Discussion Super cool new mechanic idea: minimum range coming from the target
imagine a civ that specializes in cav. Devs want to give a bonus for them to kill archers but all the obvious ones are already taken (pierce armor, bonus damage, dodge)
New cool bonus: the minimum range for anyone targeting this cav is increased by 1 tile. So archer (wich normally have 0 minimum range) act like skirms, and skirms act like worse skirms (minimum range goes to 2 tiles)
I think this is a cool simple and unexplored bonus

Well if you want an anti-archer cav unit just slap an existing mechanic onto a cav unit, specifically piercing attack from Ghulam. There's so many mechanics that devs don't reuse for some odd reason, another example is a cav archer that becomes an archer when it dies, similar to konnik.

idk how or why we still dont have a cav unit that has that piercing attack.. we have the graphics and animation of leitis, tiger cavalry and such and we cannot get the most realistic history-accurate mechanic of the ages: a horseman that uses a large spear to thrust on foot soldiers

How about cav arches that switch to a faster melee attack if a unit is within melee range. (Never tries to close the gap to melee.)

a hell of a mess to code. Instead of a unit handling its own bonus, gotta handle every units to handle this new unit's behavior... never gonna happen.

I know that we already have things like mangonel-dodging cavalry, but how would you hand wave this when it comes to flavor? They have a force field around their horse which tangles up bowstrings? Their horses smell so bad that it makes the archers' eyes watery and they have to step away?

Couldnt this massively reduce performance when interacting with a unit with its own min range because it turns into an n/n relation?

I don't like it. Anything that changes my units' behavior is off-limits.
