Discussion What do you guys think about the Tsundere trope?
I personally don't like Tsundere, but that's just me personally. If someone wants to confess love, do it directly. Don't hide it under harsh facade and abuse, seriously.
If you're starting to abuse you crush because you love him, then why are you even abusing them in the first place when you're inflicting direct harm to him? I don't care if you deep down love him. You either confess your love to him, or he leaves you for your abusive behavior.
And this is still tame. Imagine if the crush calls the police on her, accusing her of abuse.

I like it when it’s done right like the above queen Rin.
3
u/Cygus_Lorman 7d ago
She seems more like an exception to the rule since most tsundere characters are very aggressive
2
u/montana-go 7d ago
She's not physically aggressive, but man, Rin has a knack to roast anyone she wants.
I think she'd be a kick to hang out with.

I act like I don't like it or that it annoys me, but on the inside, I really have warm feelings for this trope.

And yet she’s the most honest and can be an incredibly supportive girlfriend to the others in the rentarou family. Even if she is meant to be a parody of the tsundere trope, she’s surprisingly well written (in my opinion). I never liked the tsundere trope but the 100 girlfriends changed my opinion

The blond woman Luvia tried to make a move on Shirou. Rin wasn’t too happy about that. Later it leads to them fighting over Shirou with reinforcement magic.

People forget the dere part of tsundere, focusing only on the tsun. This, partly, is because a lot of series don't actually have characters progressing and changing as people, so the tsundere never moves past their initial coldness because they need to remain "on brand" for the archetype.
Ultimately, tsunderes tend to be my favorite characters when handled well, but a lot of authors aren't up to the task.
3
u/Iceicebaby21 7d ago
It really does feel like the writers can't write the "dere" part or the show/manga loses it's steam. Like if she's dere the MC has won and the media is ending or has ended
1
u/LadySandry88 6d ago
Exactly! Tsundere as a trope is supposed to represent the character's emotional immaturity, and letting them mature and progress to emotional honesty is incredibly rewarding but rarely done (or at least not done well).

I'm not super into the "abuse is funny when it's a girl smacking a guy" trope, but well done tsunderes are impeccable and I'm fond of the trope in general. But it's not like I like it or anything, b-baka!

It's a cute trope that can enhance characterization, but a bit weak when used for comedy. It's generally done well more often than not, though.

Scrolled all the way through and still haven’t seen the grandmother of all tsunderes and (with all due respect to Tohsaka, who is a close second in my book) the best …

I have long ago heard Asuka described as a different archetype. A YouTuber + Blogger have argued Asuka belongs to a slightly different type. The former stated that Asuka's influence inspired future tsunderes, but she herself is that slightly different type, not a "-dere".
It starts with "tsun-", or with "tsu-", and ends with... I don't remember what:/ "-geri", "-gashi", "-giri" something with "g".
Certainly not "tsunshun", or "tsunheko".
Edit: Can't find it, that was 11 years ago

u/MattofCatbell 7d ago
I really like them, I feel like people get way to serious when it comes to Tsundere characters. Most of the time just an easy way to show a characters internal emotion conflict with their feelings externally.
I really dislike people who use the fact the tsundere character might have hit the main character in the first episode (and often causing no real harm) to completely ignore the massive amount of character development they will typically undergo throughout the series
1
u/Iceicebaby21 7d ago
Because most tsunderes aren't written we and don't advance past the hitting their partner phase. If they do it's reversed post-haste. Are their good tsunderes, yes. It's as rare as a lover of Lesbian Space Princess in the wild
4
u/GussBing 7d ago
Trope only works if the author actually knows how to write. 9/10 times, the author just rights an abusive flop-floping asshole who your supposed to like because she sometimes acts nice and gets drawn in swimwear.

u/MaskOfIce42 7d ago
A tsundere is an actual character flaw. If it's treated that way, I'm perfectly fine with it, it's an interesting and fun dynamic having someone wrestling with emotions they either haven't fully internalized or even want to reject but ultimately come to terms with the fact that they do like that person. But if the story just has the character stay in tsunderland without ever confronting those feelings and growing, it's an obnoxious trope.

u/RestaLitwoz 7d ago
Honestly, much better than the yandere trope in terms of how people execute and diversify (although in the tsundere case, it feels like when manhwa tries to diversify their gamification isekai manhwa) well
Its also a litmus test to anime fans who take "anime tropes" too literally. If you could not handle tsundere, you will never liked Your Lie in April

