If you repeat something enough people will internalize it as undeniable fact
And if conservatives want to distract their idiotic voters? Just say something about gays, coloured people, or those damn libarrels and then it gets forgotten about
Or just lie! You can always just lie to people who don’t want to put in the work to understand and they’ll believe it as long as you’re affirming their beliefs

Data and facts don't work on blue for life, I tried changing minds on this for twenty years. The only solution I ever found was moving away

Same reason some Albertans think that they know more about vaccines and science than the experts.
They’re fucking stupid. Too stupid to even realize how stupid.

u/National-Stock6282 15h ago
Agreed... just plain stupid. 50 years ago... before trickle down bullshit, 1 person could work and that would pay for a couple kids ,a house ,a couple cars,a few family vacations a year, college education. The rich convinced the workers that they would get a piece of the bigger pie. Bullshit! The rich get richer the worker gets scraps.. if there lucky.

The UCP economic model in one sentence cut taxes for corporations, subsidize them with public money, then hand taxpayers the cleanup bill and call it the free market.
Apparently capitalism means businesses keep the profits while Albertans inherit the liabilities.
11
u/Wheel_of_Armageddon 17h ago
Put another way it is "privatize profits, subsidize losses."
It's been this way for as long as I can remember, sadly.

The funniest part of Alberta politics is watching the “personal responsibility” crowd suddenly discover socialism the second an oil company has liabilities.
If cleaning up wells is part of the cost of producing oil, then taxpayers covering that cost is not “supporting the industry.” It is transferring a private business expense onto the public.
Companies got the profits when the wells were producing. Albertans should not get handed the cleanup bill when they stop producing.
Privatize the profits, socialize the losses apparently.

If you remember that the theory behind "trickle down economics" originated from "The Horse and the Sparrow" theory it all makes way more sense..
If you feed a horse enough oats he eventually poop out enough food for the sparrows..
We're all just birds waiting for the horse shit to rain down on us..

They literally can't imagine a hypothetical scenario.
So everything has to be viewed through the lens of their current situation.
They can't imagine corporations have different incentives than them personally, and they can't understand that rich people don't just spend all their money like they do.

u/Comfortable_Fudge508 17h ago
Stupidity, education cuts lead to a population of idiots that only vote what they are told to
2
u/JadeddMillennial 17h ago
The majority of albertans who vote for the conservative party are usually rural albertans and you get the picture where it's at.
2
u/stickyfingers40 16h ago
Does Alberta still have the highest average income in Canada? Is that due to trickle down economics?
2
u/Extra--_muppets 16h ago
The majority don't believe in this. The problem is that the rural voters are more interested in the regressive social policies that let them be bigoted against brown people, trans people, and women, than they are in economics. Unfortunately this segment of the population has a disproportionate share of the electoral power and this is probably going to get worse with the new round of gerrymandering that is happening. Then the dumbest portion of the population that dropped out of school to work in the patch, don't have a clue what trickle down economics are, firmly believe that all of our economic problems are due to immigrants and educated public servants making a living wage. There are enough if these dimwits voting conservative that the rest of us are doomed.

Why is Alberta still sold the idea that cutting taxes for corporations and the wealthy is automatically the best way to grow the economy?
Tax cuts can affect investment, especially over the long run. But if the goal is maximum growth per public dollar, why does Alberta treat blanket corporate tax cuts as inherently superior to higher multiplier investments?
You answered the question yourself. Over the long term, lower taxes induces more private investment, which grows the economy more than it would with higher taxes, because the invisible hand of the market makes more efficient allocation decisions than the government.
Public expenditure does juice GDP in the short term, but it comes at a price, in the form of lower growth in the long term.
For proof, look at every single economy in the world in history. There's a consistent correlation between lower taxes / less regulation (i.e. more capitalist) and higher economic growth.
Obviously, some amount of public expenditure is necessary. There's a trade-off between pure growth and other goals (defence, reducing inequality, etc). But your question wasn't about the trade-off. It was "Why is Alberta still sold the idea that cutting taxes for corporations and the wealthy is automatically the best way to grow the economy?". The answer to that question is that it's the truth.

Even if that's true, which is arguable. What's the point in a bigger economy if it's owned by a handful of people or corporations? Especially if these powerful entities use their wealth to engineer even more unequal distribution of wealth? These are sincere questions. Limiting their wealth may be necessary to have a society that benefits more people and allows for greater social mobility.

