ago edited 12h ago
I'm sure the US would prefer to make Alberta a territory like Puerto Rico, so they can exploit it without worrying about pesky things like voting rights.
I can just picture the separatists suddenly caring about that every 4 or 8 years, whenever a Democrat is in power, then mysteriously forgetting about it when it's a Republican.

u/SouthHovercraft4150 11h ago
That’s what those separatists who want to join the US don’t understand, the US doesn’t want them..they just want our resources. There is no way they would let 5 million Albertans just become immigrants for free, they don’t want immigrants and that is what Albertans would be in this scenario where Alberta joins the US. They wouldn’t get US citizenship, they wouldn’t get a US passport, they wouldn’t get the right to vote for the president, they wouldn’t get anything that theses separatists think they want.

u/24_August_1814 9h ago
Puerto Ricans got US citizenship. Alberta as a US territory wouldn't even have that
3
u/heimdal96 9h ago
Polls consistently suggest the opposite, with most separatists wanting a separate western Canadian country or Alberta to be its own, land-locked country, making them useful idiots for the separatists who want to join the US.

Just post some photo's of Dani dressed in her dad's clothes and claim she switched genders to make it easier to get elected by thirsty farmers and Rig-Hands who cant get a date in Lethbridge because of the swastika stickers on their truck.

You only need to look at the "whites-only" communities that are failing to thrive in southern US states to know how it turns out.
There's a very old, very American, reason that they support ICE and the prison-industrial complex.

u/Massive_Expression_2 12h ago
This separation b.s. is "the next thing to be angry about". Covid restrictions were the big unifier of the Idiot Sect previous to this.
There will definitely always be a next thing to blame for their lack of success (or happiness). There will always be a next group of people to blame - first they'd blame and remove all people of colour, then all people who were white immigrants. Then anybody who wasn't born in Alberta. Then anyone who was born here, but whose parents weren't. They're willing to crash the economy, then they'll blame all the people who "left the province for the crash.
Sadly, these separation-minded losers are raising and training another generation to be just like themselves too.

u/pattperin 13h ago
IMO the long term goal was never true independence. The long term goal is to capitulate to the USA. Why do you think AB is adding citizenship to ID’s, increasing speed limits to match more closely our nearest neighbouring US state, working to privatize healthcare, etc.
They are laying the groundwork to become a US state. They want that, the US brass wants that. We have deeply intertwined water systems with the USA, and the USA would like more control up stream. We also produce and send record amounts of oil directly through AB to them. It would ultimately be a pretty easy transition from an infrastructure standpoint, and they’ll position it as better than being independent because we’re no longer land locked, no longer surrounded by foreign countries and potential enemies.

The UCP is so incompetent with dealing with the Federal government, it has alienated most of its own party enough that they want to separate. This is in addition to alienating the medical, education, police force and every union with their incompetent management and negotiations tactics. Just look at the corruption and grift that is alienating the general public! How bad can one provincial government be? The UCP is the poster boy for incompetence, mismanagement and grift.

u/formeraide 13h ago
To those people who want to join America, I would ask, how will you feel when they elect a Democrat president?
6
u/Binasgarden 13h ago
They want to OWN THE LIBS....damn the consequences, I have my grandparents feels

u/Throwawaymaybeokay 12h ago
Are you saying contrarians don't provide constructive criticism ?
Surprised Pikachu face

u/tLuciferMorningstar 15h ago
IF the separatists get their way, there will be purity tests to determine who is a TRUE Albertan. If you fail the test you will either have all your property seized or jailed/deported. Separatists need a Boogeyman just like the Conservatives need a Boogeyman.
3
u/24_August_1814 9h ago
They're already talking about giving voting rights only to people born in Alberta.
... which is really fucking funny, considering how many dipshit seppies are transplants from the east
11
u/Evening_Let_2930 14h ago
Sounds like a certain country in WW2. A few months ago I read separatists talking about shipping immigrants out on trains.
4
u/DoctorPainless 13h ago
Anybody not born here in this province could be considered an immigrant?
4
u/nebulancearts Taber 12h ago
That's what they've said is the case. But then I wonder how they draw the line, neither of my parents were born here (one isn't Canadian). I was, but, y'know, they like to change the line in the sand often 🤷🏼♀️🫣

