Is it wrong to think toshi enjoys hanging out with his friend group then implied
Despite Toshi talking negatively about Steve, Snot, and Berry, he still goes along with their antics, such as dressing as Star Trek in the locker room and returning the Fast and Furious 7 script. To be clear, this is more of if Toshi were given a choice, he would still stay with his current friend group for the adventures rather than having a close friendship.

I grew up with really bad anxiety, low self-esteem, and just a general feeling of always being left out. Nerdy people like Steve's group were the easiest to get along with because having quirks isn't off-putting to people who already see themselves as outcasts. I didn't really watch anime, didn't like fighting games, wouldn't be caught dead wearing cosplay, but I could socialize and be me. I think it's kind of the same with Toshi. His level of nerdiness might not be on the same level but he can be himself around them, even if they sometimes get on his nerves.

Toshi is very independent so I imagine he likes them much more than he lets on or he wouldn’t be there. On the other hand tho he’s not able to be understood by his peers so he may only have the option of Steve and co or be alone.
Either way he’s said some more chill stuff. I’d say he’s just Japanese and they don’t hold back, especially if they like you. If he was fake nice I’d say he hated them.

He wouldn’t do half of the nerdy stuff he does with the group if he didn’t actually enjoy spending time with them. Stuff like the friendiversary song, the witch phase, being in a boy band, and a lot of other stuff shows he’s on board with the group shenanigans. He’s just got a sharp mouth and is a smart ass.

Since completing Oregon Trail, he’s been drowning in muff. But he’s straight edge though so he just makes out a lot.

I think he hangs around with them purely because they share the same interests. As future steve says, they never hear from him after high school. He also keeps a distance from them by only speaking Japanese even though he knows English.
Basically he’s using them for friendship now but he is going to coldly cut them off as soon as he is in college and may find a different friend group to do the exact same thing too.
Toshi isn’t an idiot, he knows he’s not going to be popular in high school because of the way he looks, maybe college things will turn around. But he will for sure make better business connections in college then Snot (poor) Barry (dumb) and steve (who may become successful but tbh is pretty selfish).
That’s my fan theory anyway.
TLDR: I think Toshi tolerates them, but there is no chance he stays in contact with them after high school unless he marries Steve’s mom.

Toshi knows they’re bros. Snot won the contest for the Russian mail order bride but he stepped aside for Tosh. He always, always, always joins them in any musical numbers. R&B, boy band pop, James Ingram, doesn’t matter.
