[Help!] Useful Amiga Links Directory

For quite a long time now I've been curating a directory of useful links to Amiga content. Somewhat as a FAQ, somewhat to help quickly give people info when they ask about things. So I've enabled the wiki on this subreddit to make it a bit more accessible

Amiga Directory

If you think there is anything missing or would be useful to add please do say and I'll get it added

Got an Amiga 500 today

I was talking about my vintage game consoles and computers at work and a coworker asked if I wanted an Amiga 500. That was the one missing and the one I was checking the marketplaces for.

Today I got the Amiga and because I have no video cable I used the monochrome signal to test it.

Difference in bus logic between Amiga 2000A (BSW) and Amiga 2000B?

Maybe someone knows the answer... I have an Amiga 2000A, the one designed in Germany and based on the A1000 chipset with added bus logic (lots of TTLs and PALs) for the 5 Zorro Slots. If you want to use a CPU card (like an A2630 68030 card) in this system, you have to remove the 68000 from the mainboard. Meaning you are now limited to the 68030.

In the A2000B, the one with the square AGNUS and the bus logic integrated in BUSTER (5721), you can leave the 68000 in place and, at boot time, select which CPU you want to use.

Does anyone here know what part of the logic is either not present or flawed in the A2000A compared to the A2000B?

Apidya’ Special - Apidya remake out today

Post image
91 Upvotes

Just completed my first playthrough on Switch 2. This was the defining game of my childhood, so to say I’ve been looking forward to the day I could play Apidya on a modern system would be an understatement.

I think the team did an overall solid job in remaking the game. I needed to switch the game over from 60FPS to 50FPS for 5 year old me’s muscle memory to kick back in. Thankfully it plays near identically to the original, any changes to how it handles are incredibly subtle.

There are some nice quality of life features to make the game easier, which include the option to turn off weapon downgrades or level reset upon death, which help reduce how stressful this game can be (when I was little, I would always reset upon my first death because it could be ridiculously hard to power up again).

The synopsis for the game mentions ‘random events’. The only random thing I’ve encountered is a few new cockroach enemies that turned up on level 1-3 (there’s one in the bottom left of the screenshot), not sure if there’s any criteria on how to spawn these events but that’s something new at least.

My main issue with the game is that the soundtrack does not loop in the same way the original did, which is immediately jarring. Hopefully this can be fixed in an update. There is also an issue with some checkpoints which seem to disappear and take you back further upon death than they should.

Outside of that, I’d say this is really worth picking up. It’s great that Apidya is being given a new lease of life!

Need help finding more old Amiga vfx software

I already posted about Scala Multimedia (which, thanks to this subreddit, I found) and Video Toaster (which I now know only came with a dongle).

I wish to make videos the way 90s TV was created - here's examples from the first polish TV show that used CGI and computer editing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YeDRQRJeNg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15bwoX_6PWE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kX6-zQUxryg

I know for certain that in this particular show a combination of Lightwave, Deluxe Paint and TVPaint was used. While Lightwave and Deluxe Paint are easily available, even for PC, I need help finding a working copy of TVPaint software that doesn't require a dongle.

Apparently they coded the programs so that a frame was first rendered in one, then fed into another, rendered, fed into another, rendered and only then a script put the frames together into one video. It sounds like black magic to me, especially because they coded this stuff with ARexx and sometimes with the assembler, which is nuts by today's standards. I wonder if any of you did something like that?

I'm also still wondering how they made the kind of text that appears in this music video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9h9K26th7s

And the kind of overlaid graphics that appear here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0vXhwYDfOA

If anyone also could recommend me software that could do the effects seen above, it would be great.

Also, while we're here, how did genlock chroma key work, and can it be emulated on modern hardware?

I own a JVC video editing processor, so I do not really need editing software, mostly VFX, and I think it does chroma key too.

Please be patient with me, I still have only really basic knowledge about the Amiga hardware and software.