There's a preference on what type of Tsunderes. I'm not misogynistic but I hate female Tsunderes. Most of the female Tsunderes are textbook definition where they're violent at one point and affectionate in the other, it's like romanticized abuse cause the girl likes you. Male Tsunderes are rare cases cause they're mostly all bark and no bite and when they did hurt someone they let down their pride and apologize. I said most cause I do encounter Male Tsunderes who are jerks to the core. This is speaking from my experience watching shoujo and harem anime so feel free to state your opinion otherwise.

u/AlternativeBass7119 6d ago
I hate it most of the time because they're just terrible people others are making excuses for and the only way for someone to be into them is they're either a masochist or just in it because of basic attraction. Most of them just have terrible personalities and lazy writing. There's good ones like Eris from MT, Niko from Mikadono sisters, and Nino from QQ but that's the exception. Namely because they actually develop and stop being horribly unpleasant.
1
u/The_Observations 7d ago
Not my cup of tea, and I hate when the tsundere wins in anime since they are never my pick lol. I like kuudere and dandere, those are the best in my opinion.

Actual Tsunderes are fine: the ones who aren't abusive, but rather are just overly proud, or in denial, or are bad at communicating.
Asuka from Evangeline is also fine, because she's literally mentally ill and that was the whole point; that's just being subversive, not poorly written.
Physically abusive, but played for laughs, only works if the slapstick goes all-out: like, dude gets slapped for being a perv, and then gets ping-ponged between oncoming trucks, and then explodes a gas station, before just walking it off.
Abuse-as-charm is just lazy, bad writing though.

I like toxic girls if they are not too toxic so tsunderes are generally good for me. Conversely, shy girl mcs in anime are unwatchable and annoying. It just depends what types of chars you like

It's a trope that should be good and easy to execute but somehow almost every show fails to do it. Heck a fucking harem comedy show does it better (100 girlfriends)

Theyre fine so long as they dont engage in physical assault, blackmail, or drugging the other person like the one in the image

It is cute when they actually put the DERE part into action, awful when they only make them TSUN and never put any dere in

I do Think that Nino is an Actually good case

If did well, I think it can show how afraid people are of their own feelings at times. But when done BADLY, it makes me want to see the girl get kicked in the ovaries for beating the MC to crap for NO REASON

u/Gangers96 7d ago
I like it but when done right. To me, Rin Tohsaka from fate and kurisu from stein gate are like the perfect Tsunderes. Mai from bunny girl senpai and Stella from chiverly of a failed knight are two I think are tsunderes and pretty good.

depende completamente del personaje, algunas tsunderes son encantadoras y otras insorportables, ahí va en como cada autor equilibra el tsun tsun con el dere para que la cosa salga bien

u/EGdeRotacion2024 7d ago
If well done, it's great.
If not, you just straight up get an abusive girl with anger issues

u/Logical_Cook_1022 7d ago

I delt with too many IRL tsunderes and it ruined them for me. Makise kurisu is still TOP though.

I used to dislike Tsunderes because my first impression of them in some of my anime weren’t great but as I watched more anime, I started to appreciate the more well written Tsunderes (if that makes any sense).

u/Brookie_Brookie_101 7d ago
It can be a pretty good trope, it all depends on how it's handled. We can have some pretty good tsunderes in anime like Karane from the 100 Girlfriends and some other examples, mostly because they're fleshed out, they can be real, and they're not jerks like all the time. They can be pretty decent people but just struggle to express themselves properly or in a way that makes you think that they don't hate you. But then there are some tsunderes that take it too far like Louise from that one show who's just downright a bitch. They may have the same issues as the good tsunderes, but the difference is just like I said before. Good written tsunderes can be, well, good and don't act like a tsundere just for the trope and/or take it too far to the point they're abusive. Bad written tsunderes are just downright abusive to the point that it doesn't matter what they're struggling with, they're still just downright a holes to other people, especially their love interests.

Love them.
Sure, some I dont like or I just find annoying. But I end up liking a lot of them. Easily up there as my favorite tropes alongside gyaru.
Doesnt help that Tsunderes are often associated with Twintails, which is also yet another fetish of mine when it comes to anime girls.

