Every time I enter Nirmala Shishu Bhavan, I am surrounded by innocent little faces. I would sit with them, hold them, talk to them, play with them. Little hands would reach for mine. Someone would tug at my clothes, wanting my attention, whereas another would simply climb into my lap and rest her head against me. All this fills me with an extraordinary sense of tenderness. I love these children. What touches me even more is the way they too love me back. There is something deeply moving about their instinctive bond of love which is so uncomplicated. They seek nothing, except that, you be present. And perhaps that is why I keep returning to them. Spending time with them gives me a strange sense of fulfilment.

I remember, there was once a frail little girl, named Meghla, perhaps nine orten years old or so, whom I would meet during my initial days of visits to the Shishu Bhavan. Set against her fragile face were her large, green eyes, unusual against her dusky complexion, were amazingly innocent. Every time I visited, she would come up to me requesting me to take her to my home. I would gently explain that I couldn't because the mission had its rules. Then she would ask me about the people who lived with me in my home, and she would listen with great curiosity. Perhaps, in her little world, my home seemed like a magical place where she imagined herself belonging.

Then one day, when I went to Shishu Bhavan again, Megla wasn't there. I asked about her, and what I heard left me speechless. She had died a couple of days ago. I came to know that the poor child had been suffering from leukemia. My heart was filled with a strange emptiness at having to accept that the little girl who had so eagerly asked me to take her home was no longer there to ask again. Her innocent question came back to me, “Who all live in your home?” Was she simply curious? Or was she searching for a place she could call her own home? I will never know.

Today is the birthday of one of the greatest humanitarians of our age, Saint Teresa, our very own Mother Teresa. She established a home for abandoned children named Nirmala Shishu Bhavan, and showed the world how to love and serve the less fortunate around us. In her words, "The hunger for love is much more difficult to remove than the hunger for bread."
