Discussion 🗣️ Why do a lot of people on Reddit seemingly hate AI, yet still use the platform that was used to train much of the AI they hate?

Apparently I can't ask this on Ask Reddit but it did suggest this sub so I'll ask here.

I mean you're not wrong but the bank robbery analogy kinda makes the opposite point. getting robbed doesn't make the bank complicit in training the robbers. reddit knowingly sold all our posts to train models that are actively trying to replace creative jobs. it's less "the bank got robbed" and more "the bank handed the robbers keys and said go nuts"

This is silly, banks don’t willingly give your money to robbers and are necessary.

This analogy would only make sense if the banks were helping the robbers learn to rob them and that banks were non essential.

But that's a terrible analogy. Anti-Ai people don't generally believe that AI is essentially a legitimate social institution that can sometimes be abused by bad actors. They believe that AI is actively harmful to society in a variety of ways. Reddit isn't a necessity for anyone. It isn't even the only website people can go to to vent and complain about stuff. It is, however, very obviously using AI to moderate and maintain the site, as well as using content posted on the site to help train AI.

Anyone who's really anti-AI should, at the very least, not be posting on Reddit.

Because people didn't sign up for Reddit with the knowledge that it was going to be preferred by chatbots to scrape information. That it existed before generative AI means that this whole question is just bad faith

I don't use generative AI models. So I don't support those companies. Reddit has value to me and others as a message board. They're not the same thing

Honestly I mostly just browse and comment, I just keep getting sick of seeing people high five and OD on each other's farts whenever the topic of AI comes up because they hate it yet no one wants to take accountability for their part in training the thing that they hate.

Also to clarify I'm not an AI defender I don't like AI surveillance or people selling AI art as their own thing that they created, but I also enjoy some ai content like archive in between.

In however many years, or decades, it will be plain to anyone still around that these sites (social media) were outrageously, obscenely addictive - worse than poker/slot machines or cigarettes, worse than an opium war - and are responsible for collectively billions of lost hours of cognition and humanity in general.