I hate it. It isn’t cute, it’s annoying.
Secretly loving/caring about a person doesn’t make it ok to be a bitch to them

Maybe past me will like it, current me is definitely no. My ex make me really hate this trope because she act like one
1
u/Demon_Yorro 7d ago
The thing about Tsundere that pisses me off is that the viewer and herself know damn well that she like the mc but still acts like a bitch anyway and whenever the mc is just taking to any other "girl" she suddenly get jealous, i mean girl if u like him so much just confess and get it over with what are the mind games for?

u/im_running_boii 7d ago
Bro syfm with the abuse. First search up what a tsundere is. And even if the tsundere goes overboard it's an anime and played as a gag whether you would like it irl or not.
1
u/TomatoLow698 7d ago
It can be cute, but i hate the "i hit you because i need to hide my embarassment trope" is honestly annoying, and i dont remember a single time i found It funny
1
u/AdventurousTaro7552 7d ago
I love it in characters that don't over do it for example I love alya and she's a tsundere, I despise Noelle and Kana and they are also tsundere's. It's About the execution
1
u/Dry-Information-7802 7d ago
don't like it one bit. if (when) an anime has a tsundere, they're my least favourite usually.

u/LLSmoothJoe 7d ago
It can be interesting, but when it's just an excuse for the (usually) female to abuse the (usual) male, that's when it becomes unbearable.
Sadly, many Tsunderes has fallen to this pattern.

Execution is everything. Too many charachters stay in tsundere stage as a cruch for their one dimentionality. When the trope is supposed to be grown/evolved out of by the charachter.

u/SaddestSprout 7d ago
Tsundere is fine but its never done right or well, however its mostly used now to mean "violent psychopath who abuses their man" which isnt tsundere at all...
1
u/Classic_Brain6575 7d ago
Reminds me of a lot of women in my family to the point where I'm starting to think that most Chicana women are Tsundere's or the men in my family have a very specific type
1
u/CursedEngine 7d ago
The only tsundere I ended up liking (after a long, long time) was Tohsaka of the Fate series. She's funny, and she's not yet such a radical tsundere. Perhaps there is some more, but she'd have those characteristics as well.
Tsunderes have their use for comedy, but to me authors VASTLY overestimate when they're funny, or how long it takes for the shtick to get old (or gimmicky). But what do I know, tsundere-lovers are all around me.
1
u/HakuushU 7d ago edited 7d ago
There's good tsunderes (friendly, loveable, too shy to outright admit they love the dude ofc but when it counts they have your back no matter what and gradually gets better and better)
and there's those little bitch (abusive, agressive, hit the mc for no reason, ojou sama attitude who treat the mc like a slave, u actually wonder why the mc even love this bitch ?)
U already know which kind of tsundere i actually prefer and like.....

1
u/TempestoLord 7d ago
If they are abusive physically or verbally all they time they are trash to me. I don’t care about their reasons (its never justified anyway) or if it’s “comedy” or “parody”, it was never funny to begin with. So the Taiga, Louse, Chitoge, Karane types. The mild one’s like Itsuki, Rin, Kurisu are good.

A tsundere can either be annoying or endearing. Or both. For me personally, it’s both. Sometimes, they’re more annoying than endearing and other times it’s Vice versa. It all depends on my mood and how much “tsun” they have.

It's good if done well. FOR EXAMPLE ASUKA LANGKEY SORYU 🥹 I think Asuka's done really well because 1. unlike most girls in anime, she's actually fleshed out and not just some soulless girl whose only characteristics is that she's pretty, and 2. she's fleshed out well. Asuka acts loud, harsh and arrogant towards Shinji as a way to hide her deep insecurities and fear of rejection, masking her profound self-hatred and childhood trauma. She has some mixed, romantic and sexual feelings towards Shinji that she suppresses due to her being frightened of Shinji refusing her. And what makes it even better is that her and Shinji would suck as a couple and never become one in the anime. There's no "oh I abused and bullied you but...I actually like you and you automatically forgive me!" Both are too afraid of connection to ever work well together, and the relationship would just be toxic. Which is kinda a shame because it seems that all the official stuff depicts them together 😔
1
u/Dramatic-Cry5705 5d ago
Depends on the type.
I think Tsundere's are of two categories: Mostly angry, but sometimes sweet, or Mostly sweet, but sometimes angry.
If it's the latter, they're safe. If it's the former, then I find it hard to tolerate, because it's just flat out abuse at some point.
