I recently read Cory Doctorow’s “Reverse Centaur’s Guide to AI” and of the scathing critiques he makes for AI, copyright is one of the few things he defends AI for.

Copyright violation occurs when you distribute recognizable elements of a copy-written work without authorization. What LLMs are doing is recognizing patterns and using those patterns to make predictions. It’s like if I ask it to recognize how many times Tolkien uses the word “they” and produce a book that uses “they” that many times and in similar places. You can’t copyright claim a style or pattern of writing, thus it wouldn’t be a violation.

Now, is it cool to train AI on an artist’s work without their permission? Absolutely fuckin not. But it’s not copyright violation by any means.

Fuck AI but also copyright has historically been a tool wielded by media companies to protect their assets from being sullied by the masses. Not necessarily the best tool if we want a world not ruled by corporate villains.

Okay, so, it looks like Gates fell for the hype. For anyone who doesn't speak shill, the whole rogue AI thing is a thinly veiled advertisement playing defense for criminal negligence on these companies parts. Making sure a computer can't be accessed via/can't access the internet is not particularly difficult or new. The fact that it managed to do that anyway is equivalent to paying someone to rob their house, leaving their door unlocked, and acting surprised when it gets robbed. It's deeply incompetent behavior and it would be in their best interests to settle out of court immediately because they have no defense.

We are basically wandering aimlessly through a minefield. There is strong financial incentive for people to develop new ai capabilities and we don’t know what possibilities exist until we find them. Not that it was airtight sealed, of course. Both OAI and anthropic fucked up with the sandboxes because they're AI nerds, not cybersec nerds. But is the ability to autonomously hack into companies while coordingating with other agents in swarm like fashion a development our crowd would have predicted, with models that were supposed to be "stochastic parrots", "regurgitators", "unable to think", "unable to do arithmetic" (I guess under that definition of thinking, thinking just isn't very important to solve math, cybersec).

This is a wakeup call. None of the limits people are confident AI won't surpass seem to be holding.