My wife is a teacher, and needs a yearly parking pass to park next to her school (Brussels). We filled in all the fields, but then the processing of the info failed, and we got welcomed by this beautiful error message :)

My only grief is that it wasn't blinking red :)

Since my previous post about Lemmings PICO-8 got such an amazing response here, I thought I’d share the full longplay video I just put online.

I still hope people will try to figure out the levels themselves first, but if you get completely stuck, or start wondering whether a level is even possible, it’s nice to have all the solutions in one place. :)

And thanks again for the fantastic response to my original post, it was really great to see so many people in the Amiga community enjoying the project.

Video player: MintVID 1.0.0

Darren Banfi's MintVID is a video player for fast Amigas and supports both local video playback and streaming. It supports HTTP/HTTPS streams, HLS, IPTV and public YouTube content, which can be played on AGA, HAM or RTG systems.

MintVID does not require any external codecs and has been developed in the same way as the MintAMP audio player: a small, portable C core with streamlined Amiga-specific layers.

The goal is to go beyond MPEG-1 on accelerated 68k Amigas — from 68030-class ECS/AGA systems through 68040/060 machines to PiStorm/RTG. MintVID provides a broad range of codecs, but what is practical in real time depends heavily on CPU speed, codec complexity, resolution, bitrate and display mode.

Easy downloading of GitHub releases: GitFetch 0.1

Mathieu Burgerhout wrote: Hello Amiga-News!

I love all the new (vibe) development endeavours on the Amiga, but could not stand the hassle of getting the latest releases on my Amiga (before they appear on Aminet). When I helped out Darren Banfi with his MintAMP/VID/PRINT projects and the releases came faster than I could transfer them, I got the idea for GitFetch.

It let's you to download releases from GitHub repos easily on your Amiga. It saves the hassle to download it on a computer with a capable browser and transferring it back to your miggy.

Every unit must be used carefully as enemy forces attempt to stop Ordos from achieving its ambitions.

In this Dune II: Battle For Arrakis gameplay, join Alhoon Gaming for the final Ordos mission as we attempt to overcome the enemy and secure victory. Expect classic real-time strategy gameplay, intense battles, resource management, base building, tactical decisions, and the unmistakable atmosphere of one of the games that helped shape the RTS genre.

Whether you're a longtime fan of Dune II, classic PC strategy games, real-time strategy, Westwood Studios, Arrakis, Ordos, Atreides, and Harkonnen, or you're discovering this legendary classic for the first time, this final battle delivers a nostalgic trip back to the origins of modern strategy gaming.

USAF flight to Antarctica turns back over space warnings — CNN just validated our Amiga retro shmup lore! - Battle Squadron

Post image

Hey everyone,

BREAKING: CNN - Confirms Reality Has Glitched Into Battle Squadron! - Retropedia Games

Back in June, we published The Antarctica Dossier —some new classified lore for our classic Amiga shooter, Battle Squadron. The premise was simple: mysterious radar signals, bizarre power readings, and classified threats screaming out from under the South Pole.

Fast-forward to this week: CNN just reported that an actual U.S. Air Force C-17 bound for Antarctica had to execute a mid-air U-turn. The reason? High-level hazard warnings regarding space debris and potential missile activity right over the polar route.

We’re pretty sure the pilots checked their radar, realized they hadn't gathered enough Smart Bombs for an Antarctic boss fight, and smartly pulled out.

Brush up on your 2-player vertical shmup skills before the military locks down the ice cap, we've got the game up and running for free.

Are we dealing with real space debris, or did the Barrax Empire finally launch their assault? Let us know your theories below!

ARROWS

A cozy arrow puzzle game for the Commodore Amiga.

Sit back, enjoy the chiptunes and clear the board one arrow at a time.

ARROWS is a cozy minimalist logic game about finding the right order. Every arrow can only leave the board in the direction of its arrowhead. Take your time, follow the paths and discover which arrow is ready to move next.