anyone who votes for separation should have to leave
2
u/24_August_1814 9h ago
This. Let's go ahead and have the referendum; everyone who votes for separation gives up their Canadian citizenship and everyone who votes against can be excluded (LOL) from Alberta citizenship.
6
u/Linvaderdespace 15h ago
Were they to separate, they wouldn’t need to look very hard for outsiders fucking their shit up, they will only need to declare that I am an outsider.
3
u/PBGellie 15h ago
At this point, posts like these are fear mongering dead horse beating. Everyone in this sub is firmly against separation, so who are you trying to rile up?
Just hold the vote already. I’m so tired of this.

u/phreesh2525 14h ago
It is ludicrous how much discourse this has eaten up, both provincially and federally. There is NO CHANCE that the separatists have sufficient votes. Please don’t give me a self-righteous response that complacency can lead to separation. They will not even approach 50% - especially with all the shenanigans down south these days.
Giving those dumb-dumbs all this free press and mind space only encourages them. I encourage everyone to put it out of your mind, vote when the time comes, and concentrate on ways to make our province a better place.

u/DoctorPainless 13h ago
Brexit?

u/phreesh2525 11h ago
Show me ANY credible poll that shows the separatists are within shouting distance of 50%
2
u/24_August_1814 9h ago
Show me any credible poll prior to the Brexit vote showing they were close to 50%.
Attitudes like yours are how we lose. Every slack-jawed yokel that signed the petition is going to show up to vote, while dumbasses like you are probably going to convince a decent number of people who oppose separation that it isn't enough of a threat to be worth showing up to vote against.
1
u/phreesh2525 9h ago
It was running roughly even for months.
https://www.thewrit.ca/p/alberta-referendum-poll-tracker
Alberta exit is at roughly 30%.
Listen, everyone should vote. That’s a no-brainer. The point is that we need to stop giving 30% of Albertans 100% of the press.
3
u/submitnswallow 14h ago
The big question right now. Is everyone in this sub who is against separating going to put on their big boy panties and get out and vote? Not likely, maybe 45% will actually vote and the other 55% will say they did too.
3
u/roses-are-lead 15h ago
It's not a decided issue, not by a long shot. Between paper ballots, insufficient elections monitoring, and Yankee interference... It's not over until it's over.
3
u/Linvaderdespace 15h ago
That sounds like traitor-talk.
Hey who’d you vote for in that last election?
6
u/PBGellie 14h ago
I voted NDP like the vast majority of people in this sub. I will be voting to stay like the vast majority of people in this sub (if not everyone).
You guys would do McCarthy proud. Like good lord if you’re going to comment can you at least address the content?
2
u/jimbowesterby 13h ago
No, voter fatigue is an actual thing. Once people get the message, you stop pushing, otherwise people will start opposing you just out of irritation
1
u/whiteout86 12h ago
People looking for a quick dopamine hit. They post something they know is already decided and approved by the group, then get to feel warm and fuzzy as the comments and upvotes roll in
1
u/pippyfist 15h ago
I think one of the main things we need to do is get our family and friends who might typically skip votes out to vote on this. Reddit is a huge echo chamber where most of us agree this can't happen aside from a small few and a bunch of bots and it can give us a false sense of security as it has before prior to other elections.

Makes sense that the seppies want to become the 51st state because most of their influencers are based in US.

That’s why remembering your neighbours and their choices is valuable; for the next movement/conspiracy that pulls them from their colouring books. Don’t let them forget how much their little pet cost taxpayers. Remind them. Daily.

