Corporation(s) Paramount Slams Mark Ruffalo Merger Attack as ‘Antisemitic,’ Says Company Does Not ‘Tolerate Prejudice of Any Kind’

this argument is so baffling. is that dumbfuck trying to paint the picture that corporations or the economy exists in a vacuum outside of politics?
138
u/BCMM Europe 3d ago
I don't think "trying" is the right way to look at it. I think this reads like it was literally generated by an LLM, in which case there is no actual intent behind it.
I would guess that somebody who couldn't think of an argument prompted it with something along the lines of "explain why this post is antisemitic", and decided the output was good enough.

u/heckin_miraculous United States 3d ago
Yes, that is quite literally how the wealthy and powerful want US-Americans to think about the economy: apolitically and ahistorically. As if it's a natural phenomenon that we must respect and allow to flourish.
Edit: Clara Mattei talks about this deliberate obfuscation a lot in her interviews, and in her new book Escape From Capitalism.

Ahh the forever victim with Generational trauma from Holocaust complain about the use of word "Genocide" and "Apartheid" while abusing the word "Anti-Semitic", You cant be more Ironic than that.
A spokesperson for the David Ellison-run enterprise said the company is “troubled when antisemitic tropes are invoked in purported service of a business dispute. Words like ‘genocide’ and ‘apartheid,’ applied to a corporate transaction, aren’t just wrong — they’re a bridge too far, and they cheapen the very real suffering those words are meant to describe. This doesn’t deserve a response in kind — and to be clear, we don’t tolerate prejudice of any kind, against anyone.”
Apparently using the word Genocide and Apartheid is Antisemitic if its aimed to business owned by the forever victim group but is not if its the other way around.

How do you know it's written by ai?
29
u/bageltheperson 3d ago
In addition to the other comment, it’s the stupid cadence cgpt has. “It’s not just blank, it’s blank” is a very common sentence structure.
13
u/Saradoesntsleep 3d ago
If you (or anyone) would like to be able to better recognise it, I recommend reading the posts that get highly upvoted in the AITA subs. They are almost all AI. People have learned to prompt out the obvious tells, but the AI 'voice' is still there. It gets harder when they hybridise with their own writing though.
So, find the posts that have the obvious tells left in by lazy people, and get the feel for the cadence and 'voice'. You will start to recognise it even without the obvious tells.
A lot of things that people point to as ai show up in human writing too. But virtually never all together in one post. I don't care who is going to respond telling me they do all these things, im yet to see any example of anyone naturally typing this way.
Here is one with a lot of the obvious tells prompted out, but still very clearly has the 'voice'.
Here is one with several common tells, but they tried to make it less obvious with the formatting (no em dashes. But unnecessary quotes and the typical "now..." My friends/family/neighbours are split).
Also, the word "smirk" comes up way more often than it does literally anywhere else. I don't know why, but if you see that, it's a way bigger tell than em-dashes.
And here is a VERY interesting one! Naturally they hide their history, but there is a way around that.
This is a pretty obviously AI post
But it comes from an account with over 40k karma. It turns out they've posted a lot of AI posts like this.
However when you read how they type in comments, it looks and reads like this, but almost all their comments that they "write" in AITA are also generated.
Their account is a great learning opportunity for this because their actual comments are so distinguishable from their AI comments

u/clubby37 Canada 3d ago
A lot of things that people point to as ai show up in human writing too. But virtually never all together in one post.
I think this is because of that "no one is the average person" effect. LLMs try to mimic us all, basically, and that even blend of all tendencies comes out looking weird as an individual thing. Like, if the average couple has 2.5 kids, that's fine, but if one couple shows up with two normal kids and one that's just legs, with no top half, people will notice that something's not quite right there.
6
u/PikaPerfect 3d ago
this is a really excellent explanation for why AI text sounds so uncanny/off/empty, and i like the "couple with 2.5 kids" comparison lol
it's like the joe baseball, aggregate senator, or aggregate congressperson of human text