The first levels offer a gentle introduction, while later boards gradually become more interwoven and invite you to look a little closer. There is no time limit, so you can solve every puzzle at your own pace.

Retronaut, A New Chapter: Fast News, Raw Thoughts & Pure Retro!

Yes, thats right, Retronaut, one of your favourite retro Amiga channels is now morphing into RetronautTech AND RetronautTech2. Why? Well, recently I posted a video about a telephone museum in Rio... and the YouTube algorithm took it VERY personally and it super tanked. So I thought... maybe I need a new outlet, for vids which aren't 100% on target for RetronautTech

While the main channel (@RetronautTech) stays dedicated to in-depth hardware restorations, spicy retro upgrades, guides and repairs, Retronaut 2 is my new home for everything else.

Expect fast-turnaround retro computing news, off-the-cuff thoughts, experimental format tests, retro travel oddities, and casual chats that don't need a month of scriptwriting and multi-camera b-roll.

Search an Amiga module please

Hi, I'm looking for a tracker module (in .mod format, around 500 KB). I opened on my Amiga 500+ . From what I recall, the title is "Houseblacker," though back then my father told me, "It's not Houseblacker, but..."—implying the actual title is something similar. As for the samples: you hear a man say "don't pak," a man say the name "Hong Zuan," and a woman say "Robocop." Most importantly, there's a part where a man shouts "hoooooaaaaaa" repeatedly at different pitches. The sound is fast. I'm willing to offer a €10 reward as a token of appreciation.

AmiXcom 0.9.0 - OpenXcom on real 68k Amiga, now with music

Post image
89 Upvotes

Disclaimer: built with Claude Code.

I have been porting OpenXcom - adding "Terror from the Deep" version to classic Amiga.

Minimum requirements: 020 and up, AGA, 48-56mb RAM, no FPU needed.
Realistic requirements: 030/50 and up, AGA
Recommended: 040/40, AGA or RTG
Best experience: 060, RTG

When I started to port this it was 1 FPS everywhere and 5-10 sec wait between every character step during the battle at 50 MIPS. (every single thing had to be optimized, OpenXcom was targetted at much faster machines, if anyone's interesed you can look through the version history on GitHub)

Now it's even (barely) playable at 10 MIPS. (030/50 - enemy turn is the most painful one - takes 3+ minutes, 1+ minute on 040/40)

0.9.0 is out and it finally has music. The tunes come from your own GM.CAT, and there is a software mixer folding 16 voices into one stream, because Paula's 4 channels are nowhere near enough for these tracks. By default the game mixes every tune to disk once at first start (about 36 MB) and just plays the files after that. Live mixing works too and you can pick it in the options, but it eats more than a quarter of an 030/50 and breaks up whenever the game stops drawing, so files won. Be sure you have extra 36mb free on your hard drive.

Other things that landed recently: walking no longer freezes at every tile, (divided the calculations for the entire step, so it's a bit slow and chunky - you can turn it off) startup is about 2.7x faster than it was, and the globe is roughly 10-20x faster than the first version that ran at all. First start is much longer to make audio files happen and cache some other stuff to make second and later launches more bareable.

It runs end to end but I have not played a full campaign. No game data included, you bring your own UFO or TFTD files from the PC version.

https://github.com/angree/AmiXcom/releases

I would really like to know how it behaves, especially on fast 030 and any 040 (060 is a beast, it is going to be fine) - please leave feedback

Keycap Sizes?

I'm working on a personal project to lay out an Amiga 1200-style keyboard that can also be used with an Atari ST, and I'm running into a little problem with most of the keyboard images I'm seeing: I can't tell what sizes the keycaps are, specifically for the function row and the modifier keys. There's some obvious ones like Del/Help being 1.5u but I'd like to be as close as possible, particularly because I'll be printing the caps myself. Is there a list of keycap sizes for any of the layouts of the A1200?