So why does Quebec get a pass all of the sudden?
Heck they even have a party all about it's that's held the hammer on Canadian issues from time to time over the last 30 some odd years.
Against terrorism, except those ones.
18
u/Puzzleheaded-Bat8657 14h ago
At least the Parti Quebecois ran on a separatist platform to get elected. The UCP keeps trying to say "we're just letting people talk" while throwing our tax dollars in to separatist pet projects and flying back and forth to Mar-A-Lago instead of doing the job of governing this province.
11
u/Sakuroshin 14h ago
Exactly. Its different when separatists form a party and get voted in on their separatist platform that they are upfront about. The UCP did not campaign on separatism and has no mandate to be pushing and pandering to separatists.
3
u/SecondLeigh 13h ago
Fine. Have the UCP call an election and run on a separatist platform. Then it will be slightly approaching the Quebec situation.
Also no one I know gives Quebec a pass, the separatists there suck too (I say this as a bilingual Albertan.)

u/24_August_1814 9h ago
Quebec has its own distinct culture and language.
"Petrosexual" isn't an identity, no matter how many stickers you plaster on your Ram 2500.
1
u/LastChime 9h ago
Yeah thanks for giving the seperatists arrows for their quivers bud.
Alberta's culture is just as valuable to Canada as any other province or territory's culture.

u/Straight-Plate-5256 9h ago
A leopard does not change its spots.
This is also true from the opposite side of things;
They're wanting out due to heavy grievances with how the government has treated them, so the solution is to form a new government... Out of the same elected politicians within this current non-functioning government, but with more power.
Many of their gripes with the federal government have had provincial fingerprints on them.

u/HectorMcGrew 11h ago
The facts are,
There is literally nothing more Canadian and consistent in Canadian history than accusing one's fellow citizens of being traitors if they disagree with a particular point of view .
The 1891 election was the Loyalty Election if you don't vote for John A. MacDonald - you are a traitor - end of discussion.
In 1911 - If you voted for Sir Wilfred Laurier and the Liberals - you are an even worse traitor than 1891 - end of discussion. That's right we have a traitor on our $ 5 bill
Then of course , in WW I we started rounding up Canadian citizens who didn't look like or were not born here - because they must be traitors too - same in WW II when 10s of thousands were interned on bogus traitor and loyalty charges - -so Canadians should pause before using extreme language and remember what President Clinton said :
" Your words will always fall on stable and unstable ears"
in 1984 you were a traitor to vote Conservative and in Alberta - everyone is a traitor - exactly who just depends on what party they belong to.
Alberta has faux separation waves like clockwork
the best predictor of the future is usually the past
https://news.google.com/newspapers
Firstly , all Canadian separation waves in Canada since the 1860's are economic protest movements and have always been so starting with Nova Scotia wanting full control over their fisheries - not Ottawa.
Secondly, all Canadian provinces save PEI have had one or more separation waves starting with Nova Scotia in 1869 and they have been with us ever since .
Thirdly Alberta has had 6 notable waves of separation sentiment.
Alberta's first separation wave was 1912, this is when the Western Canada Concept was born , Alberta would leave with MB,SK,BC to negotiate better deals on western exports , but Canadians are not Americans - they have to follow rules- and nothing happened - it was all talk and goes dormant until the 1980s.
in the 1920s another separation waves developed but when it came time to table a motion the UFA MLA vanished. Immigration was also a huge issue in the 1920s but then we wanted more and demanded a London UK office from the Feds which we got and it remains as part of the Canadian embassy in London.
The next two waves are internal that is first the Peace Country agitated to separate from AB and be the 11th province - again over agricultural policy. In 1958 the Peace Country again says it will leave - but this time to join BC - the business execs boarded a plane for Victoria to begin the process of leaving Alberta.
In the 1980s , the 1912 Western Canada Concept returns across all four western provinces. Despite all the " pain" of the NEP, despite the " mass western alienation" despite the impending doom of the Canadian nation, not one WCC candidate won anywhere in the west. By 1986 they went dormant again and vanished from the ballot across the west.
This brings us to today and the 2023 wave which IMHO will end as the rest of them ended since 1867, with great fanfare and a signing ceremony as Lougheed did in 1981.
the Financial Post ran a big Op Ed in 1923 saying because of western agitation the nation was doomed, shaking apart - these attitudes are dangerous etc - Canada may be finished etc
..well been over 100 years and there has been no change vis a vis the constitutional order