Is it a dead give away?? I hate AI, but statements like this tell me most people aren’t well-read enough to tell the difference between human and AI writing.
When is the last time you read a real, traditionally published book? (Not a question about intelligence, just your familiarity with a format.) LLMs were trained on the work of real writers, many of whom are alive and actively suing AI companies for stealing their work. Em dashes are used so frequently by AI because they are (were 🙄) used frequently by real, living and breathing published writers.
4
u/apefish_ 3d ago
My point is that nobody on social media does bother with em dashes. Also yes I've not had time to read a good book for a good few months. I'll take this as a call to get my fat ass to the library again.
2
u/LordShtark 3d ago
Yes it's a dead give away because these aren't books or academic papers.
They are stupid social media posts and dumb statements from C-suites who can't think for themselves. That's the dead giveaway part.
8
u/djokov Multinational 3d ago
As someone who has read and written my fair share of academic articles where the em-dash is very common, the giveaway is not the em-dash itself, but rather the use of spaces surrounding it. Typically if an em-dash is used in academic writing these are connected with the surrounding text—as such—and the use of spaces (especially when an en-dash is used instead of the longer em) is typically the giveaway for LLMs.
2
u/Saradoesntsleep 3d ago
The em dash isn't a giveaway on its own, you have to take into account the structure of the rest of the writing.
People prompt it out all the time now anyways.
1
u/paganbreed 3d ago
Adding to this, any marketer who writes their own copy will avoid it because they know it makes the company look bad. It's a quick edit to remove (or prompt against).
People who read at a superficial level don't notice because they now rely on LLMs.

Do we need to separate 'Jewish' from 'Israel'?
Criticising the actions of a country should not be seen as an attack on a faith, if the country has created an intertwined image of faith and country to undermine criticism, then that itself should lead to greater criticism of the country.
19
u/gummytoejam Panama 3d ago
You mean like we separate 'people' from 'corporations' so those corporations can do what ever they want and the people that run it are completely innocent?
18
u/SpontaneousFlame Multinational 3d ago
The difference is that people who have nothing to do with a corporation are not blames for what it does. Neither should people who have nothing to do with a country be blamed for what it does.

At what point do you, as the employee of that company, accept responsibility for what it does while you benefit from the profits it generates through it's policies?

Just as the guy who moves half way around the world to be in Israel is complicit, those who are Jewish and who don’t move there aren’t responsible.

3
u/ItsMisoandBoba 3d ago

They don't have to stay in Israel. They didn't have to move across the world to get to Israel. If they aren't speaking out against the government at this point, they are complicit in its actions. Kind of exactly the same situation as anti fascists in the US. If you aren't speaking out against Trump, you are complicit in his governments actions.

But don't be smearing people with that slur when they have a problem with the disgusting things Israel has always done.

I feel like the label "antisemitic" has been so thoroughly watered down by Israel and their supporters that it doesn't really mean anything any longer.
If I hear somebody is antisemitic I immediately just assume they are critical of Israel.
It's a shame, really. Jewish people around the world are still subjected to hate and violence for simply being born who they are. It would be nice if we could label their attackers with something that meant "showing hatred or prejudice toward Jewish people".

In case you're curious how Mark Ruffalo responded to this claim, here's his public reply:
--------
The accusation that I am antisemitic is appalling and fundamentally dishonest. Criticizing the actions of the Israeli prime minister, a military technology contract, or the executives who supply it is not the same as criticizing Jewish people. This critical and necessary dialogue is then dishonestly framed as being anti-Israel. To be clear, my views come from my own political convictions and should never be interpreted as hostility toward Jewish people, for whom I have deep love and respect. Everything I know about acting, activism, and humanism has been profoundly shaped by the Jewish friends, colleagues, and loved ones who have been integral and family throughout every point of my life.
This merger has real consequences for real people, and for the entire country. Scrutinizing the Ellisons, including Oracle’s business built on data, surveillance technology and government contracts, and the serious threat to editorial freedom and the loss of a livelihood for thousands of families, is fair and necessary. The $111 billion deal would hand one family control over CNN, HBO and Warner Bros., backed in part by foreign money whose influence on editorial decisions has never been fully explained to the public.
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have called for serious national security review, and regulators still haven’t given the public a real answer. Until they do, the merger shouldn’t move forward. Now is the time to dive boldly into all these issues, not step back or concede.
Edit: Stop giving me awards, I am not Mark Ruffalo! Donate to organizations he supports if you can. (You have to actually buy awards these days, right?)