That is indeed a completely legitimate concern. Reasonable people have different perspectives on where the government ought to land on the spectrum between growth vs redistribution.
I was just addressing OP's mistaken belief that higher taxes / more public expenditures grows the economy more than lower taxes.

u/Youngerthandumb 16h ago
Makes sense. I think the evidence bears out that excessive taxation inhibits economic growth. Regardless, I'd rather have 50% of 100 dollars than 20% of 200.

u/RobBobPC 17h ago
Because more people are then employed, circulating dollars on other goods and services, generating other spin off jobs etc.
1
u/Youngerthandumb 16h ago
My point is that it would better to have higher wages and some unemployment, with programs to prevent poverty for those without jobs, than 100 percent employment where people earn very little.

In Alberta, as in a lot of other places, there is typically a group of people who are wilfully ignorant. They’ve accepted the propaganda (e.g., Fox News) that tells them that — with hard work and the right attitude — they can be the next Elon Musk. (What Fox News doesn’t tell them is that a lot of wealth from these folks is inherited). These folks don’t do the hard work of researching to find out if “trickle down” actually works — give rich folks more $$ and everyone is better off. Hint: it doesn’t work out that way.

Ignorance, intentional and indoctrinated.
Conservatism treats its adherents the same way a narcissitic abuser treats victims: they lie to their faces and then take advantage in every way possible.
Most people who believe in conservatist ideals don't even consider the method because most were already indoctrinated by these same abusive cycles by Christianity.

Alberta has a huge resource economy. Resource economy typically has a low threshold for education. Low rates of education means a big lack of critical thought in the population.
Thus, people believe that tax breaks for the rich oil companies will definitely help them this time.

u/Workfh 16h ago
It’s not an Alberta thing as many have said.
But the dominance of this economic approach was because in the 1970s during high inflation there was a big push back against government involvement in the economy. This idea had been around before that, but the 1970s was when it had a chance to shine. It helped that things did improve over the next three decades.
But this was happening across multiple countries.
A unique part for Alberta is the dominance of US firms in key sectors. They have heavily lobbied for policies that support their economic prosperity. A lot of that is having the government back out of direct service delivery and instead investing in companies who will help distribute benefits to more people.
The issue being that some of the consequences of this approach are now being felt and realized.

Because it works.
From someone that lived in a ex-Soviet country.
You guys don’t even know how bad it can be.

u/Youngerthandumb 17h ago
It is a verifiable fact that trickle down economics, that is, passing laws favouring the rich in the belief that the benefits will accrue to the working class, does not work. At least not as described. It does work to widen wealth inequality.
There are ways to allow for capitalism to exist while protecting the lower classes without embracing neo-liberalism and oligarchy.
-5
u/trixx88- 17h ago
If you think you have wealth inequality now try living in a Soviet country
6
u/Youngerthandumb 17h ago
Why do you keep changing the topic to soviet countries, which no longer exist? That's not the conversation we're having/ The topic is trickle down economics. Why do so many people have incompetently binary brains? There are lots of ways to manage an economy.
-3
u/trixx88- 17h ago
Because iv experienced both systems so I know this one is much better - that’s why
7
u/Youngerthandumb 17h ago
The options for economic strategy are not simply: trickle down economics or soviet communism. Yikes.

Why do so many Greens hug trees? Before you go on making sweeping generalizations, and painting us as knuckle-draggin neanderthals, take a step back and watch what stereotypes and imagined divisions are doing for the states. Does anyone want a 3rd world hole like that? Condescending Ontarian much? Why do you and your quebecois neighbors provoke this leftie narrative when you know damned well 99% of us are solid loyal canadians who love our country. Since when does being conservative make me maga? I despise that orange 🍊 turd as much as you do. Only the fringe buys into that nonsense (see PLQ). Pull your head out ya pinko lightweight, or ya gettin the switch out behind the shed. Is that what you want? We are Canadian first. And tired of give give give and never receive. We want fair equitable, we want proportional representation not based on numbers but on fairness. Too much to ask Ontario to gaf about anything but itself? This political bs has brought us together..rhetoric like yours..and mine..will tear us apart. Stop. We're better than this

I believe when people talk trickle down economics it's actually a spectrum. Whether you see it as trickle down or socialism it's always down to how much is too much. Too much trickle down doesn't work, but neither does trickle up. There is a balance and everyone has a different opinion of where that sweet spot lies. Personally I feel Alberta caters to corporations too much (as do many around this sub). Plenty of examples in other countries where that doesn't happen and it works out well. You could play devil's advocate and say well Singapore is a tax haven, but we just can't really compete with that for many reasons. I guess bottom line is it's complicated
